Since none of my manly ego is tied up in the looks of my car I would much prefer manufacturers to continue spending more money on safety features durability and lowering the cost of ownership instead of spending more money on good-looking exteriors.
You've got it backwards. Good-looking exteriors is what they spend their money on.

It all plays together, interior and exterior. We can't know if we're in the trough until somebody does something new. The Apple-company-type is replicable but nobody's done it yet. They are experts at understanding the average user need. Think of the day when two companies will compete on that level...

Thank you for saying that, sadly it ceased to be Swedish in 1999 when bought by Ford Motors and then by its' current Chinese owner. Although the headquarters (and some assembly & production) are still in Sweden.

Haha, flying cars, yeah, all those predictions and none were about self driving cars, how could we possible need that when we are all flying.
And I didn't know that about Volvo, oh well they can be like everyone else then, owned by someone bigger. They seems to be doing alright though. See plenty of their cars around.
Apple is a luxury brand though, yes their devices are nice, just not convinced they can do the same for cars. And at what price? I cannot see them making a whole car, electronics yes but not an entire car.

Problem is whenever someone does a unique rear end everyone criticizes it until they replace it with a more conventional rear. The camaro is a great example. Above I pointed out the pretty unique rear it had at one point. Here's what it has now (and it gets worse every refresh!)

Though admittedly even the new one is still pretty decent.

Then again, the tail of an SRT8 charger looks pretty fantastic too.

Oh yeah, gotta give the mustang honorable mention:

To be fair, all of those are either fairly expensive or nonconventional cars. The 300 and charger are about as close to a mundane midsize as you get before things start to get depressing.

If you look at a dart, they softened and cheapened it up to Corolla standards. It's still better, but not by much

Even that is better though.

I think the problem is you're looking at boring cars XD

Sorry, I just don't get excited about car rear ends. They all look pretty much the same.

Damn straight. Those cars made us Westerners feel blessed to be Westerners.

Though you gotta give credit where credit's due. The Soviets did prove you could make everything Brutalist if you wanted to.
100% agree. I mean who else but a Soviet would come up with the idea to use whale penis leather to cover the interior of an armored SUV for oligarchs?o_O Too bad they were thwarted by the likes of Pam Anderson and Greenpeace. Pam Anderson is why we can't have nice things.

For those who think I'm just kidding: http://www.wired.com/2009/11/dartz/

The cars were made of concrete? 'Brutalist' originates from the French béton brut for "raw concrete" not from the word brutal. (McClelland, Michael, and Graeme Stewart, "Concrete Toronto: A Guide to Concrete Architecture from the Fifties to the Seventies," Coach House Books, 2007, p. 12.)

Not sure that amounts to a 'drop the mic' moment.

This laptop is not even close to being better that the rMBPs that Apple puts out.

It depends completely on what you're looking for.

Sorry don't see anything really special about the laptop. Trackpad is in a horribly placed. Three buttons, really. Just a busy looking design. That is one ugly looking car.

The trackpad is centered on the keyboard and it's nice to have mouse buttons some times

I think Ferrari, Lamborghini and a few others have pushed design into the stratosphere. Of course it's not practical for the masses, but Jony couldn't outdo an Aventador.

Pee Wee Herman could out do and Aventador.
