I and others have posted this before, but the current Mac mini is BIGGER than the 14" MacBook Pro, yet the 14" MacBook Pro includes a battery, a screen, a keyboard, and a trackpad, among other things.

It says right in the article that is not the design.

That isn't going to happen... because it would be completely pointless.
It’s wishlist day on MacRumors when posts like these are published. Everything and the kitchen sink.

That’s the hard part for me as well. I have a monitor, but will that iMac also have a better one than I do now? If it’s a reasonable separation between what the Mini costs vs what I’d have to pay to upgrade the monitor, it may be the winner. But on the other hand, separating the two allows me to upgrade independently and on their own schedules.
And, as the dealbreaker has always been for the iMac for me, I can actually use the monitor for other devices; my Xbox, work laptop, The C64 etc. If Apple had added just one video input, they'd have had thousands (more) out of me over the years.

There is no way in hell they are going to let their cheapest product (the mini) that has always been a value product cannabinolize sales of their $3000-8000 high dollar premium pro product range.
Mac mini offers 10 Gigabit ethernet. If this were true, there would be no ethernet at all and just offer wifi only. Saving this comment for the 8th.

The Mac mini doesn't have a very expensive screen or battery and is also cheaper for AppleCare. No one who needs portability is debating a MBP vs the Mini.

i cant complain about my 2018 6 core i7 mm - most quiet desktop i ever owned - no issues so far - could use more usb and thunderbolt ports. however why aapl got rid of the user upgradable ram feature defies me

Yeah, great point. Another consideration for me is that I use my monitor for my work laptop as well. I’d even settle with an additional outlet spot being taken if it didn’t have power delivery back to it. I guess that kinda seals the deal for me when it’s time to upgrade.

Lithium battery requires service every few years. It can also bloat and damage internal parts of the Mini. I don't think Apple will ever do this.
I'm aware that lithium batteries don't last forever, but I imagine it could be done and made to last a good 10 years or more. It could even be a user-replaceable part if they were clever about it. Where there's a will, there's a way. Like you say, I'm not convinced Apple will ever do it either, but that's not to say it couldn't be done.

Backwards compatibility with the C64 should always be a primary concern! ??

Wait, wouldn’t it be a power cable? There’s no battery to charge, right? That makes a magnetic cable (which could pop out fairly easily) kind of pointless here doesn’t it? It’s not like the iMac, which requires such a design because of its absurdly thin profile.

Such a cable would make it more flexible since any suitable USB charger would work, and if it dies a replacement is easier to source. I doubt they do that, however.

There are companies that can anodize aluminum from a lot of different sources. Don't know how much it would cost, but it's doable.

Chrome paint - not the kind in a rattle can but water based ones. The a black die on the over coat to make it a black chrome color.

- It also voids the warranty

It would seem, unless the machine is physically damaged the warranty should be unaffected by a simple coating.

Maybe they will create a bevel-edge design that would fit nicely onto the back of a monitor, such that the user could put together their own iMac-like device using any old monitor. I could go for such a ZFP config.

You can already get VESA mounts to do that.

hell yes!

a Red Mac Mini would POP if done right and kinda perfect for Valentines Day present too! Make it a custom order like engraving if she’s number projections would be small, it’s still a sale.

Candy Apple Red with a chrome base and red overlay.
But you guys believe what you want. I’m sure apple is absolutely going to offer a product with the exact same performance at the $1000-2000 price point as it offers in the $4000-8000 price point. Obviously, that makes complete sense from a business standpoint and I’m sure customers looking for performance will absolutely decide to drop $6000 when the same performance can be had for $2000.

Maybe not exact same but overlap makes sense. They are appealing to two markets with a high end Mini and iMac that overlap in specs. Some people will want to use different monitors, need headless machines, or simply not willing to spend the money for an iMac. That is the Mini market. Others will want all in ones, like the iMac display and if to match it with a Mini brings the price close toan iMac so they go with the iMac.

A smart company looks at potential market segments and pursues ones that have the desired ROI. Sure, they may cannibalize some of their sales but if the overall result is higher revenue at desired margins that is OK.

- Those companies ask too much $ :(
- It also voids the warranty
- Not sure if It meets Apple standards quality, hmm.

Hah! Nothing would likely meet Apple's standards. Having scrapped a few hopelessly broken Mini's, prepping them to be anodized would involve a high degree of disembowelment with the potential that some of the functions would be lost. They really go overboard with building them to make them hard to repair/recolor, etc...

But still, it would be amazing to see a red Mini. A blue one would be pretty awesome too. I am seriously doubting that the next new Mini will have a see-through plastic top, or even a plastic top at all. Apple, lately, isn't one to show what the insides look like. I'd believe they would do colors before they would do a plastic top. A plastic topped Mini would remind me of the original Apple TV 'hobby project'. I don't think of that device int he strongest of positive feelings. It was big and weird.

Apple SHOULD do color Mini's. Definitely... Red(), blue, 'piano black', AWESOMENESS!!!

Can we have a Mac Mini in Product Red or Matte/Jet black, please. I really want my Mac Mini to stand out.
I custom paint my own Mac desktops including current M1 Mini. If you can handle a can of spray paint, proper ventilation, and drying time, you can go to town.

It's easy to do, fun, and if you do around warranty expiration, doesn't matter so much if you void it or not.

For a second I thought you were going to say 'black chrome'. For some reason, not a fan... *shrug* But I lived through the 'everything has to be green' in the 70's, and still have a problem looking at appliances and bathroom fixtures in green. ?

It would seem, unless the machine is physically damaged the warranty should be unaffected by a simple coating.

But you would have to disassemble the machine to do the anodizing, unless you just slapped some paint on the outside, and any entry into the sanctity of the hallowed space inside the box would be a major violation of cardinal law, and you forfeit the warranty. I wouldn't be surprised if just painting it would violate some clause somewhere. Apple also uses the case of some of their goodies as a heat sink, so any covering over that would effectively block or reduce the cooling potential, leading to an early death. My Intel Mini gets really hot quite a bit of the day when I'm using it. I had a thermometer in front of it, and it would jump 7 to 10 degrees from the heat coming out of the thing.

I hope they don't change the dimensions or size at all.

So many people have invested in those perfectly sized docks or rack mount solutions for Mac Mini.

Not sure what changing the form factor would do. It’s perfect as is.

And why would they move the Ethernet off into the power brick? The current M1 mini has 10GbE built in.

With the iMac it kind of makes sense, as you might want to reduce cable clutter. But with the mini, you already have cable clutter (speakers, webcam, keyboard, mouse, power, hdmi/monitor, Ethernet). Removing the Ethernet doesn’t do much.

Let's hope they combine AppleTV with Mac mini, no?
I would love this. My entertainment center currently consists of a DVR, DVD player, Mac Mini and Apple TV. If the Mini were capable of functioning as an Apple TV as well, that would appreciably cut down both on device and remote clutter.
