The worst part about Apple Pay cash is that you have to have two factor authentication to use it. I don’t like that so I deactivated it.

Nice tip.
I hate 2FA as well so I may never use Apple Pay cash even if I want to.

Just use Venmo
Uh no. That’s a separate app to download. Why not use what’s already included in the OS? I already have Square Cash besides and that includes that sick black debit card. :)

It’s more secure...is typing a code really an inconvenience? And yes I also frequently log in too.

Typing a code is ok. It is the fear of being locked down without an option to recover. Current security question, I can restore the account all myself. With 2FA, I need a separate phone number to make sure I still can access my account even if my phone is lost. Higher cost for possibly the same level of security. Does not sound like a nice deal. And no, no friends, no family members.

Definitely a valid reason. I happen to have a business line that can receive texts so it wouldn’t be a scare for me. But even then I never forget passwords and use a password manager as a mere convenience so I probably wouldn’t get locked out.

Wish we had this in the U.K. :(

And Apple are quietly trolling us... downgraded my iPhone SE to 11.2.6 and upon restoring it’s there in my Wallet app.

If you can afford an iPhone x, do you really find situations where you need to borrow $7? This sending money to people seems like a gimmick

You must live in bubble, I use this and Venmo quite a lot. I like Apple Pay better, but nothing you can do about non-iPhone users. In the past month, I used it to pay for Girl Scout cookies I order from a co-worker. Didn't have to get to the bank to get cash and didn't have to write a check...

Yet another standard. I've never seen anyone use Apple Pay before.
Apple Pay just uses the same infrastructure as contactless payments - which are used very widely in the UK Device payments (Apple Pay, Android Pay) increasingly so, especially with a higher transaction limit than contactless bank cards. I use Apple Pay to pay in cafes, public transport (busses and Metro), pubs, petrol stations, restaurants... I hardly use cash at all.

I would love to get Apple Pay Cash in the UK...

Seems like anytime I go to send money via Apple Pay in iMessage, I am told this person cannot receive payments at this time. Never had it work a single time. Even tried sending to myself and get the same error.

They need to set it up or they need to update their phone and set it up.

I suppose if you owed your friend $8500, then yeah, bitcoin makes total sense...

Ah, seems your not aware that bitcoin is divisible by nine decimal points. So you could send $0.0001 if you wanted.

The more you know.

Yet another standard. I've never seen anyone use Apple Pay before. I've got no hope for any payment system that's not an open standard or at least cross-platform. Pretty sure the chance of my friends using this to handle dinner payments in the future instead of Venmo is next to 0.

In fact, I've seen more restaurants here that take Venmo than those who take Apple Pay, and Venmo isn't even really made for that. It's just the only thing so far that doesn't involve any BS.

Doesn't make sense for domestic transfer of small amounts between trusted parties. It's designed for the complete opposite use case.

Explain why it doesn’t make sense. It’s nearly free, it’s instant, there is no minimal amount. Venmo/PayPal/Apple pay require approval and you need to create an account. You don’t need approval or an account with bitcoin, it’s free software anyone can run.

Actually, you don't really know that, do you? It seems like it is very much up to the banks and not Apple. Or to say it diffrently, it's very likely a factor of negotiation between the "two" parties.

Come on! Negotiations is a factor, agreed. But, who makes the decision to handle negotiations nationally before internationally? Apple has the resources to make something like this happen in every country iPhone is on-sale at the same time if they wanted to, but they chose not to. And Apple Pay Cash is just another example in a long line of examples of Apple stalling the availability of products and features internationally.

If you're talking about straight up BTC transfers, it's neither free nor instant. It's the opposite, a high transaction fee to receive 3 confirmations within ~30 minutes*. And then you have to convert BTC to/from your local currency, which is the worst part. You can maybe solve the speed/fee with Lightning network, but that's not ready, and idk how trustless or fast it is. Not that any of that matters because few know how to use BTC in the first place.

* Varies by network load. Load is very low right now, but fees were $1-10/xact earlier this year, and it would be higher if people actually used it for daily transactions. Sucks cause this means you never know how long your transfer will take with a fixed fee.

If you can't get approved for a bank or Venmo account and aren't a criminal, I have no idea what you're doing. I regularly use Venmo to send between 1 cent and $1000 instantly with 0 fees, and so does everyone I know. Don't get me wrong, I love BTC for huge or cross-border transfers (I had someone pay me $80K with it at once) or for storage of wealth, but that's all it's made for.

$0.0001 with a fee higher than the amount you send, great.

They use the same hardware, fortunately, but it's still its own payment protocol. The stores have to set it up, Apple has to agree with the banks, and the users have to use iOS and link their bank accounts. For user to user, both users have to agree to use Apple Pay Cash. And all of this requires an Internet connection.

I said it previously—you can’t send bitcoin with Apple Pay Cash.

Just because you “know” something doesn’t mean you’ve actually been educated.
