The M5 MacBook Air is an awesome machine with an awesome processor, and awesome display.

However, since I tried the MacBook Neo, I’m in love with the smaller form factor. Not with the trackpad, and definitely not with the SoC that powers it, but such a compact body is really nice.

I know it’s not possible or economically viable for Apple to put an M5 inside the Neo, and I know that’s not going to happen, but for me it would be the ideal machine.

Hopefully, once the Neo gets the A19 Pro, it will have a better balance between specs, size and price.

While the Neo is amazing for the price, the SSD speeds on the M5 are like 5X that of the Neo.

That makes a noticeable difference in the experience, for any type of user.

(to say nothing of all the other upgrades on even a base MBA M5 vs a Neo)

And they no longer seem to quietly (in person) match Authorized Retailer deals that are within 10% off (as these are).

I tried last week. Frustrating.
Why wouldn’t they want to make the sale and so price matching? Unless they have some agreement with resellers they won’t do that to give resellers better volume as surely the profits go down when you sell for less but not if you’re selling 1000 per day at $100 profit per unit vs 200 per day at $250 profit per unit.

It's times like these when you have to stop and truly appreciate how far this tech has come. The insane amount of computing power in this form factor, for under $1k USD (even after all of the runaway inflation AND supply chain crunches)...it's insanely great.
Have to thank those workers who are making barely enough to survive and have a miserable life so we can buy our MacBooks cheaper. Seems like contrary to what we should want in life - only the shareholders win the biggest but consumerism drives it.

I don't get it either.
When you've got a customer there, ready to buy into the ecosystem, you lock them up on the spot.

Yeah, the screen on the Air is noticeably better, the SSD is 5 times faster, the trackpad feels much better, the sound system, the battery…

I guess what I wanted is a smaller MacBook Air after all. But because that’s not going to happen, I guess I’ll just get a Mac mini and in the future, if I need a laptop, I can always get an A19 Pro or an A20 Pro MacBook Neo.

This seems to have been the ONE time that a significant deal appeared right when we needed it. My adult daughter needed to replace her dying Macbook. She's in the theatre biz, and doesn't need much of anything in the way of computing power that a Neo couldn't provide. But she was struggling with the idea, thinking, "what if I have to put some sort of higher-end video of my work together" and was leaning toward the MBAir even though her budget is really, really tight and most of the specs are overkill. She was still on the fence between a Neo vs. an Air using the Education pricing when this deal popped up, for $50 less than the edu pricing. Done and done.

On the flip side, my wife, a freelance writer who doesn't "get" computers and never uses anything more advanced than MSWord is thinking she wants a laptop so she can work outside the house occasionally (she has a Mini at home). she is the perfect customer for the Neo.

Problem is with buying an Air now, is you’re kind of putting yourself on a shorter upgrade cycle. The Air will get a refreshed 120hz OLED in 2 years time, and it will be a must have upgrade. I feel the MBP is on a much longer upgrade, especially the base model, I’m not particularly excited about OLED or a touch screen, mostly because comparing my MBP to my IPP, the difference in display quality is already absolutely minimal. With this RAM crisis, the smart choice might be to spend money now, and keep your mac into the early 30s.

It would be an issue for those really wanting an oled air, if you're one of those people, then yea, maybe not the time to upgrade unless your old Mac is really on its last legs, but for me personally, for what I use my MacBook for, I could care less if it got a better screen. I find the screen on mine quite nice and very good quality. I went from the m2 to m5 because I can see price hikes coming in the near future, especially if they do end up doing those upgrades to the air, I highly doubt they would keep the same price as they do now.

So I rather get the latest and greatest now while the prices remained steady and now hold out much longer for things to stabilize eventually and hopefully by then, if the air got some meaningful upgrades, they will no longer cost a kidney to obtain lol

However, since I tried the MacBook Neo, I’m in love with the smaller form factor.
But the Neo is not smaller. Volumetrically, the Neo is about 5% larger than the 13" MBA. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot to love about the Neo given the price, but it is not the smaller form factor.

Now if Apple were to relaunch the 11" MBA but with a retina screen and an A18 SoC....
