Why can't a trillion dollar company just have the store changeover after the announcement?
Does the 'hype' of having the store go down outweigh all the lost orders today?
Frankly, yes, I think it probably does. They didn’t become a trillion dollar company by not mastering the hype game. Everything they do is very deliberate and calculated. How many sales do you think they really lose, anyway? If someone was about to drop a couple of grand on a new MacBook Pro or something, do you think they’re going to say, “oh, the store is down for a few hours. Guess I’ll buy a Surface Pro instead.”? Anyone who was serious about making a purchase isn’t going to change their mind because the site is down for a few hours, but it does serve as a reminder or notification that something big is going on. It’s psych/marketing 101. People love the feeling of waiting for a locked door to open and knowing that something special is happening behind it. This is the online version of that.
