editing vertcal photography on a 24" 16:9 screen is almost like editing it in my 20 years old 21" 4:3 CRT Sony.

The advantage in 20 years in "tall" resolution is 0

Editing video is quite good though.
I'm a developer and work primarily with text. Two 4K screens allow me to have multiple windows side by side. Sometimes I turn one vertical. I need as many pixels as I can get, without sacrificing the vertical resolution.

I want a monitor with ProMotion, but can't even afford the Studio Display at these prices :D

There are many monitors with "promotion" on the market. You don't need to wait for Apple to give you this. There are many alternative.

Heck, there are even 4K mini-LED "promotion" monitors that you can buy right now if you want.

big displays useless but you have 2x24? Kinda like having one 48" almost?
If there was a reasonably priced panoramic display with 8000x3000 pixels sure it would do. Or one big 16:9 but with very high DPI. Otherwise I'll stick to the real estate the two current screens are providing.

XDR is not good for you? Its hiDPI, 32 and its almost the resolution you want. (price is high though I know)

Any chance these displays will fix the slow 40-60ms response time issues that plague the MBP14 / MBP16 lineup?

It'd be nice to get a 120hz apple external / laptop display with a fast enough response time that it... actually looked like 120hz. For reference competing high end mini LED displays almost all have <10ms response time and OLED displays (including iPhone OLED) are all <1ms response time.

Samsung sells mini-LED 144hz with ultra-low latency if you are looking for that.

Apple seems to be failing at every attempt to make a monitor for the majority of us, and I'm not really sure why.

- always ridiculously priced
- features we don't want (to pay for)
- smaller than most people want, or no larger option available
- single input (seriously?!)
- 120hz better, but people are buying 4K 165+hz screens in the PC world for a lot less money (albeit not mini LED)
- pathetic stands where you actually have to pay to get height adjust. That's a joke.

All I want really is an affordable Apple option - i.e. an iMac comparable screen @ 27" is fine @ 5K for retina, multiple inputs (DP 1.4+). No fancy OS, 120hz refresh, ideally 144 or higher, and a basic stand that you can height adjust. Price of this should be around $500-600 max. Doesnt have to be mini-LED or colour perfect , only as good as the iMac screen.

Not much to ask for really compared to the competition from LG/MSI/Samsung etc.

The manufacturer of Apple their displays is LG, and LG sells their old LG Ultrafine 5K for $1300. Let's be realistic here expecting Apple to sell a better LG display for only $500 - $600.

Just get a Dell Ultrafine or something like that if you only want to spend $500 - $600. I highly doubt you will notice the lower PPI after working on it for a while.

While I agree, Apple no doubt thinks it's brilliant. Talk about planned obsolescence! Now they can end-of-life it, not provide any software updates, and push customers to buy new monitors.

There's absolutely no reason a monitor needs an OS other than planned obsolescence. It makes the whole device more complicated, more expensive to fix, and therefore more likely to be replaced when something goes wrong.

At this point I assume everything is watching me. The privacy ship sank a long time ago. These days I roll my eyes when companies talk about privacy. There's no such thing in the digital world.
What kind of obsolescence do you expect to run into? If Apple ends updates, it will still work. You’re not expecting new features.

True. I question whether there will be issues with such monitors when the OS is no longer supported. Time will tell. I also think the addition of a processor and OS will make such monitors more expensive to repair. And what happens when the monitor dies after Apple stops updating the internal OS and/or the processor is no longer available? Plenty of people, myself included, are still using 10+ year old Thunderbolt or Cinema Displays. I’m not sure the same will be possible for a monitor with an OS. We shall see.

I have the dell 24" 16:10 always vertical for offimatic and webrowing, cant do those things in horizontal never again... maybe in a >32" screen

Seems like a significant number of posters here think a 27-inch monitor is too small. To each his/her own. In my case, I have a 27-inch monitor (NEC PA271W) and for me it's the right size. It's also a bit more than 10 years old (but still going strong) so I am very interested to see what Apple comes up with in the rumored new 27-inch monitor. Bigger would not be better for me given my work space and use cases. My wife has a 27-inch iMac (a few years old). She no longer likes it. Reason: monitor is too big. Wants a smaller monitor. So she's thinking of the 24-inch iMac or possibly the MacBook Air.

It costs nearly what I paid for the Mac Pro tower and I can't possibly justify this kind of money to myself, even though I'm typing this literally surrounded by $1k LEGO sets. I don't need any fancy refresh rates or color reproduction (basically working with green text on black background 90% of the time). Only need the space, high resolution and good design. So, waiting for the refreshed cheap Apple display, might even get the older edition once the price drops. Otherwise my two old Dells are working amazing for what I need.

Then you are in luck. The new 32" 6k Dell is here for you. Lets see the price but I think it will be at least 1/2 of XDR

I wonder how Apple will respond to the recent reveals of the new higher resolution monitros from Dell and Samsung?

At 32” and 6K the new Dell is aimed at the XDR. It probably will not be as bright and but might be priced more reasonably.

Then there is the Samsung ViewFinity S9. A 27” 5K display with a 4K camera.

Neither one has released prices yet, but it looks there is finally some interest in producing monitors with more than 4K resolution.

I paid £1700 for my top spec i5 iMac in 2019. That gorgeous 5k panel is without doubt the best screen I’ve used. Can Apple really be saying that the iMac guts only make up ~£300 of its value in comparison to a Studio Display? Either the SD is overpriced or the iMac was a bargain!
