Yeah man that makes complete sense. We should ignore massive user demand that is driving the increase in AI usage. Let’s go back to the 15th century and ride horseback and fight wars with swords then memory prices will go back to normal. Nobody needs tech progress they just need low memory prices for a middle ages lifestyle.

So the starting price for the M5 Pro in Canada is now $2350 CDN. Sheesh, $500 more than my M4 Pro was when I bought it when they were annouced. I didn't include the 13% tax. Yikes.

I’m glad I pulled the trigger on a 14 inch M5 Pro MacBook Pro before the prices jumped. I was going to hold out for the Mini, but using the laptop as a desktop works just as well. Yes, it costs a good bit more, but it comes with 1 TB of storage and you get a laptop. I’m not sure the Mac Mini is worth it at this price.

The Studio full specs costs as much as a small car.
Glad I had Mackbook Pro M4 Max back in 2024 and he will need to stand the test of time. Not upgrading soon

For everyone angry about price increases I hope you're putting your money where your mouth is and not using AI since it's the cause of all these price increases.

You really think a small handful of people refusing to use AI is going to make even a scratch in global demand for AI and somehow cause Apple to lower its prices?

Meanwhile, you’d be giving up AI, which, to be perfectly honest, is one of the coolest and most useful things computers can do now.

If you’re upset about higher hardware prices, fine. But personally boycotting AI isn’t going to reverse the hundreds of billions of dollars being poured into AI infrastructure or suddenly make memory and other components cheap again.

I agree is some ways... using Claude to diagnose network and Mac/PC issues and it makes using Google look laughable. Much as I hate the price increases from AI I wouldn't totally want to go back.

Man Apple, why? You give us last year's tech (M5) with great specs and the newest M6 with meh specs. My issue is that I have an M1 MBP with 64 gigs of ram that I have been using since it was released. I'm now finding 5 years later that it is kind of getting long in the tooth. I do nothing with hardcore graphics so the M6 mini would be totally fine but the max ram on that is 32GB.. I guess I could roll the dice and see if that works - I don't think the extra $1500 or so to get an M5 with 64GB of ram is worth the cost. Man o man...

Yeah, the M6 base is 1249 plus tax. I bought my M4 last year for 609+tax (through Openbox.ca). That's insane, but happy I got my M4 Air and M4 Mini last year before all this madness happened. I will be good for a decade lol.

Same here, and I stumbled into a Microcenter deal and saved $300 on it. At these prices I won't be buying anything soon after this.

AI just makes it easier instead of having to trawl though pages and pages of info that can be good or bad. Not that AI will be right on everything but I'd rather Claude do it in seconds instead of wasting hours.

Wow 1500 increase for the base ultra. I got my m3 ultra open box at microcenter for 3200 last year! Guess I lucked out!

Honestly, after a while, you do have your websites/forums lined up where you usually do your research.

Unless it is a really niche specific scenario, you do not waste hours. Anthropic/Open AI are just crawling the web, and creating "summarization" for you. A lot of key information might be left out without you noticing it. Private forums and the like are usually not included since you need an account for those

I found this out after trying to research mechanic advice/repair process, homebrew and topics like that that are not usually that open in the web. Claude gave you the "just in time" right answer. But if you are in Step 0, receiving Step 20 is not a proper solution if you don't know what went on in-between. In terms of troubleshooting Linux, the answers gave where pretty generalistic, and I kinda felt they werent that precise, so I went instead to the official documentation.

There is also the fact that you are probably missing out about the process of how a certain user arrived to a certain conclusion/solution. LLMs do have their applications tho, for example, finding a key process out of a huge documentation stack or stuff like that. But other than that, I'm wary of it.

No, Apple never produces new devices with old chip. Even under warranty, if they have to replace the entire device without repair, you get a refurbished one.

Apple is really screwing this up. Yeah, fine, everyone want's to freak out about the AI stuff, take advantage of it. They can raise pricing all they want on everything but they should not be doing that on the Neo and the entry level Mini.

This is the time where students and people shopping, most of which don't buy apple computers, will look around and decided the Neo at $500 is a great deal instead of the $900 plastic Acer piece of garbage.

You begin life time customer lock in who will be loyal across the board for a long time.

Looks like my M2 Pro will stick around much longer. No real need to update, so I'll hold out until hopefully prices come down around the M7/M8 era..
