So maybe what people are saying is true and Apple is needing source information from iPhone users to better their mapping service, because I just searched for both Pearson Airport and Centre Island Airport and found both, although yes the Centre Island one (the less important one) was named Trans Capital Air1 Island Airport. But it did locate it and at least had Island Airport in the name?

I agree that I have been shocked with how bad it was when first released....but.....if this continues and after just one day this info has been updated....HOPEFULLY???........:)

Steve Jobs would have NEVER allowed the release of these maps in its current form.

That is a fact.

I sound like a broken record, as this is precisely what I've been saying since this was introduced in beta.

The new Maps is awful. Worse than beta.

So many features missing compared to the old Google-based Maps. Where's Street View? Traffic was simple and clean and easy to read at a glance. That's gone. And honestly, why would anyone care about the rendered 3D views? Useless as ever. Yet the apologists will continue to make excuses...

Absolutely NO problems here, despite the fact that the depth of the Apple Maps can't, of course, be compared yet with Google's seven-year lead. To expect otherwise is simply IDIOTIC.

To be honest, I expect the mapping software on a high end smartphone to at least be accurate, reliable and most of all *trustable* for the common use cases.

This isn't. Maybe it is in your area, but as you can see from other people, and the pictures they have posted here and elsewhere, it isn't accurate elsewhere, even in major cities like London and New York.

The version number of the software is irrelevant. You're using the phone NOW, not in two years time when the software is finally fixed and useful.

But it will definitely take a while. I'm just waiting for a Google maps app to come out to be honest, Apple is unlikely ever going to catch up.

fair enough...the map is crap :p
i just hope google comes up with an update. but i will wait for a strong improvement of apples map.

oh so it's just bringing up the wrong luton

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luton_(disambiguation)

In this case, it's pretty clear that the first result should be the large town (203,00 inhabitants) rather than one of the small villages in other parts of the country.

The other issues are more important: aside from the lack of detail in many places, why the lack of correct colours for roads? Motorways need to be blue, A roads green etc. Google gets it right, Apple does not. I won't be upgrading to iOS6 until there's a Google Maps App available...

All these posts remind of the "Antennagate" time. A lot of noise and then eventually it all fizzes out. People still buy the damn phones. I believe the same thing is going to happen, people will complain, some will find alternatives. Over some time these things will be fixed and we'll have a maps with a better interface and good data. Not sure how they will handle transit though.

While I do agree that the map data sucks for a lot of people complaining here (not in my case, DFW/TX/US). I really like the interface on this version more than the previous one. Especially how seamlessly the POIs have been integrated with Maps i.e. they're "touchable"/"tappable". You didn't have that in the earlier maps version (or maybe I just don't know how to do it, but I doubt that). Also, Maps now feels much snappier/faster.

If I have to choose between the interfaces, I'd choose the new Maps. However, it remains to be seen how much is that "some time" which they'll take to fix this.

Each successive version of iPhone falls further behind the top Android devices. (didn't even catch up to Galaxy S3 this time 'round).

Each successive version of iOS takes away perfectly working apps in favor of Apple ones that are inferior in a lame effort to force Apple minions into their ecosystem.

And yet, the Apple fan-dom lines up and plunks down a couple hundred bucks for whatever the overlords from Cupertino says is good for them.

"And you people, don't you have jobs to go to? Get out of here, go commute! You oughta be ashamed of yourselves. Bunch of easily-led automatons. Try thinking for yourselves..." Classic quote from Clerks

This is just an abject lie. Absolute nonsense. Google Maps has for more than 5 years been one of the best, up-to-date mapping solution available on the internet.

I’m the senior developer for a large franchise of fast-casual restaurants around the United States and a few international locations as well. In 2010 I started getting complaints from franchisees about their locations not being found by Google. Just in case you think I’m still propagating “abject lies” here’s just a couple of articles about the problem:

http://www.aolnews.com/2010/09/28/google-maps-loses-florida-town-again/
http://blumenthals.com/blog/2010/03/17/google-maps-what-happens-when-you-loose-a-town/

Are Apple maps in 2012 as good as Google’s in 2012? Not even close, they’re not even as good as Google Maps circa 2010, but they’ll get better, just like Google’s did.

