No plans were in stone. Do you recall the Android beta devices before the iPhone? They looked like BlackBerrys - hard keyboard, small screen, horrible interface much like the standard BlackBerry UI. It wasn't until the iPhone was released that Android changed into what it is.

I'm not saying that Jobs shouldn't stop crying but if it wasn't for the iPhone Android would look like WinMo or BB OS.

For the sake of proof (Android in 2007):

I always wondered what the Safari for Windows project was about. I just assumed it was available just so web designers could test their Web sites for the iPhone.

It makes sense now that Google was at one point going to help push it, but decided to make their own browser based on Safari’s underlying technology, WebKit instead.

I also didn’t realize Larry Page and Sergey Brin were meeting with Jobs on a regular basis at the beginning of Google or that Brin and Jobs were friends. Then there’s the whole Bill Campbell and Eric Schmidt relationship, and of course Arthur Levinson sitting on both company’s boards.

It’s easy to understand why Jobs and Apple are mad. If you go back and look at Android in 2007 it was nothing like it is today, and Google’s Android team has really made no bones about copying every little thing in the iPhone OS even to exactly the way the iPhone does things.

Currently, Android doesn’t quite have the polish the iPhone OS has. It sort of like using Ubuntu instead of Mac OS X. But with time and unlimited resources, that could very well change.

I think you've got the heads mixed up, then. Besides the fact that Jobs is universally known as the man in black (turtlenecks), maybe Schmidt should be Jacob. Then the original quote, "Do you have any idea how badly I want to kill you" still fits.

In fact;

SCHMIDT: I take it you're here because of the Multi-Touch.
MAN IN BLACK: I am. How did they find my technology?
SCHMIDT: You'll have to ask them when they get here.
MAN IN BLACK: I don't have to ask. You gave it to them. Still trying to prove me wrong, aren't you?
SCHMIDT: You are wrong.
MAN IN BLACK: Am I? They copy. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same.
SCHMIDT: It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress.
MAN IN BLACK: Do you have any idea how badly I want to kill you?
SCHMIDT: Yes.
MAN IN BLACK: One of these days, sooner or later... I'm going to find a loophole, my friend.
SCHMIDT: Well, when you do, I'll be right here.

Best post ever! (if you've watched Lost all the way to this season)

Yeah, if they drop Google for Bing, our choices might be Bing and Yahoo. Since Yahoo is already the second option on every iPhone.

I have never used bing (and I have no plans to try it), but I think it should be an option on the iPhone (like Yahoo!).

The plans were to release a smartphone OS.

Google can release its own phone, or enter any market that it wishes, in the same way that Apple can do so. So what if Google copied some iPhone features.. Apple also copies ideas from other companies, as does every other company in the world - gain inspiration and ideas from other products currently on the market.

Steve Jobs should stop crying and acting like a complete baby.

Business is business. Google acquired Android way back in 2005... way before the iPhone - the plans were in stone.

Eric Schmidt was on the board of directors of Apple. He had inside knowledge of what the iPhone was before the iPhone even existed. If Google wanted to make a smartphone OS, Eric should of resigned way back in 2007.

I always hear these things mentioned when discussing android:
  • It could change
  • It could be great eventually
  • It has potential
When will the potential of android come into fruition?

Having said that, I just sold my iPhone 3GS for a Nexus One. Why? It is a beautiful device, it is super fast, and the iPhone UI was getting incredibly dated feeling.

I have absolutely no sympathy for Apple what so ever. Business is Business.

Tough ****.

Anyway, its not like Apple had released the first button-less phone.. because there's been touch screen, button-less phones in the past, years before the iPhone saw the light of day.

The problem with Google as a company is they have no interest in your privacy. There interests is your information they can use to line their pockets. Thy equate that to content.

The evil scheme is to give you everything for free in exchange for everyone they can find out about you and use that information to market to you.

I'd rather pay for my books and keep them private.

