Not just costs. Since Ive left we got practical designs again. All the form over function designs Ive made that crippled so many products finally got reversed and they're now better than ever (except the mouse. For some reason they haven't reverted that one yet.)

Plus we're getting cheaper machines as a result. Hope we get some more cheaper Macs because of this, and maybe a monitor that isn't absurdly overpriced lmao.

I disagree, I think my iPod Nano 3rd gen and iPhone 4 were some of the best industrial designed products I've ever had.
However I don't know who designed the current iPad Pro chassis but I am also stunned with that too, but it's very bendable from what I've seen so you can see where the cost cutting is.

This is what happens when you have a glorified accountant as a ceo
Is he good with calculation? Can we rest assured our money is safe?

It probably does but most of that can be blamed on the currency exchange rate (stronger USD, weaker euro), not Apple.

Funny how when it comes to the rest of the world it's the currency rate, but when it comes to the US it's inflation, no it is inflation pushing prices up and greed in some areas, like Apples services.

I've designed the antenna band, but the testing team said it worked; even Steve Jobs approved the 4's antennas. The fact that the 4S kept the the same antenna design but the engineers shifted the antenna gaps means that his antenna design was sound.

While Ive might have decided on the 5's colors, he didn't design the physical coating materials and the hardware testers approved its durability.
Or the hardware testers complained that the coating wasn't holding up and the color didn't retain it's appearance very well in durability testing and Ive/Steve made an executive level decision to just ship it anyway. Because, that's very much a thing that happens in hardware development. Same thing could have happened with the antenna (though that's less likely).

I'd love to track down a validation tester from Apple during those years and hear their take on what happened there.

Even before Ive left, the report claims that Apple's operations department had started to gain more influence over the design team, resulting in an increased "focus on costs" rather than "purely on look and features."
That’s a shame, it should ideally be all three are goals for any product, not having cost restrictions interfere.

They will . I mean, they can . People will buy anyway . They know it .

1479€ for an iPhone 14 pro max in Europe really hurts

And im repeating myself once again, the new MacBook Pro m2 pros Will also see a 400-500€ price increase , be prepared
then there's no point in cost cutting measures when they can just increase prices even more to make up for lack of cost cutting measures.

The iPhone 6 clear to the epitome of iPhone design: the iPhone X.

The square-edged iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 was very different in design and a much smaller device. And Ive’s team could not yet get the design they really wanted, which was the fully rounded, symmetric body of the iPhone 6, on.

Yeah I just don't think there is a "right" answer. They have been alternating designs since the beginning. Rounded with the first few, then squared, then back to rounded, then back to squared. Ive's team has gone back and forth.

But I totally get which ones were your favorite :)

Profit over function would have required a new Pencil, other its a USB-C Pencil 1 or new Pencil 3. This wouldn't be an issue if USB-C weren't being mandated on everything.
Except Apple Pencil 2 requires hardware built into the iPad and that would have increased the build cost of the iPad and that would have been passed down to the consumer closing the already tight gap with the iPad Air. This way, Apple makes at least $10 and gets rid of Apple Pencil 1 stock. I also don't think the iPad falls under any mandates but I could be wrong on that.

Exactly, you would have to ignore at least a week of notifications, and simply refuse to charge the mouse while you aren't using it, for the bottom port to be an issue. Hell, you can even plug it in and get a cup of coffee to get enough charge for your day; then charge it that night.

Perhaps a better way of saying it is that the Magic Mouse is not bad, it's just bad for procrastinators.
Speaking as a procrastinator the real issue with the Magic Mouse is the ergonomics. Personally the charging port was just insult to (very literal) injury. I will say though that in full-time use my experience was that it had to be charged about every other week, as opposed to my current mouse, which is more like every 6-8 months.

