Here's the question: will the MacBook, Mac mini, iMac or Mac Studio connect with the ASUS ZenDrive V1M external CD/CD writer drive via the USB Type C interface?

My M1 Mac Studio works fine with this drive:

In related news, external floppy drives have been discontinued.
I still use mine occasionally to retro-computing stuff. I don't think the current MacOS can write to floppies though.

I have a superdrive that I inherited from my dad. Never really used it until recently when I started ripping CDs at the library. Works perfectly with my 2019 MBA.

The problem is Apple no longer supports this drive with modern versions of macOS.

The drive had a non-standard power draw that requires a special override from macOS. From what I have seen, the drive cannot be recognized by current Macs.
Snazzy Labs got it wrong in his video about it

Good enough for me. I think Apple should advertise this fact there are compatible third party optical drives that work with USB Type C port MacBook, iMac, Mac mini and Mac studio models.

Who has Blu-ray DVDs? To expensive still! 4K is even more expensive the H.D Blu-ray is! Will wait till the 4K Blu-Ray DVD players come down in price from $2,400.00 to like $500.00!

Oh no… 😱 shock horror 😵‍💫😵

this is the oldest Apple gadget I have! And it works great still. But if it stops working I’d have to stop buying cds.. (yes I still do!)

Are others in the market compatible?
Yes LOL any external optical drive will work. It’s not rocket surgery.

Still using mine after more than a decade, but mostly just when watching DVDs (public library here still carries them, for now).

Can’t recommend folks getting a new one now (unless you’re supporting legacy hardware for some reason). As others here have suggested, getting a USB-C BlueRay drive would make more sense these days.

When it comes to watching them on TV I use my Xbox Series X. Lets me play games which aren't on the Mac and also lets me watch DVDs/Blu-rays/4k Blu-rays. Well worth the cost.

I still use my original SuperDrive. As I get older the people around me pass away and their families ask me to create a memorial video or slideshow to play at the cremation/funeral service. It’s shocking how old tech so many undertakers are in the UK. 99% of the time they ask for it on DVD or nothing!

Still have one sitting on my iMac's pedestal. I use it every couple of months or so now, but it's served me well since 2013 and is still going strong.

I wouldn't recommend buying one anyways, eventually the discs started getting stuck and I had to disassemble it to get the disc out. It still works, though I have to hold the top down while ejecting because I couldn't get the case to snap back on right.

Shocked it took them this long to stop selling it. I use mine all the time to burn CDs for my vintage Apple collection.
