...or... "Once I lost all my photos after my iPad got stolen, and somebody told me I should have been backing it up somehow, I vowed never to trust computers again"

That statement could be made about any laptop, Cell phone or digital camera. Losing data that was not backed up is not unique to the iPad.

My 64 gig is the best of all, because it has 3G! :) It's not in Anchorage with the others, though. It's not anywhere really, except my imagination. One more month to go. Arrgh! Okay, okay, calm down; gotta find my blood pressure pills.

Yours is just a cold, hard slab of aluminum waiting its turn for now.

Closely guarded

So, an airplane crashed into a Fed-Ex warehouse today and my first thought:
"I hope there weren't any iPads in there."

And yet here you are.... on the Hype site.

Well believe it or not, way back in the day (about 3-4 months ago) this site used to report on things other than just the ipad. Not everybody who comes to macrumors is having a mental orgasm over this overhyped, crippled netbook.

Your signature cracked me up...

No flash means thousands of frustrated in the buyers demographic.

Perhaps that should be: Great iPads have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.

Give me a break. This isn't even a new product, it's just a larger iPhone. There's something insulting about treating it like it's something revolutionary when it's really so unimaginative.

Now, if it ran a touch version of Mac OS X that let you install all your normal Mac programs, and it had the ports of a normal tablet, this kind of hype and security would be appropriate.

And the thing revolutionary about a tablet with OSX with ports would be what exactly? I suppose just that it runs OSX. Tablets (with full ports and full desktop OS's) have been around a long time and don't appear to be revolutionary nor particularly big sellers.

But their own store employees? What, is one of the "Geniuses" going to get a peek at the new product, take a picture or snatch one, and suddenly Dell or Motorola's going to have a functioning knockoff ready in 2 days?

No but if you were a disgruntled employee that got passed up for a full time slot and/or pay raise or whatever you might tip off some friends to the presence of great new stock in the back room and how to get in and out and that there's little security. It's possible that the units won't deliver until Friday night. And demo units for employees to train on would require some pretty major measures to make sure one doesn't walk out tucked into someone's shorts to go on ebay for a huge payday.

that is the one concern that I think was a mistake not to consider. some folks might being using their ipads on the road. or got one for grandma who doesn't have a computer etc. so there's a potential for a lot of data that isn't getting backed up. What would have been the harm in some kind of back up mode where you could attach a hard drive and have your ipad data cloned, even in a capsule form like time machine does so that you aren't having to repurchase tons of music etc.

Well thats funny because I work for Apple Care and we've already had training and we've known about internal things for months.

And it works for him, doesn't it?

Pragmatically, he does use focus groups. All of these recent products have been proceeded by other implementors. Of late Apple is the 3rd, 4th, 5th vendor to get to a product segment and try it out. Don't believe they hype that Apple doesn't skim off other folks blunders and good ideas to get to their initial version.

It isn't focus groups in the classic set, but in pragmatic purpose... yes. The primary difference is who creates the "prototypes" the users are commenting one. That Apple does it with zero feedback ... poppycock.

Perhaps the clueless corp executives who really have no idea what the product is about or a notion of what is good or bad get their panties in a twist. If you are waiting for someone else to do your homework for you ("please tell me the answer" ) then yeah. However, that really isn't what focus groups are most effective at.

Additionally, at this point Apple has a large self-selected set of customers. Don't have to do focus groups as much since have culled the more like minded folks from the rest of the market. Many of the other folks with largely alternative preference ordering are off doing other things. Lady Gaga's super fans thinks she is brilliant. Other folks think she is a tad strange.

And sometimes Jobs (and Apple ) is just lucky.

Who doesn't know that Apple stores are going to have a giant stack of iPads for sale on Sat morning ? Since they will be available at 9:00 a.m ( again readily availbe on the net). Most likely they will be there by late Friday.

Cloning an iPad is going to take some time. If not hooked to a power source will drain off battery while doing backup. Even worse if someone plugs in one of those USB power lightweight travel drives. Now the drive & the iPad are draining the battery to get the back up done. That's OK if the battery is full but if low ...

In the normal backup mode that Apple is herding folks into the iPad gets power from the computer and presumably its battery is in better shape than the iPad. ( not necessarily true if using almost dead battery laptop and no external power. )

However, do agree in that if iTunes sync is only really utilized as a "back up" program, why not just drop the pretense and run a back-up program from the iPad (probably best done with it plugged into a power source.)

It's always great to read the depths Apple will go to secure a product before it's launch.

Other companies, BIG or small should take a page or two from Apple.

Apple clearly understands that people love to spoil things intentionally or un-intentionally, so they take the neccessary steps to insure their products aren't unvailed before it's scheduled release date.

PS: Apple Retail Store employees gossip .... ALOT!
So Apple taking this level of security seems normal.

If not for all the mystery and secrecy, a device could hardly be 'magical'

I for one, love their approach — it gives them two birds in one stone (1) unparalleled speculation/rumor and (2) temporary product protection from copycats/cloners. Of course, they can afford to take this approach because of their unshakeable belief in their capacity to deliver — if not for that, all the mystery would badly backfire, in addition to being unjustifiably expensive.

I agree this is marketing genius. There is nothing "paranoid" about Apple. You don't rise from the ashes in 10 years with astounding technical products by being paranoid. You do it because you're smart, cunning, hardworking, dedicated and very clever at marketing yourself. It's a tactic as old as the hills.
Look at us! We're all here talking about it, pro or con. As so is the rest of the world, media included. I didn't see the same sort of interest, or hype, with the Nissan Leaf. What's a Nissan Leaf, you ask? If you have to ask, I've proved my point. ;)

Well thats funny because I used to work for Apple Care and we've already had training and we've known about internal things for months.

Fixed that for ya.

And I agree with others... They scoff at the security measures, but you already have an employee blabbing to the media, despite. Just imagine how many idiots would be running off at the mouth if they didn't take the secrecy so seriously.

I've really spent a lot of time looking at every picture I could of the iPad, and darn, I think I see yellow tinging on the screen:)

True, back then it was all about iPods. ;)

The people who are working at the warehouses are actually being picked up by Apple security services at the place of work, put on blindfolds and driven to a special secure facility to pick up the boxes prior to distribution.

That would be area 51. The iPads are being delivered by "ship":D in the dead of night. Oooraaah.

Hey, the iPad is a Star Trek-like device. Maybe Scotty is beaming them down directly to the warehouse instead of sending tribbles to Klingon engine rooms.
