Good to watch, but...

Google needs progress in the front-end and Apple needs to progress in the back-end.

For the life of me I cannot figure out the large amount of negative votes for practically every article post here on macrumors.

No, this is macrumors not mac news. When a PowerBook G5 is rumored, we all wet ourselves, and live in the fantasy moment. When real news shows up on here, something actual and tangible, we revolt.

More RUMORS please!

Google is huge and has billions of people's data. This is their goal.

No it is not. Google's only goal is to serve you with web ads. All Google services are designed to get you online and use the web, so they can present you with more ads.

It sounds like you have a fundamental privacy concern with cloud-based services. Fine, don't use them. No one is forcing you to.

But there is no conspiracy here. Ranting and comparing Google executives to nazis just makes you sound ignorant and childish.

Mine is more of a full helmet but yours is good too.

Is it made out of tin foil? Only tin foil can repel Google's head penetrating brain control waves from going into your head.

I also have a baseball cap model that's a bit more inconspicuous.

100% tin foil... Made in China.

Honestly, it may look like that, but people need to stop kidding themselves. I'm not going to go so far as to say they want your data but that is no longer their only goal.

Agreed. But Google wants to serve targeted ads and that is why their goal is gathering all that information about us. And that leads to some nasty consequences such as the China hacking.

Schmidt has already clearly stated what he thinks about privacy. And he is head of a company that has tons of private data about millions. That's chilling.

"Herr Schmidt" etc. is hyperbole but there are real life legitimate grave concerns to be had about Google and this is why I don't use its web services other than non-account searches.

Yes, of course. Tin foil is the 'gold standard' of Google brain control wave blocking.

I like the baseball cap brim. It could help prevent the waves from penetrating your eyes. I'll add that to my helmet.

Switching over to Bing is a bit of a threat to Google. Think about how many iPhones and iPods are out there. Google are currently the number one search engine, but putting Bing on the iPhone will increase the exposure of that search engine no end. Google won't like that. They are business people. They want their search engine on iPhone even if the two companies are now rivals.

Oh, and Adobe are evil as hell. You only have to live in Europe to know that. I can't be bothered to explain it here, but when the exchange rate was good Adobe was making 400% profit over the US price of Photoshop here in Europe. Even more in some countries. Google it. We aren't happy about it on this side of the Pond. I'll be interested to see how their prices fare now that the exchange rate is closer. The cheeky buggers even wanted to charge me Republic of Ireland tax rates even though European vat law is such that as a vat registered company I don't have to pay it. Idiots.

Memo to Apple

Google maps/address/directions/search is almost a must have set of "native apps" to the iPhone in my experiences using it to date. Bing for search and other map apps have come nowhere near as close nor are they as applicable all around the world. And as much as there are some things that I don't like about GMail and Google Calendar, they pretty much blow Mobile Me away for a small business entrepreneur (Mobile Me can't even accept a calendar invite through its web portal, let alone on the iPhone)...and its free.

There may be other replacements or over time Apple may be able to grow something as good (how about shaking Mobile Me up a bit, eh?). But take away the good things that Google does just to get rid of the bad due to spite is a great way to degrade the iPhone OS and App experience and make you "just another device". I've tried other phones, and the iPhone is still far and away the best to me...but its the apps that make it so. Force the best of them to have extra layers to go thru to use them or to go away entirely, and WinMo and Android become more competitive.

All this is just an attempt to explain to Apple very politely..."keep your &%$*#$ hands off my iPhone, its fine just the way it is!"

What can I say

1st it was IBM, then Microsoft and now Google, although I do agree with Apple for suing HTC, they stole so much and LG seem to be copying alot of Apple's icon ideas for there phones as well. There's always going to be rivalries between companies I just never ever foresaw a search engine becoming so big and powerful lol

I always hear these things mentioned when discussing android:
  • It could change
  • It could be great eventually
  • It has potential
When will the potential of android come into fruition?

Having said that, I just sold my iPhone 3GS for a Nexus One. Why? It is a beautiful device, it is super fast, and the iPhone UI was getting incredibly dated feeling.
Yeah but one software update and Apple could change their UI in a snap! You sound more like a bored consumer looking for that next thrill ride tech toy. Great for the investors. KA-CHING!

Bing Maps are superior to Google maps anyway, I don't mind Bing.

Isn't it ironic that Microsoft actually has a better privacy and data retention policy than Google?

What do you think they'll do with it? They're going to advertise to you. It's in the best interest of the company to accurately target ads to you for products you may be interested in. Are you suggesting they're going to blackmail users for money to keep their data private? How could that possibly be in any interest of Google?

Or sell you out to the feds at the drop of a hat.

There interests is your information they can use to line their pockets. They equate that to content.

The evil scheme is to give you everything for free in exchange for everyone they can find out about you and use that information to market to you.

I'd rather pay for my books and keep them private.

Very True!!! The Android users are blind too the reality of this. They run home and activate google to take over their lives! Apple will prevail over htc and google will run and hide. Google will bark a little, but they will stay on the porch and they're smart enough NOT to get involved because they are paying millions and millions of dollars too stay as a search option on the iPhone. Google needs the iPhone more than the iPhone needs them. Android sales are continuing a downward spiral and will dwindle away. Android sold a decent amount for the holidays but now the sales have dropped off and are vaporizing into thin air!

You really have no idea of anything (sorry to be this harsh...)

Google will (and read it again... will) surpass Apple with Android whether you, and Apple, want it or not... it's a fact, and more than that... the angrier Apple gets, the greater the menace is for sure.

Google has created Android for a reason, and that reason is winning, and they will win. Google does not fail.
Android is more flexible than iPhone... and that's something Apple cannot fight given its greed for money (and control).

You also forget that Android is used by many manufacturers, Google's iPhone is just one of them. The big ones are selling many units every day ;)

And no, I'm not any fan of Google nor Apple. I just read the news :) Steve said during a meeting... Android is threatening iPhone business... I wonder why... but it's a pity that Apple cannot do anything Google :D (and Apple can be thankful that Google doesn't want to buy Apple...)
