Your machine has a 64-bit processor. It will run Snow Leopard no question.

Leopard isn't full 64-bit because it supports 32-bit processors.
Tiger wasn't full 64-bit because it supported 32-bit processors.
Panther wasn't full 64-but because it supported 32-bit processors.
Jaguar wasn't 64-bit at all, even though it runs on the PowerMac G5 (64-bit processor)

G5=64-bit processor
Core Duo=32-but processor
Core 2 Duo 64-bit processor.

Nothing. They also state that it will be an entirely 64-bit OS on the web page, and there is a crappy "32-bit mode" in the developer builds right now that has you restart an application to use it thus.

So if it's 64-bit like they said it would be, Core Duo computers won't run it.
Actually, the Apple web site says "Snow Leopard extends the 64-bit technology in Mac OS X". It does not say it is 64-bit only.

At this point, I am fairly certain that you will require a Core 2 Duo machine to run the OS, as it is 64-bit.

PowerPC is being dropped, and I can see Core Duo (32-bit) not working.

OH MY FUC*ING GOD!!!!

are you FUC*ING serious????? this is rediculous..... this is the worst news i have heard in a long long time... my poor old CD MBP will not be able to upgrade??? thats pathetic. poor machine, its been so good.. and i wont be able to upgrade for a good 2/3 years.

*nervous sounds*

Eerrrmmm... Disclaimer: We know nothing.

I'm merely basing this off what Apple has said. PowerPC is definitely not going to be supported, and they're trying for a 64-bit kernel in Snow Leopard, so we'll see how far they go with that.

haha sorry, its just wierd... because i woke up and thought "i really need a new laptop, too bad i dont have any money".. then i come on MR (yes im lame i know, im still in bed haha) and the first post i read is yours saying CD wont be supported.. so you know.. PANIC ATTACK hahaha.

Nothing special imo, since Apple Snow Leopard wont have any interface changes, so gonna look the same. As for 64-bit we could see some improvement in Applications but thats about it.. I've used Vista 64-bit its actually slower with some games, faster with applications, but not noticeable..

You're forgetting Grand Central and OpenCL...

Does it really matter? There will be next to zero new features in OS 10.6, the only new features are basically it taking advantage of a 64bit processor. Since your computer isn't 64bit does it really matter?

oh my, just because YOU do not want it doesnt mean that OTHERS dont want it.

What are you talking about? I do want Snow Leopard. I have a 64bit processor in my machine. Since really the only bits that are being updated are things that your hardware can't take advantage of I can't see a reason for someone on a 32bit machine to upgrade. Unless you just want bragging rights that you the latest and greatest, or you really just want to give Apple $129.

If you really want to just give them some money maybe you should buy some shares.

oh, so you know exactly what SL is going to do performance wise?? you know that for a fact? no one really knows what is going to benefit from the upgrade, so until that time i remain uncertain as to whether i am going to purchase it.

shares? no.. have you seen the price of them lately? have you seen how bad america is performing even? about time they finally woke up to theirselves.

So hold up. You're freaking out because snow leopard might not be available for your machine, yet you're berating me because I'm making suggestions based on the facts that Apple has given?

WOW

yes i freaked out, am i not entitled to do that?? but where on the apple web site does it actually say that it will be FULLY 64-bit? or where anywhere.... it just came as a surprise to me because Tallest Skull said it so confidently.

and no i didnt berate you, i questioned your knowledge of the new OS based on the current information that we have.

It doesn't say it will be full 64bit, but the kernel will be, and the only new features aren't available on your hardware. Get that through your head.

Skil. ;) No biggie. :p

I apologize for that; I always state pessimistic things as fact so that when people who don't know that I know no more than anyone else see them, they take them as fact and then don't create whiny threads when Apple doesn't live up to the more lofty expectations of some of the people here.

I remember one thread with someone claiming that, because of Grand Central, we will see up to 100x performance with Snow Leopard. :p

Upon a thorough (I won't say "bashing"), he reduced his prediction to 98x.

wow. 100x better?? so the macs would start up in 0.2 of a second? and will rip itunes in 0.5 seconds? hahahaha wow.. pathetic, yet hilarious.

Keep your pants on, you two.

I'm sorry for stating "64-bit natively" as fact, based on what I had read from Apple and reviews of the preview.

PowerPC is out, but Core Duos aren't... so let's just end it now, eh?

he started it, but i will if he will :p

My Penryn MacBook Pro does a standard-length DVD rip in HandBrake in about 2.5 hours.

If he were right, the same rip in Snow Leopard would be done in 1.5 minutes. :D

Not that there's anything wrong with that... it's just impossible.
