These quals appear to be relatively basic...

...it seems hard to believe that Apple doesn't already have senior staff on hand with this level of experience to step into this role.

Let's hope it's the secret FIX APPLE MAPS project.

New before I even opened the comments page this was going to be among the first comments.

----------

Fix the ****** backend before hiring people for the frontend.

Given the number of hires/acquisitions/work referenced in re maps, clearly they are working on the backend. I have faith Apple can handle more than one task at a time.

A thousand times this!

----------

The problem with this approach is there is little (no) reason to use Apple Maps if given a choice. The only reason I use it is because it's the default app.

----------

Maybe Apple should start by questioning why Helicopter view exists.

I use it because it's twice as LOUD as google maps. It's also a better design, with clearer controls and functionality. But just check your destination on google before you go...

Isn't it all a bit late? Apple Maps went from laughing stock to laughing stock.
It did change for a while in some places, but in some cities things just never changed. Where I live things, if anything, got worse. Pubs are in the middle of roads, shopping centres have no shops or cinemas. Laser eye surgery places become cinemas. A lot of businesses are randomly thrown over the map, nowhere near where they actually are. Towns and cities don't exist, it is still a mess, and to be honest that is not going to change any time soon, if ever.
It is quite often good enough to get you to the right area, but rarely where you actually intend to go. Apple have tried to fight too many battles at too many fronts. Maybe it is time to admit it was a big mistake, whilst munching tasty humble pie.

Apple Maps was a complete success! Google refused to make a decent map for Apple, preferring to keep turn by turn directions to themselves for android products. So Apple made their own app. Then google made one for Apple just to show Apple how it's done. So, now we have two choices instead of none. Seems like a pretty big success to me.

And, actually, there is mapquest which is often better than either. But nobody seems to care for some reason. I've been using it for 3 years. It's free with turn by turn that reads street names and everything. Better POI support too.

The real irony here is people DO that. At least my gf does. She ain't crazy enough to trust Apple Maps for something important.

Apple Maps works like a dream... for me. I use it 10 hours... every day.

It's been wrong twice and one of those times may have been MY input.

As far as I'm concerned... the Apple Maps "blow back" wasn't legit.

Maybe they should hire people to check all their locations.. My house is still 10 miles away in the middle of a golf course apparently. I even submitted an error/update locaiton report on it.. Nothing in over a year! My house has been here for almost 3 years now!! Stupid Tom Tom!! God I wish they didn't use them.

New Apple iAirMaps! We'll drive you right up to your airplane! Includes airport runway driving navigation. We'll take you directly From the street to your airplane, and navigate you in the skies!*

* While in the spirit of Steve Jobs we only make the highest quality products, we recommend an aircraft capable of a water landing just in case.

That's what I was thinking. Just what kind of qualification did the people who made the original iOS 6 Maps have?

And here are the flood of apple maps sucks comments.....

Perhaps that's because Maps well and truly sucks.

Apple Maps would be a lot better if they actually fixed up some of the issues that users actually submit. I submitted many "fixes" when it first came out (updating place names / locations), and NONE have been updated....

Same here. Doubly infuriating, especially from a company that is known for its attention to detail and reliability. Apple has money to spend. There are many able-minded and indeed able-bodied people out of work. Yet, Maps continues to suck.

Finally!

Step 2 .. Acquire a working partnership with Garmin

.. The rest will fall into place..

So, just because it all works in your neighborhood, everybody else is wrong. Talk about having the blinders on...

for iWatch

Point to point navigation interface for iWatch and new sport-related features.

I can't wait for the gradients and super thin fonts in Maps too! :)

It's already brutally difficult to see. Thin light grey lines on a white background... yikes.

I do like the Maps app though, when it works, for some things. I certainly like the idea of vector mapping.
