I still find myself digging the one at work out once or twice a year to get something off a disc (usually, somewhat ironically, to put an installer for some crusty piece of scientific software on a server so a Windows user can get to it).

But it's not really surprising, CD/DVD drives have not been of any practical use for the average computer user for quite a while, and it's not like it's hard to buy a Mac-compatible one if you do need it.

Not sure if this is still (or ever really true)?

Encountered an issue a long time ago, trying to install Windows on the Macbook Air. The Apple Superdrive was required for booting a Windows Install disk -- tried multiple generic USB CD/DVD drives and none would boot the Windows DVD and start the installer. Apple Store genius said needed the Superdrive, which then worked perfectly.

The problem is Apple no longer supports this drive with modern versions of macOS.

The drive had a non-standard power draw that requires a special override from macOS. From what I have seen, the drive cannot be recognized by current Macs.

?

I just plugged it into my M1 Pro Sonoma and it's fine.

I've always contemplated whether I should get one just because, but in practice I never really needed it. Maybe I'll grab one of the last stock units at a local  Authorized Reseller just for the sake of nostalgia. Or maybe I should get a few of them and resell them for 20ish % markup. Hmmm.
For $79 you can get a third-party external blu-ray burner, and have enough left to grab some groceries afterwards.

I still have mine
Have not used it in years
Yet something about physical CD DVD attracts me to them
Wish I kept my old physical media collection
Was hoping they would become cool again
Vinyl is cool again. It’s fun because it’s analog, yet good. I don’t see any real resurgence of physical digital media, other than a fun thing to play with to get old movies for half a buck each.

Oh no… 😱 shock horror 😵‍💫😵

this is the oldest Apple gadget I have! And it works great still. But if it stops working I’d have to stop buying cds.. (yes I still do!)

Are others in the market compatible?
Yes. This is a non-issue.

Good. Just a warning for anyone who wanted one of these, you can’t even use them with an Apple Silicon Mac.
They just don’t work.
It works for me on silicon based Mac.

Can you demonstrate otherwise?

Since they are dropping the SuperDrive, Apple, can you please also remove support for third party alternative drives as well? Just as you do with other stuff….

Not expecting to see it coming back to the store. Though not used frequently nowadays, it would have been good if it was still sold.

Have one somewhere, but it isn't used very often.
Can't actually recall last time when it was used.
But I thought of it not that long time ago, but it stayed as a thought 😌

I should probably buy a backup. I am on my second, after wearing out the first one, ripping several thousand CDs. :D

Just throwing this out there so anyone who wasn’t aware can familiarize themselves with it.

There is a well-accepted CD ripping software in the Windows world, EAC, and then there is the Mac “equivalent” called XLD.
(I don’t know if it runs on modern Apple silicon Macs? Maybe someone can confirm?)

Do yourself a favor and rip your CD collection to FLAC+.cue

Been wanting one for years but never pulled the trigger. Had it in my saved for later on Amazon. Looked today and Amazon's delivery estimate is now gone but still says "in stock" I went ahead and ordered one from Best Buy with a 2 day free delivery.

No I don't NEED it. But with a physical collection of 2000+ cds I thought I should have it incase something happens to my already uploaded iTunes versions. Yes I could get an off-brand cheaper but I like to stick with Apple as I don't want to deal with any function issues. The Superdrive should work perfectly with the Mac Studio as it still has the USB A inputs.

I may be just paranoid but I do think these will be completely sold out everywhere within a month and very hard to get under $100 if at all available even used.

Update 8/8/24 - Amazon is now sold out and only has used available.

DVD was SO AWESOME when it came out. Who would watch a movie on VHS? Then Blu Ray came out and made DVD look like VHS. Now we have 4K streaming.
I bought Bugsy Malone from Apple's TV Store, because I thought I'd lost the DVD, but I found it later and I ripped it. The quality of the sound and picture is SO MUCH better on the ripped version.
The night-time scenes are completely dark in the shadows on the Store copy.

I had to take a photo because you can't screenshot the DRMed version. The iPhone has actually made the Store version look better than it is.

Why are so many giving your post a "disagree" rating? Is it untrue or they don't like anything negative said about apple?
People “disagree” with his post since his assertion that the Apple SuperDrive doesn’t work with Apple Silicon, it’s blatantly false. And I think disagreeing with a falsehood is a totally appropriate response.
