Funny thing is, "gratis" means "free" in norwegian. Would this mean we norwegians get apps for free?:D

Not really funny. That was the point of AppGratis. Free app promotions.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of appgratis and use it every day... don't even have the app installed, never have. I just read the emails they send out daily and see if there's anything that interests me, and use the link provided which takes me straight to the app store. The service doesn't need its own app.

Seems to me it's much ado about nothing....except AppGratis wants the publicity and feigning outrage will get them just that.

says a lot about what they think of their general userbase if they think they would be confused

Well if you've noticed how Apple has been dumbing down Mac OS, so I don't think their is any misreading there: Appe thinks most customers are, at least, not tech savvy. I regret the lowering of everything to the stupidest common denominator, but I don't think Apple's opinion of consumers in general is that off. There are a lot of very smart people that lose 100 IQ point the moment they touch a device run by a chip.

Translation: "It's our AppStore so only we can offer discounts".

More accurate: "only we can tell you about discounted apps." Apple doesn't discount apps, only devs do. Apple has never had a sale on its own royalty take from each sale.

Apple is only hurting the consumer with this one, especially with the current state of the app store in iOS6.

nope
i've used these app discovery apps before. they are crap and just push whoever paid for the advertising

Then don't use those apps and let the user make their own choices. I don't need Apple making that choice for me.
Pull it out of the AppStore and problem solved. AFAIK Apple didn't say this app couldn't exist in some other form.

I've been using an app called AppOfTheDay which basically promotes one free app every day. It's decent. I guess it might be pulled too at some point by the sounds if it?

Refreshing Stubbornness

I honestly am not sure whether nested 3rd-party storefronts within the App Store are good or not. I think in some cases yes, some no. (Experience-wise, the analogy of "walking into Nordstrom and seeing a Walmart inside" sounds awful because it's a decline in quality and incongruency of expectations, whereas "walking into Best Buy and seeing an Apple Store inside" is a breath of fresh air and not incongruent at all, as we already know.)

Regardless, what I DO like to see is Apple still obstinately protecting its own perception of the best user experience. Even if they are misstepping here, this is a small, post-Steve example that their "we're the best" stubbornness isn't behind them. Apple hasn't gotten to where it is by accommodating what users, shareholders, reviewers, etc. think they want (for five minutes until each wants something else).

that may be true but it still makes it easier to find more than 10 apps that Apple deems "New and Noteworthy".

my original point was that Apple needs to fix their App store and they wouldn't have to worry about apps like these

Except Best Buy isn't giving Apple free space in its store. Why don't you try walking into Best Buy and setting up shop inside their store and see how far you'll get.

Except membership in the AppStore is also not free .... you pay at least the $99 yearly membership and for payed apps you pay another 30% of your income to Apple. So, there is also no free space in the AppStore

Do you think that consumer needs to see a WallMart when it walks into Nordstrom?

Apple has one and only one objective here - to optimize the User Experience. Nothing is important to Apple except the user Experience. Nothing.

At worse, this particular app and others could be turned into a mobile webapp.. out of the reach of Apple.

Does Safari have a Hosts file? Can't Apple prevent access to these sorts of horrible sites on iOS devices?

----------

Glad I still have my app shopper IPA file in iTunes.

Apple needs a method to prevent this sort of thing from being installed on iOS devices in the first place, and a means to remotely uninstall it from offending devices if somebody has it on there already.

That way, customers can be comfortable that all the apps on their device meet Apple's rule. That would give customers added peace of mind.

Yes, for $99 you get to sell apps in the App Store. You don't get to set up a Store within their store for $99 a year. That would be crazy. That's why its against the terms.

It really should be. There should NOT be alternative app storefronts. Only Apple should be allowed. I mean, after all, the hardware is Apple's hardware and the OS is Apple's OS, so why should anybody be allowed to search for apps except the way Apple allows them to? Its only fair.

Don't like it? Don't buy it!

I seriously hope you're just trolling on purpose here :s

they have the app collections, download/revenue rankings, related apps, genres and a search box

i've found better quality apps reading blogs and through the app store than these services.

Ridiculous

How would Apple like it if this happened in the future?

Fake Story: CBS, NBC, ABC, and FOX in conjunction with Amazon have announced that they are no longer allowing ads from Apple, Samsung, or any other smart phone manufacturers. Amazon is concerned that allowing these ads would allow smart phone manufacturers "to buy their way to the top" polluting the Amazon.com rankings for top phones on their site.

It's called advertising.

This absolutely ridiculous. Just another case of apple dumbing it down for people who use the top downloaded apps list without reading the reviews. If you look at the reviews of some the free appgratis apps, they are brutal. If you have a bad product that is now free, people still won't buy it, unless they are not reading the reviews

No, that is likely called restraint of trade, which violates the Sherman antitrust Act & Robinson-Patman Act. Your scenario is different than what Apple is doing here - not that I agree w/ it; see my comment in this thread.

Different analogy since Walmart sells different merchandise than Norstrom. In this case AppGratis leads you to the same product just in a different way. Honestly Apple's stern fist on this is ridiculous - it makes me question their motives.

Consider this- by banning these kind of apps Apple gets to decide what apps stay on top the charts. It also makes if more difficult to find free apps.

That is revenue control on their part. Kind of shady tbh
