But the question remains... how many will stick with Snow Leopard when Lion is released?
I'm on the fence, at the moment. I'm still looking for the stability and reliability I had with Tiger; new features are less important, in my opinion. I've had nothing but problems with Snow Leopard, on numerous machines, so if Lion is more reliable I'll upgrade.

In other words, I guess we'll have to wait and see if Lion meets the reliability of Tiger. Here's to hoping; the lion is King of the Jungle, after all. :D

Are you sure you don't have a hardware issue?

BTW, I waited ages hoping for a fix for a screen flicker issue when not using the discrete GPU. Eventually I brought it to the Apple store. They replaced the Logic Board. The problem persisted. Finally I found out that the hard drive was somehow causing latency on the bus and ultimately caused the screen to flicker. Replacing the hard drive cured my machine. You should definitely try ruling everything out. The problem could be in an unlikely place.

Nope issue happened whe the Apple Trackpad and Multitouch 1.0 update came out. It's an issue on my MBP, my moms MBP (same model and specs as mine) and my brothers Unicode aluminum MacBook. Also there are threads about it on MacRumors. If I use my external HD with out that update, it works fine, but it's a laptop, so caring around a 3.5" drive that needs a wall outlet isn't convient.

Also the issue started with the update. No problems before I updated.

10.4.11. As I recall, nobody could believe Apple would get to double-digit point releases of one version of X. Tiger managed two.

But that came on the back of a number of Mac's being moth balled when it came to support - so for people to use their Mac's longer they continued supporting it since 10.4.x would be the last release they could run. Lion is a different kettle of fish because it doesn't kill off any hardware so the need for long term Snow Leopard support is pretty much moot at this point.

But the question remains... how many will stick with Snow Leopard when Lion is released?

That depends on how many bugs are present in the first release, and whether the system requirements change or not from Snow Leopard to Lion. That and Users who just buy a computer and don't bother with newer version of software and OSes. My parents come to mind.

I hope they really polish Leopard before moving on to Lion because I'll probably stay with Leopard. I really don't like the direction they are taking the OS. Seems to be favoring mobile apps and pushing applications from the store. I'll revaluate after I see if there are going to be options for installing the Mac store app or if it's built into the OS. It all seems a bit too "1984" for my tastes. I can see them wanting to control the software you install on an iPhone... but no way on my Mac. Sadly, I think that is the direction they are headed. It's where the revenue is at. Why else would they need build a billion dollar data center? That would give them 100% control over the whole Apple experience if everything that ran on your computer had to go through them.

I'm definitely going to stick with Snow Leopard.. I made the move to SL to free up the miniscule disk space as my hard drive was filled to the brim with music and anime. I'll take the leap to Lion whenever I get a new Mac that comes with it, which will probably be when I graduate from college.

I HIGHLY doubt this will be the last Snow Leopard update... if Lion comes out in August 2011 that would be nearly a year without any updates... just seems unlikely.

Also, yes, MacRumors really needs to be a bit more discriminating about what constitutes page 1/page 2 news.

I agree. Lion is going to be much longer of a roll-out and I don't expect to see the DVDs of it in the Mac store 'til late next year at the earliest. Also, Apple is testing the waters with the new UI that they claim is feedback from the iPhone and iPad.

My guess is that a pre-cursor of Lion was working inside The Loop right around the launch of the first iPhone with all the iPhone'isms up and running. From that, the release schedule was figured out for maximum market acceptance. Sometimes it sucks having your initial eureka held back so derivative products come out to not upset nor confuse your customer base.

My take is you will see two to three more upgrades of Snow Lep. to work with whatever new products come out well into 2011.

although it sounds like software i had this same issue after the magic trackpad update and took it straight back to bestbuy and the second time i updated it worked fine as well as on my moms alum Macbook I highly suggest taking it to apple or all of them to apple. they wont update for something they dont have enough complaints about!

10.6.5 could represent the last point upgrade to Snow Leopard as Apple has already announced Mac OS X 10.7 Lion for delivery in Summer 2011.

Huh? What makes you think that? You've been following Apple long enough to know this isn't how it works.

But, what we all want to know is ....

Will Safari be snappier?

Just reading about 10.6.5 has somehow speeded up my browsing. It's hard to explain.

It's somewhat opposite to the effect I saw when the new MacBook Air was released. For some reason that made my MacBook Pro seem really ... heavy.

It's weird. Its like ... the day that they finally came out with 512 MB SSDs, my hard disk suddenly, without warning, became really slow.

Strange. Huh?

This works in mysterious ways. Like, for some reason, when MS just announced their latest MS Windows 7 phone, my 3 year old POS Verizon phone just felt ... better ... somehow. Almost as if it had new life breathed into it, just enough to last until Verizon gets an iPhone.

It's funny how this all works. Huh?

Bad smoke, ehh!?

May i ask what you smoke @ MR? You know, we will see at least 10.6.6, which follows the same pattern as the last updates for previous cats like Tiger (10.4.11) and Leopard (10.5.8).