Worth noting I'm not sitting at my desk as much now as I was when I was on a Magic Mouse. Past me probably would have had to recharge at least twice as often as current me. Still, every 3 months is a solid improvement, and the fact I can still use the mouse while I charge is nice, though certainly it's just the cherry on top of the not-having-to-worry-about-RSI sundae.

Inflation is a problem across the globe. My point was that the higher prices for things like iPhones in Europe was due to the exchange rate (stronger USD, weaker euro), not so much Apple or inflation.

They have a large design team, yet they come out with basically the same products year after year and take no chances on anything.

It's just kind of funny.
They come up with hundreds if not thousands of different designs. There are plenty stuff that never make it pass the concept art phase, let alone the prototyping phase. Y'all can do a search for Apple prototype designs and see quite wild concepts.

The bean counter green light the same design over and over is all.😐

The iPhone 4 for Verizon and later iPhone 4S had 4 antenna breaks instead of the original 3. They didn’t just shift the breaks. Technically, that’s not the same design per se. That was a revision of that antenna design.

Yeah, not having to build the inductive charging rail onto the iPad was probably the main driver behind using the Pencil 1. If they wanted to maintain community goodwill, though, they would have rev'd the Pencil 1 to have a USB-C port on it, or at the very least included the stupid adapter in the box with the iPad. I like Apple's general trends in design recently, but holy cow do they still put out some nonsense every now and then. 😂

Funny... I expected a couple of juvenile whines in response. Not disappointed with that epic burn.

Yes...focus on things that are mice-nuts rather than big-picture achievements, such as Apple Silicon that has propelled Apple into the future with outstanding CPU/GPU performance and not being beholden to Intel's lackluster CPUs (and high power dissipation) going into the future.

But yes...adapters.
I am more focused on the design innovation than performance as I though that was the purpose of this article. I agree that Apple is in fact innovating when it comes to Apple Silicon performance.

Would honestly rather have Apple spike and basic needs prices stop spiraling out of control

Inflation is a problem across the globe. My point was that the higher prices for things like iPhones in Europe was due to the exchange rate (stronger USD, weaker euro), not so much Apple or inflation.
And so why did Apple increase prices across all its services in the US then? Because it had nothing to do with currency rates.. what's your excuse for that? Considering they made an extra 10 billion in profits over 2021 across its services.

You’re confusing engineering issues with design.

Please go think different as the Apple slogan when Apple was a great company went.
Engineering and design go hand in hand - engineering determines whether or not a design is feasible, and indeed Apple has often used clever engineering as a feature of its design (ie: MagSafe).

The thin design of the iPhone 6 did not support the engineering capabilities of the time, hence why it had issues with bending, same with the 2018 iPad Pros.

The thin design of the 2016-2019 15/16" MBP was not conducive to the thermal demands of an Intel H-series chip but Apple proceeded to use the design anyway and let users deal with throttling, fan noise, and heat.

Not necessarily.
Higher costs means that the costs will most likely be passed down to the consumers, which is what many companies do, Apple is no exception.
With Apple, it also tries to keep (profit) margins high, for itself and for its shareholders.
People tend to forget that Apple is a publicly traded company and has to look out for its shareholders. It's all about profits.
correct. Exactly my point: if Apple didn’t focus on lowering costs, our iPhones would be more expensive than they are now.

lets be honest, the design of the product hasn't been rocket science for years now. That said whoever designed the colour of the dark back and pastel from iMac should never design anything again. That pastel is so ugly.

Right. Keyboards that don’t type, phones that bend, faulty coatings, overheating video cards, poorly designed antennas, miserable screens, and on.

Maybe design was at the expense of quality in many products. IMO, quality has improved, so there is at least some balance at this point. It will be interesting to see future new and redesigned products in this context.

For now, I’m happy with the changes they’ve made resulting in tangible improvements to quality and usability.

Know what happens with profits first companies? Enron and Bernie Madoff come to mind. You have to take care of your customers with your services. Evidently Apple customers see the value of the services and the price they pay for those services.
