Somehow it seems to be a waste of something that could have been a great relaxing and viewing spot.

That area in Singapore is full of viewing opportunities, especially the hotel just behind it or the massive ferris wheel just next door, so I guess they didn't bother going that direction, especially with the current health regulation limiting the amount of people allowed in one place.

It's amazing that Apple is still investing millions in it's retail strategy, even though we are in a global pandemic!

That store was already a big ball in MBS area a year ago, here's a photo from the 2019 F1, you can see the black orb already there.

I have some pics from August 2019 and as far as I can tell it wasn't there yet (I don't live in SIN), so they must have put it there around that time.

Unfortunately it’s not free. In order to access the infinity pool, you need to at least have a stay in Marina Bay Sands.
Bummer.
So an Apple Café would have indeed been better. ;)

Is a stunning location, yet I think architecturally the space is not very well made use of.
Watching the video, this Apple store layout looks "temporary" and not really that well thought out.
Dunno. One would have to see it in person.
But the store as seen in the video did not impress me much, sadly.
Thanks @Livewings for sharing!

Is it small? I think it is smaller than most Apple Stores in Asia.

it seems pretty big and to have a large underground section

Sounds like a great tip. Thanks.
Is it free to visit? And is this an outdoor viewing deck?

AFAIK you can acces the observation deck if you pay for it, this does not include the infinity pool, that's for hotel guests only.

Sands Skypark Observation Deck

I've been to Singapore uncountable times, been at Marina bay lots of times, the new Apple store makes totally sense at that place, it's such a laidback area.
Don't miss the sound and light show if you visit, it's awesome, it's been a while since I've been there, I think it's twice at nighttime.

I looked up some old selfies from when I lived and worked in Singapore in 2014-16 and there was two similar platforms floating on the water with very triangular shapes. Looking at Google Maps it says one is unoccupied (presumably Apple store) and the other is LV. Check out 1.283314, 103.857566 coordinates on Google Maps and the satellite view still shows the triangular looking thing.

The design itself is beautiful!

Wait! Does it float in the water or it’s just standing there?
It doesn’t actually float as also extends below water. You can access either from outside or from inside the Marina Bay Sands Shoppes mall which brings you in Via a lower level.

I’m a bit confused how it’s inspired by the Pantheon. The Pantheon is mostly opaque, so the shaft of light from the hole in the roof is obviously dramatic. This building is all window, so how does that work?

Its pretty though isn’t it? Much nicer than in that older photo where it looked all grey.

Why? Most brick-and-mortar retail is open (with restrictions) where I live in the US. As others have said, some other countries, like those in Asia, are already faring far better than the US. In any case, when Apple has closed its stores, it's done so voluntarily for the most part.

In-person shopping is still a viable option when combined with reduced occupancy, face coverings, etc. and will only be more viable as the pandemic winds down. Thinking people are going to buy high-value electronics solely online is just not realistic, especially given how important the tactile experience is for a lot of Apple's products.

From this angle maybe?

Looks a lot better at night. If you’re looking for something architecturally look say or night, look at the marina bay sands hotel.

I love how they built a needlessly gorgeous, and undoubtedly hugely expensive building, then provide wooden boxes to sit on. :p

That is one awesome dome.

Shame Apple retail chooses the 'icky' unpleasantness of traditional-blocky types in other areas/countries where if you have the space, it can be done.

Not free but there is a way to get to top "free"
Go to the roof top bar counter of Ce La Vi on ground floor of Marina Bay near i think southern end elevator. And by a dinks voucher - I think they are $30 singapore dollars, then you are able to go to the roof top order drinks/snacks to use the voucher and see the view for free. We did it :) but bear in mind drinks are $$$

And alternate if you like across the Marina waterway (not ocean side) is a beer garden set into a building called LeVel33

Hope this helps - we learned these trciks doing a FatTyre Bike tour which is another awesome thing to do there.

Finally to bring back to article there is also another "floating" store near the Apple one - LOUIS VUITTON Singapore Island
Enjoy and be safe

These kind of projects are designed and prepared years before they start and eventually finish.
Obviously, with being in September 2020, there was not such a thing as Covid19 when they started this, and not even when they start building it.
Apart from that, if everybody would stop investing in projects, life would come to a complete standstill, making things even worse.

Also: not all countries are handling the pandemic poorly. Singapore hasn’t had a COVID death in months and community transmission is next to zero.
