This wasn't ready for prime time and never should have been pushed out.

They should have stuck with Google maps for another year or however long it would take. There was no pressing need to boot them except for competition and to say they have their own maps.

Wow. Everyone is criticising an app they didn't use much before iOS 6...

Maps is one of my most used apps. I'm constantly on the go for work and use my phone as my GPS to find where XYZ office park is located in a town/major metro area that I'm not familiar with. If I can't rely on my maps to provide accurate directions then I'm in a bad way.

The new Maps app is the one feature from Apple I hate. They should have kept Google Maps. The 3D flyover is cool but I prefer Streetview when I want to look around an area before going there. Am living in Germany and I found some maps in Black and White of areas near me. Apple needs to go extremely fast to catch up to Google quality maps. I also can not wait for the Google Maps to appear in the App Store.

People are right to critise. I really dont feel it is ready for release. Not outside the US anyway. My house is just a load of huge pixels so nothing useful till you reach the nearest city! It's not even like apple dont have these maps as you can see my house in find my friends/find my iphone, so I wonder if its a licensing issue.

Hope apple get this improved quickly but for now I shall be sticking to maps.google.com

I have to admit it sucks. Sorry Apple but this is far from Primetime.
My house is located in the wrong town and county. It's 55 years old! How do you et that wrong? Entire freeway interchanges in NJ are missing and they are years old.
It shows stores and such long out of business. Borders anyone?
I know Apple will work hard to improve. But this reeks of corporate squabbling between Apple and Google and a rushed release.

I like the app, it's clean looking, fast and I really like the 3d buildings, but clearly it wasn't ready to be released to the public as a replacement for Google maps.

For the time being be patient, I'm positive that apple will make make improvements to it over time, but it really shouldn't have been released just yet.

I for one really don't miss google maps that much simply because I have never relied on it to get me around. I bought navigon a long time ago for all of my turn-by-turn needs, so again, I don't miss it. Heck, when I get my iPhone 5 I probably won't use the apple maps for turn-by-turn either. Just saying.

People can submit errors within the application too. I know it isn't an immediate fix, but the crowd sourced corrections can help with regards to map points.

There is also http://maps.google.com that actually works well with Safari and iOS. I know it isn't a full fix.

So complaining about a standard app that's been there since day 1 that no longer functions correctly on a luxurious smart phone is wrong?

If i wanted buggy issues I'd stick with android. You pay a premium for apple because of the cohesive ecosystem and this app isn't sticking.

Comments like that are ridiculous. What's the point of a smartphone if it's features don't work, especially navigation, one of the best reasons to have a smart phone.

Not sure if your being sarcastic but many people (me included) did use the prior version of maps. For me it came very handy when travelling; I also have dedicated gps/mapping applications (motionX and Tom-Tom) but the prior version was very handy when I couldn't install these much bigger stand-alone mapping applications due to space limitations on my iPhone.

Apple's version needs alot of work-it's pretty to look at but it is lacking substance.

I expect Apple's taken the view that it's not going to harm them in the long run, even if it takes a while to fix. People forget the old bad stuff.

Convo in 2014:

iPhone user 1: Hey, remember when this awesome maps app was really cruddy back in iOS 6?
iPhone user 2: Huh? Whu? Whatever, I can pay for coffee with my fricking iPhone 7, how awesome is that??

I'm getting weird things like this happening when viewing the St. Louis, Missouri area.

Strange thing is, a co-worker running iOS 6 can view this same area perfectly fine. I have tried a hard reset, but get the same results.

Public transportation is very important in cities like NewYork, DC and Boston. Those gov employees and private contractors take metro all the times.

Very good points indeed!!

Apple just handed Google a golden opportunity

Apple just handed Google a golden opportunity....obviously they couldn't do a maps app before. Now I say it's 'game on'. Google should do a dedicated maps app and release it.

It would give Apple some competition to fix this.

And seriously Apple.....you have $100 billion in cash....why go with TomTom as the only provider?

Apple Maps is clearly not even in beta stage. What were they thinking? :(

I've been using Apple Maps since beta 1, and in Chicago, IL it's worked very well for me. Two big downsides: their traffic overlay is hard to see (opposite of the Google Maps implementation that went over the street names!) and it sucks the battery down FAST in turn-by-turn if you leave the screen on.

I think the largest component to a successful mapping system is a good way for users to offer corrections. The mapping platform is only as good as the data. Google offered many ways to add and correct their maps, significantly increase the utility and accuracy over time. I've reported errors in Apple Maps, but it doesn't seem like they're jumping on making corrections yet.

So Apple, please give folks a a fairly straightforward way to update your mapping data! Are we supposed to make updates in Open Street Map, and is that only for physical corrections or can we fix our business locations as well there? Do we have to go through Yelp to fix POIs?

The only way to overcome this bad press is to tell people what your plan is to fix it. Reasonable people never expected this is be perfect from the start...

(PS - I have a gut feeling that Google is going to hold on a Maps app for a little while, to make people really squirm with Apple's app.)

Apple has over 100 billion dollars. Why don't they just buy Google Maps and overlay their UI on top of it? Why buy mapping data that is years old?

Because, in case you haven't noticed, Apple and Google aren't on good terms. They switched to their own solution precisely because they wanted to stop paying Google and giving them the ad revenue.

However, you can still download a web app for your iPhone from www.google.com/maps. It will prompt you to do so the first time you visit the site. It works pretty well and you have the best of both worlds.
