As a non-professional who couldn't tell an okay shot from a good shot or a good shot from a great shot... these are terrible. They have a disconcerting quality that makes your eye tell your brain that, "Hey bud, there's something not quite right about what I'm lookin' at here. You wanna analyze it?" Then when your brain finds the mistakes you just can't unsee them. The software definitely needs more time in the oven.

Apple should really find out what the good folks over at Focos are doing with image processing.
Had another look at that selfies clip thinking I might have missed something the first time. But I honestly can't say that I think they're horrible. Sure they aren't professional quality shots with optimum lighting conditions etc., but to me they seem passable for the use they're intended for.

Can and will 'Portrait Lighting' be refined in future software releases? Undoubtedly.

crazy, I know the first girl on the video, she's so pretty in some way, how end it there? she modeling sometimes... I need ask more details of how end in a apple ad, interesting hehe.

Hey, to each his own. My horrible is your passable. Your passable is my horrible. Tomato/Tomato. I don't think anyone is comparing them against professional quality shots ('cept you maybe). They just don't look good compared to regular I just woke up and my cat is doing something stupid again shots. Maybe you have a more forgiving eye.

I'm also not sure what you think they're intended use is supposed to be. To me, they're supposed to be looked at. Is Apple going to make them better? No doubt. Until they do, people should really look at Focos and what they're doing with portrait lighting. Very similar to what Samsung does 'cept Focos is way more in depth.

looking at the catchlight in their eyes they’ve been lit professionally.
The end of the advert says "additional software used" which suggests there may have been post-processing applied (maybe to add the catchlight), but I don't think they'd use additional professional lighting

I think people are too critical. The best camera is the one on you right? Well quick in the moment photos in portrait mode can be fun, jovial, and just a cool way to maybe say hello to a friend/social media. I’m not sure anyone is expecting this to be a replacement for a DSLR or workstations where photos are maticilously being processed. Calm down.

What a cool documentary highlighting the problem with our society: our fascination with self, and the technology that enables our....what?.... oh.... commercial for Apple.

Nevermind.
It's absurd. Good news is, Apple's obsession with features I don't care about has saved me thousands in phone upgrades.

A friend was over watching TV and said he had no idea what the commercial was for. It took me a few seconds to realize it too. Maybe they should have put "shot on iPhone" at the beginning.
And overall I'm not super impressed by these effects. They're better than nothing or maybe doing it yourself, but sometimes the effect looks really forced. I would not use it very much.

IIRC there was a lot of talk on their commercial they did in Greece of local people last year with the iPhone 7. through the screen of the iPhone it looked different, then the still shown on screen was a perfectly lighted portrait with extra lighting used. this stuff is a gimmick. I own a DSLR and know how to use a camera and getting the correct light, but their commercials are a bit much trying to push in thinking people can get excellent studio quality photos.

By the end of the games yesterday, I was pretty much sick of this commercial. Plus, the photos look like they were shot on a DSLR, not an iPhone X. Not to say the X doesn't take great photos, but c'mon.
