....The scratch is in the coating. It’s not as bad as if I’d scraped down to raw steel but it’s still a clear blemish. My daughter is cool with it all. We’re curious to see if the coating self-heals to some degree over time. I was able to take a soft cloth and smooth it over a little.....
It might just be the residue of the case that may be removable. Try gently with a fingernail and a little water and soft cloth.

Unfortunately it is a scratch. The case manufacturer did handle everything very well, though so I don’t blame them. I’m sending back my 12 Pro. If my daughter likes the display on mine better she can have mine and I’ll send hers back. But mine has the close up focus problem. That’s not why I’m returning it, though, since I think that’s a software fix. I can’t handle the weight of the Pro phones anymore. My mom has both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis so maybe I have the beginnings of arthritis. All I know is my hands hurt and I was keenly reminded why I was using my SE more than my 11 Pro the last couple of months. I’m going to go with a regular 12 or a mini.

Hello everyone! I just opened it and I found this little problem on the rear glass! What do you think I should do? Everything else is perfect! Thank you.

I'd definitely ignore it. Else you'll end up with screen lotto or scratches in other places. I find it sad that I'm excusing things like this but I truthfully rarely have a completely perfect iPhone like my 7 Plus. Probably why I stayed with it (5s dead pixels, 6 bent, 6s had reception issues, returned an XS) until the 11 Pro Max which needed color filters applied to look good to me.

From how I have seen the other posts I think it is almost unlikely to find a perfect iphone 12 pro! What do you say?

Well, my heart almost stopped when the Apple Store told me I couldn’t return my iPhone 12 Pro graphite.

Now a different specialist and that same supervisor are saying that I wasn’t allowed a screen protector install when I got my replacement graphite, but they never said that?

If that was the case, I wouldn’t have taken a train at all to risk that. upsetting a supervisor can just change their stance and story.

a good thing the other Apple Store wrote me a note so nothing can be changed. But I’m going to just return the graphite iPhone later today, I just don’t really trust they’ll honour it after that phone call.

and apparently their screen protector installer is a “company known issue”, that’s what they told me over the phone. Not sure how valid that is, unless they’re referring to just that store specifically. 🤷🏻

I can’t believe they think it’s okay for me to keep a scratched iPhone that Apple’s own tools caused.

Interesting. Would like to know more about this "company known issue" and how they plan on addressing it.

I just returned the graphite iPhone. I’m disappointed that they’re still installing screen protectors, apparently they disclose the scratching now.

Awkwardly enough, the specialist I was with heard/seen this thread or on Reddit. People know.

I feel like my city should know about this, I feel bad for the people who unknowingly have scratches on their stainless steel. haha 😅

Wow seriously? Who would get their screen protector installed on their brand new phone after that disclaimer? I hope no one!

You did the right thing by making them aware of this problem. No one should have their brand new phones scratched by someone else.

Well I said I wouldn’t but, I did swap for another. New phone is perfect ... took it to BB and bought a Zagg that they installed, and, phew still scratch free!

The Zagg has this tiny little frame that barely rests on the top half of the frame of the phone. $24 for Zagg

After 9 pages of reading, so many thoughts. So much confusion. Not sure where to start.
Well, I’d say if you’re getting the pro inspect it out of the box. Roll the dice on whether or not to let Apple install a screen protector; if you elect to and it’s scratched just ask for a refund, and, buy another (don’t bother with trying to exchange its a hassle - if you just return it without making a fuss Apple will go above and beyond) ... or install it yourself or maybe choose like Bestbuy or a carrier to put it on 👍

There are a few brands now where they come with a jig template to apply a screen protector. It’s completely foolproof and nobody needs to pay someone else to do it. It takes seconds and doesn’t damage the phone and costs £10 or less.

The OP clearly has an obsessive personality but also seems to have had an unlucky experience. I had my 12 pro screen protector installed at the apple store with no issues. I am on the iUp program so minor scratches arnt an issue since the phone isnt really mine anyway and i will get a new one next year and case it till then. There is no perfect iphone.

Yeah that's a pretty solid summation. I am still on the fence this year but am starting to get the "itch" for the first time since picking up my 8+ on launch day. The screen protection I had installed the day I got it is still on there, the lady who installed it at the Verizon store did it by hand. I have installed other screen protection by hand with no problems. If I bite the bullet it will be done by me or by a store employee by hand.

I'd like to think that Apple might have tested this when developing the phones or at least have had Belkin test the install process before offering it. Either they did and didn't receive these results or brushed it off. Who knows, your guess is as good as mine because that ship sailed. On that note I applaud the OP for reporting it and for getting a new device to replace it. I definitely agree it should have been replaced so good on Apple for doing that. If that happened to me the first time, I'd have never have let someone do that by machine the second time and that's where the confusion sets in. I understand the OP has a shaky hand and is unable to do it, so there's that. Pretty sure there are other options though to have screen protection done. Whatever the case it's good to get this out there so others are aware of what might happen.

I agree with a few of the comments. No need to obsess with minor imperfections--unless it impacts performance, that said out of the box, a phone or a car or whatever, should be as close to perfect as possible. Wear caused during ownership is one thing--that's life. Out of the box, brand new, whatever it is, I'm expecting as close to perfect as possible. Apple made it right in this case and that's a good thing. Same way as when my auto dealership scratched paint on my vehicle, they fixed it, no cost to me and provided me with a rental.

How much does Apple charge for a screen protector and this service btw? I bought a double tempered glass pack from Spigen and a foolproof template for a tenner and it doesn’t damage the phone.
Short answer is, they charge way too much. I do the same as you, I can get a 3 or 4 pack with the install tray for under $10 USD on Amazon. It's a no-brainer, IMO.
