It's an AA-battery - who the hell cares? Why would you expect Apple to manufacture their own batteries? That's like expecting computer manufactures to manufacture their own processors, hard drives, RAM, etc... Use what's available.

When Apple decided to offer a battery charger, i knew that something was wrong

i was wondering if Steve really thinks we are a bunch of idiots

when will he propose the Apple coffee machine selling at twice the price of nespresso machine ?

what is actually amazing is that I'm sure that thousands of customers bought this crap... just because Steve pooed it

Why the title of the story focuses on the (negative) aspect of rebranded batteries vs. Apple's new charger design? Does MacRumors have a beef with Apple?

agree with you.

Not too long ago, macrumors said something like: '...apple fails to make true the rumors of such and such...' In that instance, apparently apple _failed_ to satisfy someone rumors and desires!

wait...

apple never manufactures any thing. Why then, should any one assume, that the technology and engineering going into this battery is not apples? Sanyo may be the manufacturer with some signs that it is indeed so.

There, the blog title ends with a question mark, here is an answer...

I'm curious as to why 1/3 of the ratings are negative. The consensus is that Sanyo Eneloops are great (I use them now, and they are MUCH better than the NiMH batteries I used to use).

So Apple choosing to use an existing, great technology is also good news.

So why all the hate?

Alot of Kids are on MacRumors so thats why they rate something like this negative. I personally dont see a negative in this story.

Coming from a green perspective...

alot of you cats seem to be going on about how you amazing a rechargeable batter recharger is so energy efficient and how its 10x greater (or whatever the value is) than any other charger on the market. I beat (most of you) by turning off my TV's in the house near the powerpoint. Most TV standby pulls 1/3 of its stated rating. So you've got a big plasma TV/LCD blasting about 100-200 (from 300-600) Watts, even when its not on. And you still got the pretentious guys talking about how great a charger is compared to the rest because of its EFFICIENCY.

Sorry just saying.... but honestly, if people really gave a ***** about saving electricity, you'd do a little more then spend money on the most high tech recharger...

Eneloops in Apple Charger?

Does this mean we could theoretically have the same idle draw benefits by using an Apple charger and augmenting their 6 included batteries with Eneloops?

...

take it easy... it is only a freaking battery... who cares.

take your nose out of the screen, go outside, the 3D graphics are awesome! You may complain less when you come back.

eh....
I'm hoping this is a joke that I don't get.
An advanced charger should simply charge your batteries in a reletively short amount of time without any compications.
No, an advanced charger should have at least 3 charging modes (trickle, fast, drain-n-charge), be able to charge any number of batteries individually without affecting the others, and have a display that gives useful information. Probably also should cover multiple battery types unlike Apple's, mine does AAA, AA, C, D.

I love my Eneloops. I already use them in my mouse, keyboard, and a few other peripherals around the house. I'll be buying them (assuming they have C size) for my Roomba lighthouses soon. The length of time these things hold a charge is pretty impressive. It was really a perfect choice for Apple when you consider the use case (mouse, keyboard, trackpad).

Ditto that. I wish they'd sell the C and D cells here in the U.S. The spacers are a poor excuse for the real thing.

I bought about 16 AA's and 4 AAA's a year ago, and they've already paid for themselves. These aren't your rechargeables from 10, 20 years ago. These things actually LAST, so it's only logical Apple would choose these. Good going Apple!

I beat you, we do not have a tv... instead we go hiking every day and enjoy nature's 3D graphics and animation/sound effects...

I don't get why people would have any kind of negative attitude towards this...

This is a good thing because the Sanyo Eneloop batters are the best. I use them in everything and love them.

Sure. The idle draw is with no batteries in it, so it really doesn't matter which type you have sitting around not in it.

Sure are a lot of knuckleheads on here this morning.... I've been using the same set of AAA & AA Eneloops I purchased back in 2005. These LSD batteries are far superior than most batteries available today & it's good that Apple has decided to rebrand a top notch battery/system. My combo La Crosse BC charger / Eneloops lets me charge/trickle charge at different rates (200ma-700ma), discharge, refresh batteries at my convenience. These batteries will last a good 5 -7 years with constant use. Go ahead and keep purchasing you're energizers & alkaline batteries every month and then tell me what the good / smart deal is...

I think you have just discovered what means making a brand unique ;) That's the whole Apple business... selling the idea that you're getting the best of the best even though the overprice cannot be justified with that "supreme" quality.

There's a rule in economics and/or marketing if I recall correctly; you just need to create a need in order to sell. Apple has done that with the charger and the batteries... they have sold you the idea that getting its batteries is better than other manufacturer, and reducing the power consumption of the charger is so important that it doesn't matter that you cannot charge more than two AA batteries at the same time nor you can charge any other type of battery.

So for the price of 6 of these batteries and a charger I can buy close to 150 Kirkland branded batteries from CostCo and not have to worry about charging them and the additional cost of that.

If you recycle the batteries when you're done, what's the big deal? Even that fancy Prius has a battery in it that needs to be disposed of eventually...

or just buy a $30 MS wireless mouse that comes with a charger and not have to worry about batteries

been wondering that myself... maybe its as simple as flocking with gizmodo... shrugs.

You just answered your own question. What's better for the environment, recycling/disposing of 6 batteries, or 150?

These do seem rebranded so for those who have a problem with Apple doing this, if you are logical, it has to be a price issue. If so, then here are some comparisons as of 8/12/10:

Apple 6 AA and two holder battery charger - $30 (I'm rounding all numbers)

From Amazon:
4 pack Eneloops - $10, no charger
8 pack - $20, no charger
4 pack with 4 charger -$21
2 pack with 2 holder USB charger - $13

From B&H:
4 pack Eneloops - $10, no charger
8 pack - $20, no charger
4 pack with 4 charger -$18
2 pack with 2 holder USB charger - $13

If you break it down, the price from Amazon and B&H comes out to about $2.5 per battery. The chargers run about $8-10.

Compare that to Apple: 6 x $2.5 = $15 + $10 for charger and you are at $25.

If you do some more research, you will find the one complaint most people have with Eneloops are the chargers. I found Eneloop fanboys prefer other "higher end" chargers which can run $40+. These often charge 8 or more batteries so not a fair comparison there either. But if we look at it, Apple charging $13-15 dollars for their custom 2 pack charger, considering the whole vampire thing, is not a price gouge.

Can you get cheaper deals, sure. Are you being gouged if you buy the Apple ones - no. No SJ reality distortion field on this, pure facts. You are getting some good rebranded (most likely) eneloop batteries and a slightly better charger and no one holding a gun to your head to buy Apple. As for me, I just hate the earth and am going to buy an starter kit from B&H for $32. Includes 8AA, 4AAA plus some C and D convertor holders and a standard 4 pack charger. Sure, I'm drawing more vampire voltage but this is the best price and I don't like the planet anyway.

Also Eneloop can charge AAA, i think many of the house hold items use AAA batteries too.

and one other thing not sure whether the voltage is 120-230V like Eneloop or just 120V (US) only charger
