It's always great to read the depths Apple will go to secure a product before it's launch.

Other companies, BIG or small should take a page or two from Apple.

Apple clearly understands that people love to spoil things intentionally or un-intentionally, so they take the neccessary steps to insure their products aren't unvailed before it's scheduled release date.

PS: Apple Retail Store employees gossip .... ALOT!
So Apple taking this level of security seems normal.

Do the staff gossip because of the of secrecy or the other way around?
Or is it the gossip that drives it. People do love to talk so you want to make sure they are talking about the good stuff.

I think Apple use the drama of secrecy with staff and customers alike to build the brand. It works for them so why not.
When it stops working they'll switch to being open, maybe only selectively. Again then lots of people will buy in further to the new "Open Apple Way".

Well believe it or not, way back in the day (about 3-4 months ago) this site used to report on things other than just the ipad. .

and back in the day, folks didn't click on a link that was clearly about something they didn't care about

Who doesn't know that Apple stores are going to have a giant stack of iPads for sale on Sat morning ? Since they will be available at 9:00 a.m ( again readily availbe on the net). Most likely they will be there by late Friday.

or they have been there since yesterday. this is the kind of information that Apple wouldn't want getting out to anyone, including employees that might pull some kind of stunt.

Cloning an iPad is going to take some time.

64 GB isn't going to take days and days. handful of hours so you plug it in before bed and it's done when you wake up. No real big

If not hooked to a power source will drain off battery while doing backup.

so you program it to detect if it's plugged in and if not, it won't start. They have that caution check on laptops for software updates so I'm sure they could figure out how to put it into the iphone OS

It's having that option, or rather not having it, that I think is a mistake.

Mine to for some reason..

don't be so sure about that. UPS could be changing up the info for security reasons. Last thing they need is for someone to clue in that they got the units yesterday and rob the hub. and since folks are going around on boards like this giving out details of where their stuff allegedly is ...

What would you have had seen the phone sooner done in your ability to swipe credit cards and hand boxes to the hundred people outside the store drooling to hand you money?

In other words, short of your own personal curiosity, how would have seeing it a week earlier had helped you do your job better on launch day?

You've obviously never worked in retail, because you'd be a terrible salesman. Why train staff at all? All they do is swipe cards and hand over boxes right? They don't need to know anything about what they are selling ;)

I don't care about the other rich cool kids drooling outside with cash in hand ready to throw at the Apple store. I care about knowledgeable salesmen who actually used the product and are honest with me about the feel of the product, you know, something that you can never ascertain by just looking at a photo of it on the internet. I care that they've actually used it and tell me honestly if they would recommend it to someone like me with my particular needs. That is not going to be fulfilled by a guy who first landed his eyes on the product 1 hour ago and did not actually have a chance to touch it/play around with it.

If I was an Apple salesman, i would want to touch and play with it beforehand to know what it's like and so i don't have to make up answers to questions about whether the interface is smooth and is it quick or not. Obviously you're not too worried about these kinds of things.
