Appple iPhone to be released. Thats my bet and no I havent YET gone to any other news site or Apple's site.

If they add the "album only" feature to *All* Radiohead's songs, more bands will follow. Mostly for marketing reasons. There are lots of those crappy "Radiohead wannabes - ohhhhhh our songs should not be outside their album"

Now, I can't wait for tomorrow's event!

If we get more album only things, you might as well buy the CD instead. Nothing upsets me more than an entire album on itunes which is album only.

Streaming media device

I bought the new Bob Dylan album a few days a go from the iTunes store. It comes with some bonus tracks that are videos of some older songs. I was listeningto the album yesterday, streaming the audio to the Airport Express connected to my stereo.

After it played the last song on the album, when it got to the videos, all of a sudden itunes stopped streaming the data to my AE, and started playing thru the PB speakers. I certainly didnt expect it to do that, but it did make me wonder:

Are we about to see a new piece of tech that will allow those videos to stream as well as the audio?

I think Apple is going to show impress us big time tomorrow. Here is what will be announced.

* The iTunes Movie Store (iTunes 6.5 ou 7.0) with a few notable reworking of the iTunes Store to allow the integration of movies. I think if Apple is going to charge 10 buck per movie, it will add a few interesting twist to the 'DRM license' that goes with it and that would be part of the reason why only disney will be offered at first.. . The license is what makes Apple apart of the others... Studios will have to wait a see that the 'relaxed' DRM license Apple is proposing for 9.99$ is better than the others and people will realize that by buying 'in mass' so other Studios will come in... and leave Amazon Unbox... well, in a box !

* iPod nano second gen. Larger screen, new enclosure. 4, 6, 8 gigs. May be a few more surprise in the nano (radio ?, movies playable ? we don't on this one, isn't it ?)

* iPod Video full screen size

* all the iPods with a color screen will be declared iTunes Movie Store aware...

All this will be the first part of the show... then one more thing...

There will be a 'media center' kind of box that will tap Airport Express technology in it and that will tie with iTunes as the source of the movies in the living room... the main interface will be Frontrow 2.0.

I think this the exactly the kind of incremental approach is going to take once again tomorrow to bring us Movies in our living room. A well integrated approach that includes all the piece (iPod, iTunes, Macs, and PC)...

iTunes is definitively the new plateform for content delivery...

Actually, how about vPod instead? I believe it's easier to say that than Video iPod. It'd be nice if I own that name haha and sell it million of $$ to apple haha

And the logic here is..... iPod = iPod with iusic? If Apple had that logic, we would have seen an mPod, right? Or pPod for the iPod Photo. But I have seen them doing thinks that would throw real logic out of the door, before, so yeah, why not vPod for the video one.

i'm trying to not get my hopes up on this one.. mostly because I expect that it'll just be the movie store, and that really doesn't excite me very much. I'm not the type to buy DVDs, or watch a movie more than once unless I have to.. so paying $15 for a DVD to watch on a small screen isn't as appealing as heading to my blockbuster and paying $4 to watch it once on my TV and then move on.

But boy.. if a new iPod comes out.. I'm gunna have to go work the streets tomorrow night so I can afford one.. er.

I haven't seen any rumors of this, but I would love to see an Apple-branded Comcast HD/DVR box. My Motorola set-top box already has the killer app that everyone wants to see from a IP-streaming device: HD movies on demand for $4 a pop. But the interface is slow and clunky, and Apple would do a much better job.

Nope... Tivo is already in bed with comcast and cox. They will be providing the new interface for the motorola STB (probably by the end of the year).

I really expect all of the above - though "true video iPod" and 6G iPod I think are one in the same. The only logical way to have a widescreen iPod is to have a virtual scroll wheel.

As for the movie store...I think I remember SJ in an interview awhile back saying, while he likes the purchase model for music, movies lend themselves to the subscription model because most people only watch a movie once or twice, Star Wars geeks notwithstanding. So I think the movie store is going to be like a true movie store. If you want to buy a movie you can, but the emphasis will be more on a NetFlix type model. A $15/mo sub gets you 3 movies at a time, unlimited d/ls per mo. Alternatively, you could rent a single movie for $4, viewable for a week or so. For people who don't have time to convert a DVD to an iPod viewable format that makes sense. Buying for $15 or $10 isn't going to excite anyone I don't think.

I hope you don't mean "never"... but I agree it's not likely to be tomorrow, unless it's tossed in as an aside ("We've released a bunch of great new products today... but what I want to tell you about is how you can use them to access movies through iTMS....").

Someday they'll have to update the MBPs, and I'm hoping it will be soon, because I need a new laptop!

Hrumpf... When I was a lad, we used to have to chisel the ones and zeros into a stone tablet with our fingernails, carry them to and from the server 5 miles through a snowstorm (uphill, both ways), only to have our father delete them, kill us outright, and dance about on our graves singin' hallelujah!

Considering the Keynote isn't till 10AM tomorrow I doubt we will be talking about amazing new products this time tomorrow

I doubt a download service would be able to offer unlimited movie downloads, at least not for a price next to netflix. Netflix "unlimited" movies really aren't because they are limited by the speed of the post office (and artificially limited even more by Netflix if you watch too many).

As for those who abuse the system, nothing to stop Apple from cutting people off just like Netflix does.

Even if you rip the DVD's from netflix (or just watch them immediately and send them back), you're still limited by the speed of the post office. With unlimited downloads, you could watch three or four movies a day if you had time (I doubt most Netflix users are only watching 2-5 DVD's a month, if they do they might be better off renting normally). The "brake" allows much fewer with Netflix. And if you really promise "unlimited", watching a ton isn't really abusing the system, is it? Apple would have to either have a monthly cap or raise prices.

I know what it will be

A wi-fi enabled NAS-box that sits next to your TV. It will be able to play files firectly to the telly, without your computer being on.

It will be controlled by a thing that looks just like an iPod. This wi-fi device gives you access to your media, using an iPod-like menu structure. This remote tells the NAS-box what to play. Video is not streamed wirelessly, since that requires too much bandwidth. Instead, the NAS-box is connected directly to the TV.

But the NAS box can also stream audio, via Airport Express, to hi-fis. Multiple strreams can be supported, and additional remotes can be added to the system to enable users in different parts of the house to listen to different things.

You computer need not be on for all this to operate. Although it is needed for management and perhaps downloading.

I know this because I emailled Apple a year or two back to suggest it. And its such an ace idea, I am sure they listened.

vPod, VideoPod, iPhonePod...

Hi all


This debate about video downloads, DRM, small screens vs. big screens, etc. just makes me suspicious of one thing: the iPod brandname is just too good to take chances with it.

As Steve Jobs said in the original presentation of iPod, music is something that relates to everyone. this product can be sold to anyone, and the related services have to make sense from the point of view of Mac and PC users alike. This doesn't happen with video, IMHO.. there are just too may details that prevent TV and video to appeal to everyone.. different film ratings, different availability of broadband, NTSC vs. PAL TV sets (to plug your "vPod" to), ...

I an't wait to see what is coming out of this new presentation, but I'm hoping for something less revolutionary. It's not the fault of Apple Computer that things are complicated sometimes... the iPod product is good as is, it would be strange to taint its name with a launch of a video service with 1/10 of the reach of iTunes/iPod...
