for some reason the 5 year obsolescence rule does not apply to this product, last time I checked apple was still selling the 2013 model for an outrageous price, hello Tim 5 years old already dude, we need new a new model, I just hope it doesn't cost as much as a 2019 car or a new house. spoiler alert, today apple has re invented the Mac Pro, this is by far the best Mac Pro that apple has ever created, lol, is like i can just heard the words.

:D

I'm pretty sure professionals would be perfectly fine if they dust off the cheese grater design, and maybe make it space grey. They're less concerned about "oooo shiny" than consumers are.

That's all it really needs. No need to do a complete redesign. The vast majority who by a Mac Pro just want a functional, reliable and expandable machine. Looks come much further down the list than they would for a consumer product. If Apple would have released that I wouldn't be running on a PC now.

Apple gives zero ****s about the Pro market. No one needs five years to update a computer. Especially one made out of standard components you can buy from intel + nvidia/amd + samsung etc. Sorry.
So you’re a pro, and feel like Apple don’t give a **** about you.

I’m a consumer and Apple doesn’t give a **** about me.

Exactly who is their target market these days?

If I were Apple, i would just reuse the old cheese grater design, update some of the ports to Thunderbolt 3, color it space gray, and call it a day. People will be happy, and Apple just saved a ton of money. Let Ive design the next iPhone or something. :D
The old cheese grater towers were perfect for the customer base they served - easy for maintaining/upgrading internal parts, and well ventilated for efficient cooling. Apple should design Mac Pros in similar fashion to how servers have been designed for decades, with an eye toward high performance, efficient cooling, and easy maintenance. Providing socketed, rather than soldered, components such as RAM modules, CPU/GPU, and storage devices would be nice. Mac Pro users would be happy endorsing "ugly" server-like form factors as long as proper functionality ruled the day. One can always purchase high quality displays and other peripherals with "aesthetics" in mind.

For pros function should not follow form...

Yep. Same for the MacBook Pro. There is nobody editing photos and movies or creating websites and apps cordless. The weight and height of my 2012 non-retina MBP is perfect. Yes it’s twice as thick as the current ones and yes it is heavier but that doesn’t matter. It itsn’t too thick or heavy. The only reason I need a laptop is to quickly give a demo in another room or do some small things while abroad. 95% of the time my MBP is just attached to a screen on my desk. For pro work abroad you’ll need a huge battery. If I really would use my work’s 2017 MacBook Pro while abroad the battery is dead within 90 minutes.

(After Ives gets his hands on it... I know - too many buttons... whoops. And not 1, but 2 optical drives? What was I thinking.)

I'm waiting with great curiosity to see what Apple comes up with for the re-think on this product. It's good they've admitted the failings of the current model... though from what I've seen coming out of Apple, I don't expect this to actually be a straight forward "result!".

Man, that design sure didn’t age well. Will be interesting to see how Apple reimagines the new Mac Pro form factor, but I think we can safely say that we will never be seeing a rehash of the old tower design.
really? I saw it in store a few weeks ago and if you ask me the trashcan still looks great next to an iMac Pro.

I cannot wait for the new modular Mac Pro. It's the #1 product that I've been wanting for the last two years, more than any other electronic or non-electronic device. The next Apple event can't come soon enough!
here's a toast to inevitable disappointment

Kids who like different coloured phones and spend their entire lives on social media!?

We've been saying for years that Apple just needed to use the old Classic Mac Pro design and upgrade the internals...but there's a snowball's chance in hell that they're going to do that. They'll bugger up the design once again, of that I have no doubt.

Having had all three, I have to say i find the 2012 rMBP the sweetspot, it also had kickass cooling.
Typing on an old 2008 unibody 13", it's thick and heavy.

Mine works like that 99% of the time.
That's why i returned the faulty i9 and bought a Mini + a 13" when i sorely need to compute on the go - which is rarely.

Fat PC man (“I’m a Mac, I’m a PC”) must be laughing his balls off reading all this.

I own a trash can mac pro, got it as soon as it came out, it was priced fine back then. I love this machine, it still runs like new. But I do wish it had Nvidia option, I could just get an e-gpu I guess. I just wish apple would make a motherboard and let us build a computer with the parts we wanted. I would use the Chimera’s Mach One Case, and throw in a nice Ryzen. Would be sick. I really do hope they have a new machine that can keep up to date. Otherwise I am going to end up waiting another 5 years for the next iteration, since I have no plans to update in 2019.

Mobile phone users who don't like 3.5mm sound jacks, and who don't mind $1000 and up prices for phones with a risk of "No Service" issues sporadically arising. Apple is in the process of starving and overpricing Macs out of existence.

I don't think that's the case. Most people browse the internet and manage emails through an iPad. It's more convenient. Use of computers simply shifted back to "power users" like it was before the insurgence of mass media consumption, and we were doing fine...
Mass media consumption shifted to iPads and large-screen iPhones.

Absolutely NO WAY we will ever see another tower design like the cheese grater. Thunderbolt 3 or 4 is where upgradability is at.

I've been using the 2009 model for a while now, upgrading components as needed. It's been perfect. Can run the latest macOS. The 2013 model was a screwup.

I don't care if the regular tower is too "normal" for Apple. There's a reason everyone else makes them.

I will be happy and disappointed if they did that. Nothing prevented them to make it in 2017 or even 2016. We are now 5 years since Cant innovate my Ass.
