Rather Convenient Timing

Good thing the iPhone 5 sold out before this news got out. I wonder how many people will be wanting their money back. Transit directions are the key for me - how can they not have transit directions in the app? Fail. Fail. Fail. Fail. Fail. Fail. Fail. How many fails is that? A lot.

Maps sucked when it was google and it (subjectively) continues to suck now. It knew where I lived and it has brought up all the searches I have requested. I'm not sure what else I need it to do. However, since I'm on Iphone 4, I always use mapquest for turn by turn. That may change once my 5 gets here tomorrow.

Never had a problem with Google Maps but these new maps are dire.

Bogus on anyone that say's "I'm not buying the i5 because of a frickin' maps app, ya sure."

I returned the 4 due to issues I had. Since you can't have the iPhone5 without iOS6 its not bogus that someone who relies on Google Maps heavily will wait untilt here is atleast a stand-alone app available.

Um, my car has navigation along with a quadrillion other apps for god sake, get real, stop whining...

My car doesn't have nav and those other apps don't have all the features the old maps app did. There are a lot of people in cities who take transit and walk more than they drive.

Apple Maps has way less information, at least in my area, than Google Maps did. Come on Apple. I didn't think downgrades were your game?

I use my map app 3 times a day Monday through Friday. Once in the morning to check the flow of traffic. Once when I leave work to check the traffic...once I leave the gym to see how traffic is. Googles traffic info was awesome!! I could see traffic in any direction for 70 miles. Now this "wack maps" doesn't show the flow of traffic nearly as much. It's 15% at best of what I use to see.
At this point if google put in the map app in the App Store I'd pay 20.00 for it. The map traffic data is crucial for me.

I just don't understand the attraction to coming here if one hates Apple. This is an Apple-centric site. I frequent forums for Apple, the Boston Red Sox, and Jeeps. I've never once considered visiting Android, NY Yankees, or Hummer forums. What's the point?

Well, they are NOT when they troll.

Report them and the moderators will deal with it. The same applies to Apple trolls. ;)

So what happened to the "competition is good" meme now that Apple has it's own maps solution? :D

Again, just use maps.google.com as a web app. If Apple Maps sucks, there is a viable and free alternative.

That would almost work (not as good but still) if many other apps did not rely on maps API. hey will all suck from now on.

I can't even find a single post office in my city – which you would think would be a basic thing for a maps app to offer.

I was going to get a iPhone 5 for Siri, Maps and Panorama and added speed compared to my current iPhone 4.

Now Ive seen that Maps 'dont work'. That Panorama can be bought in other guises off the App Store for less than a quid .. and speeding up things .. is only going to make IOS 6 appear slightly snappier is a tall order to demand £600 of my hard earned cash.

...

Im a big Apple fan and own many of their products .. but this smacks of a downhill trend .. which has to be shaken NOW

FYI, here in the UK, Siri started out as scarcely a beta product a year ago - it hasn't improved at all in that time. So hopefully that addresses your remaining reason to get the Iphone5.

Seems to be a pattern here...
Apple show off novel feature at launch event (carefully mocked-up to hype expectations)
People buy into that feature.
People discover it's not that good/reliable/well-supported etc.
People complain.
Apple does nothing.
People forget in time for next launch event.

Maps, Siri, and even back to the original with Visual Voicemail

I love my iphone but the new maps app just doesnt work, sure it does look nicer and it loads faster which is great but a maps app with incorrect maps and bellow average local search is not good. I tried searching for several places that were listed on google maps, but not on these new maps and also towns names in my area of south wales uk as totaly wrong! Im sure they can update this without a SW update but I expected the app to work, at the moment its a total apple fail.

This is where the bickering and lawsuits stifle innovation and hamper technology for the users.

Should have stuck with google maps. I use maps often but do not have to rely on it. I feel bad for those who routinely rely on maps. Love zooming in and seeing clouds.

Little to do with lawsuits and everything to do with Apple knowing that it cannot grow it's revenue forever based only on selling devices. At some point (and I'd argue we are seeing it now) they run out of ideas to add to the iphone. And then people stop buying every time they come out with a new one.

So maps is a way to mitigate that future revenue drop off. As is offers. They are trying to muscle into Google's turf. We'll see how it all goes in a few years. But I have a feeling that Google will be forced to use patents just like how Apple has.

The maps load faster than I expected on my 3GS, but yes the coverage is **** over here. There are so many locations that were on Google maps that are missing now. :(

It would have been a lot simpler if Apple just kept the Google maps app the way it was until their maps app was ready. But I guess if they did that there would have been even less new features in iOS 6 and the iPhone 5.

Exactly my point. People ignore that Apple has taken a courageous and strategic stance to eliminate built-in reliance on Google's products, which of course causes some pain for human beings naturally averse to change.

AGAIN: in just a few minutes of testing, I have found Apple Maps to be highly accurate and responsive. Nevertheless, to expect it to be at the same level as a seven-year old crowd-sourced Maps app by Google is absolutely IDIOTIC...give it a few days and things will surely be EVEN better.

And what the hell is this reaction of NOT buying a phone just because of a new Maps app? Is that the only thing you do on an iPhone? Incredible.

It is a big part of the phone usage - I don't have (nor should I have to buy) extra navigation equipment. My iPhone used to be good enough for daily usage, now, the first picture i get has done away with all subway stations at Wall Street... in Manhattan, i mean love Apple all you want, but please don't be Apple apologists instead of argumenting the facts.

As it is right now it would be better if Apple just removed the internal Google Maps app and left it to somebody to come up with an app in the store - this is how useless the maps app is for me.

If people are looking at other options it may be because they see this as an important thing, everything map related will tie into this turd - click on an address, see whats around me etc. this all launches this new app, so why wouldn't people want to think it over? Android have google maps integrated and if this is the tipping point for the then so be it, it's a free market and Apple isn't the victim here, customers are - why the need to shout down people that don't do what you want?

I will wait patiently for a Google Maps app for iOS. I just hope Apple will approve such an app.

I just hope Google will produce such an app. If I were them then I wouldn't bother as it's looking like iOS having crap maps will push a lot of people towards Android.

And even if they do release a Google maps app, as someone has stated, it won't help all the thousands of existing iOS apps that use the built-in maps. They will all go from using decent Google maps on iOS5 to rubbish Apple maps when running on iOS6. As a map app developer this is the most annoying part for me.

Use maps.google.com on your phone, then add to home screen. Rotate to landscape for true full screen. Problem temporarily solved.
