Apple will be webcasting their 3rd Quarter 2008 Financial Results on July 21, 2008. The 3rd fiscal quarter encompasses sales between April 1, 2008 and June 30, 2008. As such, results from the iPhone 3G and App Store sales will not be included in the earnings report.

Recent reports however, have suggested that Apple's U.S. marketshare continues to increase substantially with 30-40% gains year-over-year.

While the iPhone 3G has been well received, most reviewers appear most impressed with the App Store and the variety of applications that are available. As David Pogue describes:
The App Store–oh, man, the App Store. It’s a candy store, dude. It’s 550 free or cheap add-on programs that make the iPhone (or the iPod Touch) do absolutely amazing things…stunts a cellphone has no right to perform.
Impressive apps such as Pandora Radio, BeatMaker, a VNC client and a Role Playing Game have certainly raised the bar for future apps.

I wish they would have had more iPhones in all the countries. They really could have brought in record profits. People will just get another iPhone clone from another company and they lose the sale.

Final Fantasy

Square Soft needs to get all up in this App store, and make me Final Fantasy Tactics for the iPhone.

We also need to get some emulators in here, Nintendo, Gamegear, Gameboy, etc.
The emulators are legal, ROMs are illegal, right? (heck I'd pay $3-5 for good old classics)
There should be a separate area of the App store for eBooks too.

David Pogue is such a douche.

Grow up.

The App store is made for iTunes. I don't think Knock-off phones would work on the store and part of what makes it great is that everything is in one place. I don't think phone makers will be able to mirror the store with their own.

It's good to see him getting a kicking in that article's comments for completely failing to mention Handango.

That would be the shop which sells apps for all smartphones and which has for years now.

More to the point, the Applications are Cocoa applications. They require Apple's objc runtime and OS to run. People can go out and spend the time to develop these clone apps all they want.

Or they can sign-up for the iPhone dev program and see millions of their application run daily whether free or otherwise.

They could already do this for years with Windows Mobile and yet it's quite clear that Apple's frameworks, eye for end-to-end solution and market growth is driving developers to use their tools to make money.

the thing abut the last quarter is that there will be hardly any iphone sales. It was run out in the first four or five weeks, after which there would be almost zero sales. Revenue on the other hand, will be maintained for iphones because of the way Apple accounts for it. Overall though, except for stellar mac sales, last quarter will headline pretty ordinary. This quarter, on the other hand......

The App Store ... is the KILLER App!

Raises the iPhone to a whole new level.

Integrating iTunes (and all it contains) as an essential part of iPods, Iphones was a marketing stroke of genius!

I dislike it when people start quoting David Pogue regarding Apple products and services. He has a valid opinion, but he's a fanboy.

Lets just ask what Steve Jobs thinks of the iPhone and app store? "It's the best thing evarrr!"

I totally agree! It's no longer just a phone, it's an integrated solution reaching into the broad base of iTunes users, (dot).Mac users, and all PC & Mac users to creat something totally new and much more useful than the sum of the parts.

That it can even function as an appliance control device is a total hoot!

Hold onto your hats...this is only 2.0...I see the iPhone morphing communications in unexpected ways and directions.

David Pogue haters -- until today, I didn't even know the species existed.

I didn't know they existed either.

What's to hate about David Pogue? The guy has contributed a lot to the Apple community, written some of the best mac help books, and is an entertaining read.
