I’d be curious to know if this was Apple’s laptop roadmap all along or if the rMB/non Touch Bar rMBP were supposed to replace the Air but customers weren’t biting so it forced Apple to update the Air? I mean there’s nothing radical in the re-design of the Air. Certainly not anything that couldn’t have been done 2-3 years ago. Would love the real story on this.

I'm still baffled by their decision to keep using the Air brand

The lineup and its naming has become a huge ugly mess

Could've been so much simpler and so much more streamlined:

iPad - iPad Pro
iPhone - iPhone Pro
Mac - Mac Pro
iMac - iMac Pro
MacBook - MacBook Pro

Air is a freakin' monkey wrench

Don't even get me started on XS Max

What are they thinking????

I agree, I'm truly confused by it - it's highly undesirable. All I can think is, that either, the name goes back to Steve Jobs days along with the beach tables in Apple stores maybe and management are terrified to change this OR maybe, just maybe, the Air name is bought by traditionalists?
Other than that, I can't believe that the name is still around.
All very confusing. It's a new product that really should not of made it to market. THere's MacBook for company and Pro for heavier work. Where the Air fits in, I really don't know.

MacBook - MacBook Pro

Read it as MacBook Air - MacBook Pro. The "generic" MacBook will be discontinued.

What makes a device Pro anyway? Can't just name a more expensive model Pro without defining criteria.

This Air will cannibalize the MacBook Pro 13" into the trash bin.

Maximising profit opportunities. Is there anything else for a company to be thinking about?

Yes, actually, but apparently worshipping capitalism means we are all supposed to kiss the asses of corporations and defend them when they do things that aren’t remotely in the interests of consumers.

So what does that mean, will the MacBook line be more powerful than the Air line?

Makes no sense.. if it was a mid-range model, between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro, it should have a dual-core i7 option, which the MacBook at least has...

That "sub $1000" rumor dried up and blew away like dead, autumnal weeds.

Yeah, I was set to pick up two, but this looks like “wait another year” to put it diplomatically.

The 5W chip is probably a deal with Intel to use chips with two defective cores at a low TDP, so Intel gets rid of chips that nobody else wants at a low cost so their yield problems diminish, while Apple get a lower parts cost from them, hence the otherwise nonexistent part number, much like the Radeon Pro 580 is a Radeon RX 480 that didn’t meet the TDP requirements to go in a bin that actually sells in the more demanding PC market.

If that didn’t result in $1500 or so to get pretty much the same end product as the cheaper rMB, I’d call it a smart move and a win for the consumer. Put 2xTB3 and a third gen keyboard in the rMB and I’m all over it at the current price point, but this bumps the price for very limited gain, ditches the color I wanted, throws in fan noise, and just screams “it’ll sell like hot cakes anyway, who cares if it’s any good, computers are dead to us anyway”.

They should discontinue 12 inch MacBook. It was never a good size at first place.
OUCH! Totally disagree. I think it's the best laptop size of all time. I travel the world and have used the 2015, 16 and now 17 year models. It's perfect!

It is a mess. But I think it has a lot to do with Steve Jobs legacy then anything else.

The Air was his baby and Tim Cook wouldn’t dare kill off something so near and dear to Steve.

Think you've hit the nail on the head. It's like the beach coloured tables in the stores that look so year 2000, but they've commented that they can't be changed due to Steve's ideas! Crazy I guess! Never a fan of the Air sadly!

CORPORATE GREED !!

This chip is useless other than web browsing and think and iPad Pro can run circles around it. My MacBook Air is an i7, 2.2 which is really fast compared to this and bought it years ago !!

Wow. So, you can't open a Pages document?. Create a spreadsheet? Send an email? Build a Keynote presentation? Edit a photo? Create an iMovie? That's unfortunate. I can do that stuff on my 2017 iPad, but you think the new MBA is useless for everything but web browsing.

Or, is it possible, that you are engaging in a bit of hyperbole?

This computer is intended for the everyday consumer, student, and office worker. Do you think it is really incapable of doing routine computing tasks?

Wow so to thin the bloody thing down and keep the battery life they had to sacrifice performance?

Would have been a killer machine if they'd just kept the old enclosure and updated it accordingly.
This is Apple... I'd be worried if they didn't thin the machine at the cost of everything else.

The aim of a business is to make money and, ergo, profits. I have no problem with that. The manner in what that happens is important though.

However, all things being said, its up to the individual consumer to decide if they're happy to drop their pants and to grab their ankles. Personally speaking, having been an Apple owner since the Macintosh SE/30… I replaced my iPhone a month ago with a Samsung Galaxy. While nothing earth shattering in of itself it is the thin end of the wedge. Its my belief that companies will only listen to consumers while you give money to their competitors.

And I thought that philosophy behind Apple is all about symbioses of hardware with software. That a quality and innovative product can help people create and push them further. Well ... silly me.
...
People like you should realize that Apple is here because of idealists not capitalists. Think different ...

I’m confused by your closing paragraph. How would it make sense for the MacBook to be thinner and lighter than the Air? Surely that’s what Air means? Is that the situation with the previous generation?

I'm sure it will be more than enough for the people buying these. More performance using a third less power? People will complain about everything.