Well. According to Bill Of Materials ($199) iPhone 5 is a mid range phone not a high end. Perhaps it's OK then for it to have a mediocre map app? ;)

Well, you do have a point - Apple could have easily renewed its contract with Google and kept Google Maps for a few more months at least, while launching its own effort in parallel for people to get acquainted with.

Wow, sounds like you just need to buy a GPS device.

You're saying to buy a $200+ device to replace the free app that worked perfectly in iOS5? Do you people think at all before you type?

Maps are the least important for me. Oh, and th new app works great for my area in the US, which is all that matters to me.

Yes, I imagine people that live in their parents basement do not have much use for maps. People that travel, go to various places as much as possible, get out and see the world, RELY on maps. I travel to Japan often for work and pleasure. I absolutely need maps to get around there. But I am glad it is working out for you, since that is all that seems to matter here.

Apple's map doesn't even work on my sisters iPhone. It works only partially on mine.

All I see are black box grids on my sisters phone for the same search results that work on mine. Rebooting the iPhone, and closing the app doesn't help. You can't uninstall or install the maps app either. We all used Google's Map app a lot for directions.

Lets admit it and deny it nae langer ...

Apple HAD to get something to boast about with the 'new' iPhone 5 .. and Maps and Flyover was it .. albeit half finished ... but didint it look good on the Keynote?

Their only mistake was to release it before the new model is released tomorrow - but of course there'll always be narrowminded and naive fan base that would buy a turd rolled in glitter if it had Apple written on it.

I was going to get a iPhone 5 for Siri, Maps and Panorama and added speed compared to my current iPhone 4.

Now Ive seen that Maps 'dont work'. That Panorama can be bought in other guises off the App Store for less than a quid .. and speeding up things .. is only going to make IOS 6 appear slightly snappier is a tall order to demand £600 of my hard earned cash.

Sadly - I do have a life. I do have other things to buy in these austere times and beleive it or not - the world does NOT revolve around a 'spruced up smartphone' and now I ve seen how underwhelming the new OS is. How a slightly longer and lighter isnt the ground breaking event we were all expecting - and Apple have dropped a bollock with this one in their rush to get rich.

Theres two markets that are thriving in these hard times. The budget store market and the luxury store market. Apple obviously belong to the latter.

But luxury items have to work properly and have a USP that trounce the competition. Looks like the iPhone 5 and IOS 6 fall below Steve Jobs' ideals.

Im a big Apple fan and own many of their products .. but this smacks of a downhill trend .. which has to be shaken NOW

CHeers! :D Thats it

Now you can go!

*big round of applause* :)

I find it disappointing to say the least. Will it get better, yes it will. My concern is Apple rushed this out the door before it was ready and removed what was clearly a working App just because of their disdain for Google. Its about business and your customers satisfaction. Customers who are having issues are not satisfied (those who are not having issues are).

Perhaps Google will actually release a maps app . . . or not.

i think exactly the same...:)

I want my google maps back!!

I live in Germany and prior the update I could search for just "Rewe" or "Penny" or whatever grocery store. Now thats not working and it says it doesnt know "Rewe" anymore! I want my google maps back!

Exactly my point. People ignore that Apple has taken a courageous and strategic stance to eliminate built-in reliance on Google's products, which of course causes some pain for human beings naturally averse to change.

AGAIN: in just a few minutes of testing, I have found Apple Maps to be highly accurate and responsive. Nevertheless, to expect it to be at the same level as a seven-year old crowd-sourced Maps app by Google is absolutely IDIOTIC...give it a few days and things will surely be EVEN better.

And what the hell is this reaction of NOT buying a phone just because of a new Maps app? Is that the only thing you do on an iPhone? Incredible.

Trolling or just talking nonsense?

Wow. Everyone is criticising an app they didn't use much before iOS 6...
The app is awful. I have used my map app all over Europe and the US. I know many people that do. Street View gives you a clue to what to look out for when you are driving on unknown roads and transit is very helpful for someone who hasn't used the London Tube for many years.
Apple should allow users to downgrade back to IOS 5, especially if you are using an iPhone 4. I was going to upgrade but I am not sure if I even want to stay with :apple:
