Apple's thermonuclear war on Google seems to be affecting Apple's own customers more than Google unfortunately...

This has nothing to do with Apple going thermonuclear on Google and everything to do with Google hindering Apple's ability to move forward and innovate. For example, Google restricting APIs that would allow Apple to implement turn-by-turn navigation.

10.2 Restrictions on the Types of Applications that You are Permitted to Build with the Maps API(s). Except as explicitly permitted in Section 8 (Licenses from Google to You) or the Maps APIs Documentation, you must not (nor may you permit anyone else to) do any of the following:

[…]

(c) No Navigation, Autonomous Vehicle Control, or Enterprise Applications. You must not use the Service or Content with any products, systems, or applications for or in connection with any of the following:

(i) real time navigation or route guidance, including but not limited to turn-by-turn route guidance that is synchronized to the position of a user’s sensor-enabled device.

This is Google's doing. What other choice did Apple have?

My guess is they did not renew their license with Google to have the maps just like they did with the YouTube app.

It will take some time for Apple to get their map data going. I think this is another case of using people as beta-testers to find all the issues since their employees can only do so much.

Maps works great for me, haven't had any issues to this point.

this whole 'licensing' thing..yea right. It was never an issue about licensing! Apple wants to remove Google services from its iPhone. This was NEVER about licensing.

Wow. Everyone is criticising an app they didn't use much before iOS 6...

I think you're missing the point. They're complaining because this app replaced the stellar Google Maps app that many people relied on. The problems with Apple's Maps were heavily discussed for months in our forums during the beta period, and many of those problems still exist. For something as important as maps/transit, Apple's app needed to be at least on par with Google Maps before completely replacing it.

"How's it supposed to work?" "Then why the ******* doesn;t it!?"
Then he fired most of them.

Dude, he did not fire anyone (for that incident), do not exaggerate things ... Just the management got shuffled across the team. I for one second do not care about the managers; Kudo to the engineers who worked tails off - may be this incident they failed ...

I'm going to give Apple's new maps an honest shot, but I am really glad I paid the $10 yearly fee for MotionX. It hasn't led me astray yet.

I tended to never use Google Maps while driving because it didn't read turn by turn out loud to me. I had to look at the screen or have my wife hold the phone and look read the directions to me. People act like the Google maps app was the optimal way to get driving directions, and it really wasn't. I used MapQuest's free app for a long time, and then moved to MotionX after realizing how much better it was, even though you have to pay to fully use it.

Thank you!

I totally agree... The Google Maps app was great for locating things but useless for navigation (especially if nobody else was in the car to do the navigating). And it's not like Google or Bing suddenly don't work for finding / directing you to where you need to go. Should the Maps app work? Absolutely. But your world isn't going to come to a screetching halt because you have to change your processes a little bit.

Just grab Waze or one of the paid nav apps if you need it to work immediately. Apple won't let this be a pain point any longer than it needs to be... and I suspect once they really figure this mapping thing out, it'll eventually rival Google's app.

Well it was a thermonuclear war on Android, not Google - and you don't know that switching from Google's maps was entirely Apple's idea. It probably wasn't.

That's true, but honestly I cannot see this as Google cutting them off. After all, Google makes money from Apple licensing its maps (along with Google getting data from iPhone users).

Lower satellite resolutions and no street view are the things I don't like about the new maps. Taking out the old YouTube app in iOS 6 was also very disappointing (and now for the moment there are no official YouTube apps for iPad!!), but I'm pretty satisfied with the rest of the update.

Apple just handed Google a golden opportunity....obviously they couldn't do a maps app before. Now I say it's 'game on'. Google should do a dedicated maps app and release it.

I think you are missing the point. If you are google, what have you got to benefit fixing Apple's problems? Keep the best parts (with significant proprietary data) for yourself and see how that sticks it up Apple

It would give Apple some competition to fix this.

That above would be the real competition for Apple. Something that reduces the growth of iPhone sales

Exactly. like I said, maps on iOS had turn by turn for years but google didn't let apple turn it on. Why are you guys so friendly with google when they treat Apple like ****.

Yeah, my iPhone has no idea where I live in DC, it can't handle single letter streets or something. It's really bad.

Try

100 M ST NE Washington DC 20002

It's horrible.

No question, this transition is going to be rough on users, and it’s going to take a while. Apple simply had to start somewhere, sometime, but that doesn’t help us right now. (If Google’s smart, they’ll release a maps app BUT make us sweat a while first!)

Meanwhile, I’ll use Google’s iOS maps.google.com (not a full substitute) in conjunction with Apple’s Maps and the Navigon MyRegion GPS app (which is excellent but I see complaints about the latest update).

If Apple and Google can’t agree on a maps partnership that works for both of them, it’s easy to lay all the blame on Apple for that. Easy, but not reasonable.

Can I ask why people can't just install the google maps web app. Yes I realize it's a tad slower then having a native app but wouldn't it at least curb the bitching or some of it anyway?

Google Maps app will be in the App Store shortly. Hold your horses. Google has a 5 year head-start over Apple's app.

And you know that how?

I love Apple as much as most people on here - but this is extremely poor by them.

Sadly there are many people here who cannot accept any criticism of Apple, constructive or otherwise, without jumping blindly to defend them. In this case they have not done a good job at all, and the best thing to do would be to admit that and try to fix the problem as soon as possible.

Deep breaths people. Google maps didn't have a 30 km ring road around my city for 1 year after it was built. The sky didn't fall.

No Street View!!?

I haven't updated my iOS and I'm not going to do so for one simple reason. There is no Google Map. Flyover can not replace street view (at least for the next few years), and I use street view every time I need to use Google Map.

The Maps application has always been one of my favorite and most commonly used app on iPhone since 2009.

This new one just doesn't work right. It turned into some lame Waze clone with iOS 6. I want the old app back. :(

- Missing bookmarks in directions.
- Missing manual forward/back in directions (iPhone 4S and 5).
- Missing buttload of satellite images, or obscured with clouds.
- Missing accurate maps.
- Missing street view.
- Missing public transport.

Google, HELP!!! PLEASE!

Q for TomTom users

Since I don't use TomTom: Are these issues and map errors also present in TomTom devices with the latest map updates?

I really don't understand these errors (especially the high-profile ones) since Apple seems to have licensed the maps from TomTom who has been updating/correcting these maps for years ?

Very poor.

:(

wish they kept google as another option plus theres a nasty bug in ios 6 when you get an email or text massage most times it doesnt ring:mad:
