Incredible arrogance in this thread. Armchair comments saying he’s doing a terrible job running an enormous successful store used by millions and millions of people. And jumping to wild conclusions like “he doesn’t trust co-workers” without having a clue of what his day-to-day looks like. Of course I wouldn’t work 80h a week, but I find it incredibly arrogant to dismiss that job as “easy”, “I would work 40h and delegate”, etc.

I guess we are to have sympathy for Phil since he works 80 hours and not 40 like everyone else?

heck most people are stuck with part time jobs. the overtime pay he makes working 80 hours has to be HUGE.

Old people think shlt like this is cool. 80 hours pr week is 16 hours pr day, if he doesn't work weekends.

6.00 Get up, brush teeth, breakfast, go to work
7.00 Day starts, work 5 hours
12.00 30 minutes lunch
12.30 works 6 hours, total 11
18.30 quick dinner, 30 minutes
19.00 works for additional 5 hours, total 16 hours
24.00 Returns home, brushes teeth, kisses wife
01.00 Sleeps 5 hours

Not buying it.
I’m sure he work on weekends 4-6 hours per day

30% commission to sell an app in the Apple App Store, and a 30% commission for anything sold inside that app?

Ridiculous.

More fool him, he should learn to delegate more and show trust in others. You should work to live, not live to work, unfortunately America's work culture is broken when it comes to work/life balance, a lack of paid annual leave, paid sickness leave, paid maternity/paternity leave, general vacation days etc.

Dude is worth $93 million. Doesn't ever need to work again. He's working 80 hours a week because he wants to. I don't feel sorry for him.

Let's face it, 80hrs a week for him is very different than 80hrs a week for most of us. He isn't fitting in a school run, household chores, planning a vacation, going shopping, or any of the other million things that take up time - unless he wants to.

He is also doing a very different kind of work than most of us.

Dinner and drinks with Eddie? That's working.

Sunday afternoon BBQ with Tim? That's working.

Lunch with a dev team? That's working.

Round of golf with major shareholders? That's working.

Meetings related to being a college trustee? That's working.

Dude is probably counting reading emails and IMs.

Yeah if I counted every Slack DM and email I read and respond too I could probably say I work 80 hours a week too.

"in 2020 to take a step back from Apple and spend more time on personal projects and friends, he is reportedly working close to 80 hours a week."

How many hours was he working before ?!
I think they mean he took a step back in 2020, but now in 2024 is working 80 hours a week, tow that back in 2020 he stepped back to do 80 hours. A typically 9-5 job monday-friday would be a standard 40 hour work week, so he's doing double that, when his current 2020 transition was probably meant more to be say say half a normal work week or such.

It is always easier to criticize others than to critique ourselves, even though we barely know about the others...

I’m an entrepreneur and I work roughly 80 hours a weeks. I’m well compensated but I am exhausted constantly. I can’t shut my brain off. It’s been 3 years like this. Sure I love the money and my family lives well but no way I can do this forever.

Is he wealthy enough to retire? If so, then it's truly his decision if not outright desire. There's no martyrdom going on here.

There are a lot of people that work 80 hours a week—nurses, doctors, small business owners, lawyers, engineers, etc.
Thanks for that. I was wondering what all the fuss about a long work week is. When I started my company in the late 80’s I easily worked those amount of hours. Sometimes more. I was very fortunate to land some huge contracts and work for some of the biggest companies on the planet. But more importanty….I loved what I was doing with a passion. It wasnt work …it was joy. I did those hours for many years and it really wasn’t a big thing. I can assure you I wasn’t making anywhere near the coin he is. So this fluff piece is just so crass and insulting to the millions of people who work long hours whether they want to or have to. This just reinforces my feelings about the WSJ and newspapers in general. 🤮

My exact thoughts. Also, being accessible via email is probably considered work, which most of us do anyways. In reality most work more than the standard 40 hours.

Tim Cook shouldn't let any of his staff work more than 50 hours. It's on him to make sure they don't feel obliged to work hours that are inhumane, and should actively forbid it.
Don't worry, he doesn't work 80 hour weeks. People grossly over-estimate how much they work, especially in positions like this where they are trying to justify making $50k+ a day when their coworkers are making $300-600.

Its all part off the justification argument that says "no one else would do this, so I should get paid this much". The reality is many of us work this much and will never get the accolades or pay he does. But it also doesn't make it a good thing either.

Executives at a large global company are effectively working 24/7. Early morning/late night meetings to deal with timezones, travel, and weekends are the norm. Counting hours are irrelevant. They fit work into their daily life. Work life and personal life just become intertwined so it doesn't feel like work. I respond to emails on the weekend to get deals done and have early/late meetings because of timezones all the time. It's just the nature of a global business.

Stating he works 80hrs a week is the author of the article trying to make us members be in awe of him due to the amount of work he puts into the app store? I for one am not. There are many job professions out there where people put in the same amount of hours or more who I am in awe of, hospital workers, emergency rescue workers, social care workers, emergency service workers and none of them gets paid not even 0.5% of what Phil Shiller is paid at Apple.
