Have you seen Office 2013 with any version of Windows?

I honestly haven't, but I doubt it feels less weird on Windows than a browser with a brushed metal appearance, Apple's own (characteristic "thick") font smoothing engine, and (if I'm remembering correctly) a dark and not-so-subtle shadow behind the window.

Not to mention Windows users are probably used to Microsoft's tendency to perform crazy cosmetic experiments on Office between releases that don't seem to have any sort of correlation with the OS it runs on*. Except for settings windows which have managed to remain virtually unchanged, like vestigial organs or relics of a forgotten time.

So they're going to keep the nasty thing eh..... Whatevs, just don't sit on it or let your kid touch it if you ever come to town no matter how much lil Johnny wants to.

San Francisco is the most over-rated city in the US. If there is an inch of public space not bathed in urine and vomit I didn't see it. Retard leftest zeigeist is now normative throughout the US. Its a pity to see the US in general, and California in particular, in free fall decline.

I wasn't aware that it's only left oriented people that piss and vomit...

I have been all over SF and I found it a very clean and fun city. But I'm from Amsterdam, so I guess I'm used to some dirt...

such an ugly fountain get rid of it

its not modern btw its hideous postmodernism

let the homeless find a different place to bathe

The fountain should remain, let Apple build around it. Ruth Asawa, who was a world renowned San Francisco artist, invited the children of San Francisco to make dough sculptures of their neighborhoods then cast these in bronze to create the fountain. Her life was was dedicated to teaching art to children.

San Francisco is about 2 things:

Going green.

Modern Art.

Apple will make a lot of people in San Fran happy by keeping that junk/modern-art/water-fountain where it is.

I agree, joking aside... the SF residents are generally preservationists... it just good to be sensitive to the community's view since they will Apple's customers.

There's always going to be art that we like or don't like... I think the point is to make an effort to fit in and get along with their community. Looking at the new pics, the fountain gets moved a bit over and Apple redesigns some of the building - I think it's a fair compromise.

You are right, it's a great city. You were responding to an ideological rant, not a reality-based observation. To a person from outside of the US it may be difficult to understand that many Americans view San Francisco as the center of all things left and liberal, and therefore it must be a very bad place altogether.

Apparently you didn't click on my handle..

Companies are quite replaceable and are replaced quite frequently. Companies and commerce are simply a tool of society. Government is serving the people of the city of SF they're not serving Apple Inc.

OK, I clicked your handle. No surprises. My statements stand. You continue to be wrong.

San Francisco has become a homeless cesspool

San Francisco is the most over-rated city in the US. If there is an inch of public space not bathed in urine and vomit I didn't see it. Retard leftest zeigeist is now normative throughout the US. Its a pity to see the US in general, and California in particular, in free fall decline.

Completely agree. When I was a child growing up in Southern CA, I would talk all day long about how much I wanted to visit the Golden Gate Bridge. My parents would take me to San Francisco once in awhile, but it didn't occur to me until I was older that my parents were actually making excuses. I guess children don't see the "bum pee" as easily as adults. But then, I guess we can thank the idiots who ran that city into the ground for all the garbage.

Apple caved... unusual

Why do people always say this? What happened when people complained about them taking their products off EPEAT? When they found the iTV name was taken? When the iPad clock was found to infringe a patent?

Cool story bro. Regardless, that fountain sure is fugly. :)

Ignoramuses of biblical proportions!

To all the ignoramusus who are most likely either SF imports, 20 or 30 something year olds with no knowledge of either San Francisco and/or art, or simply idiots.

The people knocking it, probably haven't even ever seen it up close and looked at the intricate details of the piece. If they would they might realize that that sculpture in fact IS San Francisco. It is in fact called "The San Francisco Fountain". That fountain is as much a part of the city as Coit Tower or the Golden Gate Bridge. It is one of the most prominent pieces of public art in the City.

The fountain, whether you like it or not is an important part of San Francisco heritage and history. The person who made it, Ruth Asawa who recently passed away was a well known and beloved local artist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruth_Asawa)

For Apple to even suggest to remove it from its site only showed their ignorance about San Francisco history and heritage. And for the SF Planning Commission, which statutes clearly states that the area is a historic conservation district.

"It is rich with images of civic icons and personalities and was molded from figures shaped in bread dough - not just by Asawa but also by everyone from schoolchildren to legendary photographer Imogen Cunningham." http://tinyurl.com/q4njfkt

That stops you from not doing art?

Parasprite has done the ol' reverse troll. Classic.

i'm not a trust fund baby looking for something to do. I also have bills to be paid

Aww silly pants. You don't have to be a trust fund anything to be an artist. You just have to have skills that pay the bills. I got people handing over money right and left for me to make em art. Shoot, after making art at work all day, I can go home and make more art if I want to! Dang, sometimes I feel like I'm robbing people with the rates I charge.

Unfortunately I'm all too familiar with these kinds of views. Amsterdam is often seen in the same light as San Francisco.

Did Apple say they want to destroy it or do they propose to the city to relocate it?

As an actual liberal, it's always a little bit amusing to encounter that view.

I'm glad the fountain is being kept - I've always rather liked it. And as much as I like Apple's retail stores, a giant box of glass isn't something they really needed to stick to their guns on. They'll be just fine.

art is the biggest pile of crap of all time. i wish i could get through life by spending my time doing arts and crafts.

It interesting how you can be unemployed, broke and people will snub their nose at you. But if that same person goes around and says theyre an "artist" people will actually give them respect. they may even be given money and a studio to work in.

If you would try it, you would find that good art is extremely difficult to produce. Even modern art, which is often not understood (including me in many cases).

I spend much time in musea and am often dumbfounded by what people consider to be art. But what makes the difference for me is that good art makes me think and intrigues me.

A few years ago I was in the Frankfurt (Germany) museum of modern art. One of the installations was a mannequin or man lying face down behind a wall with only the legs protruding. It probably took about 10 minutes to produce this physically, but it had an enormous effect on the visitors and I remember it to this day. Now if a jobless person throws some twigs with paint on a board and glues them down, I would question the thought that went into this.

Alas, for me the difference between good "art" and bad "art" is craftsmanship and thought. Everyone can make bad art and sell it for a few bucks to people that don't have a clue. It's good for those "artists" that ignorant people exist that would buy anything as long as it says "art" on it.

Please show us some of your work! I'm interested!

This just in:

That fountain is still the same amount of ugly.

Why anyone would want to save that eyesore with no real significance is beyond me.

A peeing cherub fountain would be more comely.

I'm sorry to hear that, though I wonder if the slavishness to dogma and ideology that we are now suffering through in the US translates to any other county.

Did Apple say they want to destroy it or do they propose to the city to relocate it?

The initial proposal was to destroy it. The company changed their plan to relocation when they were told that destruction wasn't going to be accepted.

Your Elvis on velvet is in the mail.

Nice piece of community created art. Maybe Apple will hose it off every morning to keep the agar down.