Very well said. I really dislike the way Google wants all your info. It would probably be the end of Google if people realized the amount of data they have stored on each and every user.

Absolutely, but prior to releasing a phone Google wasn't in competition with Apple in any way and there was evidence of a lot of collaboration and cooperation between the two of them. Possibly if Google had licensed Android to other phone companies it wouldn't have been an issue, but releasing their own smartphone hardware immediately moved them into the position of a direct competitor to Apple.

And business spats often come from personal differences. There's animosity between Schmidt and Jobs that's expanding to being between companies.

This was inevitable. Microsoft hate is the residue from another era. Heck, MS was at MacWorld and Apple wasn't this year.

Google is the company going after Apple (and MS). Google is actively evil; much more than MS ever was. MS used underhanded tactics against other corporations. Google is collecting information about billions of individual people. There is no due process involved in who they decide to give this information to.

No way should anyone use gmail, google docs, voice, etc. Google will eventually have compromising private data about you. Who knows what they will do with it or how they will use this leverage.

Steve knows that Google is not just a threat to Apple. It's a threat to everyone.

That argument works very well against cloud computing in general.

What are your opinions on insider trading then?

When you are on the board of directors of a different company, your interest is your shareholders. You can't have your cake and eat it too. You can say "tough s••t" all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that Eric should have resigned a lot earlier than he did.

It would be like if LG started working with Microsoft to bring I don't know, something cool to the Xbox. LG works with Microsoft very closely in what their next gaming system is going to be. And then 6 months later a LG game console is released with a lot of the features the next Xbox has.

Also, you could say "Tough S**t to HTC or Google as well.

What are you trying to say - SJ is trying to save mankind from Google?

In a way. If Google were just another competitor he would probably be mentioning how wasteful and scattered they are or how they have no taste and can't do good UI (all true IMHO). In this case there seems to be more to it.

When it came to iPhone topics, schmitdt was asked to leave board meetings, so he very well had less information on the iPhone than we think. I wish I could find the Macrumours article on that exact topic.

Why?

Legally, Apple has every right. And before we judge Apple, let us not forget all the other companies who have gone after them recently. If they want to play the game, Apple will join.

The concept of gestures has been around since the movie "Minority report". The technical implementation of multi touch is irrelevant and probably very different between the IPhone and Android.

I Apple has actually come up with multi touch gestures themselves I would still be reluctant to give them a patent because it involves human computer interaction. It should not be possible to patent human computer interaction. That just stifles progress and serves no real purpose other than to line the pockets of corporate America.

Cheers,

Marc

This is what you get when two alpha dogs want the same piece of meat (we the users in this case)

Those who claim to be for one side amuse me, because they don't see whichever dog wins...we the consumers are whats for dinner.

...and if you do use Google, logout before doing any searches or create a dummy account when doing any searches.

Bing is not as good as Google although Bing Maps is better than Google maps.

Unfortunately any search engine that uses search as a way to deliver ads and collect user data is potentially bad. That's why competition is so important. It would be good to have the choice of Bing in Safari and on the iPhone.

"...the clash between Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Jobs offers an unusually vivid display of enmity and ambition."

More correctly: the clash between Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Jobs offers an unusually vivid display of unethically sneaky backstabbing behavior on the part of that untrustworthy philandering son of a bitch Schmidt. Jobs is no teddy bear, but at least he's honored his wedding vows and doesn't go around betraying his business partners. By comparison, Schmidt is a detestable weasel whose lack of moral compass is manifested in everything he does. Google's motto is "Don't be evil," but their CEO is such a snake in the grass that the motto is a sick joke.

Under Schmidt, Google has gone from a frat-house of brilliant ideas to the spin-axis of darkness for the Internet. Watching its actions as a partner to Apple and more recently Motorola, not to mention its disdain for the fundamentals of user privacy, it's clear Google under Schmidt cannot be trusted.
