I'm happy for soccer fans who don't have T-Mobile. But I won't be signing up. A pity an NFL deal couldn't be worked out with Apple. And I get MLB.tv for free from T-Mobile.

Please sign up on Tuesday with T-Mobile for free, if nothing else to help the numbers.

To be fair, the schedule for the CONCACAF champion's league lines up poorly with the MLS schedule, which runs spring to fall instead of fall to spring. Knockout stages of CCL are played during MLS preseason and early season, which makes it harder for MLS teams to compete with mid-season to late-season form Mexican clubs.

Maybe so, I thinks the whole concept of pausing the sport for so long is detrimental, in Europe they play year round, with very brief (2-3 weeks) pauses, the EPL is famous for playing on “boxing day”, the players essentially spend Christmas preparing next day’s game and not away.

Worth mentioning, T-Mobile will be giving away free MLS Season Pass next week to their customers. So if you have T-Mobile, and are considering grabbing Season Pass, you might as well wait until Tuesday and get it for free.

"most fans"? Just to those that don't have cable, satellite TV, or streaming TV to watch local games via their regional sports channel. I think most "fans" have one of those.

Bally is filing bankruptcy, leaving MLB, NBA and NHL in quite a lurch and they're scrambling to create a streaming platform that takes it all over - and with any luck eliminates blackouts. "Most fans" are going to be in trouble if they don't get it squared away in a few months.

I sure hope the end of local blackouts happens. I have no interest in paying for an expensive TV package just to have access to my RSN. Even if I have to pay extra over the standard MLB.TV sub to see my local team, it would be far cheaper than paying DirecTV for hundreds of TV channels I'll never watch.

Hmm. Here in Australia I can (and do) get the Premier League for less than that.

Sporting rights are worth different amounts in different markets. As well as the quality of the competition, things like match times matter a lot. Putting Apple’s interests aside, if MLS wants to reach global audiences they ought to want their broadcasts priced competitively. In this country, that is an awful lot of money relative to what we pay for other things. It’s a prime time price, but not a prime time product.

I wonder why a company with Apple's penchants would not also insist on having the NWSL?
MLS and NWSL are separate entities. Paramount/CBS has the broadcast rights for NWSL. You can watch all the games on Paramount+.

Save yourself some money and go to your local park to watch people kicking a ball around. The standard of football is the same…!

wont be paying for it, but will think the free games will be a good addition to appletv+ for football fans who wouldnt normally watch the MLS. Hopefully there will be a weekly roundup show on tv+

Lots of Scots playing

Danny Wilson and Sam Nicholson at Colorado Rapids
Johnny Russell at Kansas
Lewis Morgan at NY Red Bulls
Ryan Gauld at Vancouver

also players with Scottish connections like Klimala at NY Red Bulls

I don't see anything but positives here.
It's a mixed bag. The new deal gives MLS fans more coverage.

BUT it's more expensive than the previous ESPN+ coverage, and Apple essentially fired ALL the local broadcast teams in the league in favor of a national squad of broadcasters and pundits. Some broadcasters had been with teams for quite a few years and were part of the club culture. There is now no local coverage.

So you get 'more for more' on the national level, and no local TV alternatives. I'm not paying for it, but it will probably be deemed a big success because it will likely demonstrate that the 'product' has increased in 'value'.

Uh huh. 2001 called and wants it's snarky dig back.

This is what I dislike about Apple sport coverage. They don't care about continuity or culture.

The ATV+ UI also needs improvement and would have already been fixed if they understood sport fans: There is no means to hide the final score! I went looking for the Orlando City match from yesterday.

I covered the final score, just as Apple should.

They need to hire a sports director from a proved network, say ESPN+, and have a specialist in association (soccer) football and for every sport, as treatment, presentation, etc, varies a lot.

For example someone that knows that in football home team always goes first, etc. Unlike other sports.

Eddie Cue or whoever is in charge can’t be the one making the calls

ESPN always had the worst quality when it came to broadcasting soccer matches on TV or streaming. Yesterday's test run had the best streaming quality I've seen for a soccer match. They'll definitely take the feedback this season and make it even better.

Apple will spend tons of money on technology for the broadcast. MLB looks amazing. But, they fail brilliantly with talent hires.

I really don’t know about American ESPN, but in Latin America ESPN is top notch, best commentators, analyst, I’d say the best worldwide, so, we come back that at the end is about the people, in sports transmission.
