Apple's U.S. Market Share Trend: 1Q06-3Q10 (Gartner)

Research firm Gartner today issued a preliminary report detailing U.S. and worldwide PC shipments for the third quarter of 2010, showing sales growth of Apple's Mac product outpacing that of the industry as a whole and showing Apple surpassing 10% share of the market.
Apple had another strong quarter. Increasing traffic to Apple, associated with the iPad release (iPads are not included in Gartner's PC shipment statistics), as well as iMac and Mac Pro refreshes, contributed to the growth.
According to Gartner's report, Apple placed fourth among U.S. computer shipments with a 10.4% market share on unit growth of 13.7% over the year-ago quarter. The performance fell just short of Acer's third place showing at 10.5% and was up from the previous quarter's 9.8% and from 9.3% in the year-ago quarter.

Gartner's Preliminary U.S. PC Vendor Unit Shipment Estimates for 3Q10 (Thousands of Units)

Overall, Gartner saw only a 2.2% gain in U.S. PC shipments over the year-ago quarter, citing weakness in consumer PC demand fostered in part by the iPad delaying planned PC purchases.
"Media tablet hype around devices such as the iPad has also affected consumer notebook growth by delaying some PC purchases, especially in the U.S. consumer market. Media tablets don't replace primary PCs, but they affect PC purchases in many ways," Ms. Kitagawa said. "At this stage, hype around media tablets has led consumers and the channels to take a 'wait and see' approach to buying a new device."
Despite Apple's strong performance in the U.S., the company was unable to break into the top five computer manufacturers on a worldwide basis, where Asus and Toshiba battled over the fourth and fifth spots at 5.4% and 5.3% shares respectively.

Good to see Apple increase market share. Proves 90% of people living in this country and the rest of the world are still dumber than a rock though.

And this statement supports what many Windows users think of those of us who use Macs. Nice job getting the trash talking jump started there.

What do they count as a PC?

Does it include:
- Netbooks?
- Windows Home Server?
- Small Business Servers?

Nice,

Apple seems to be firing on all cylinders lately. Its good to see that people are still buying Macs and given the October 20th event, it looks like apple isn't quite ready to give up on it as well :)

Apple gets no love each holiday season. Their market share takes a sharp market drop in each Q4.

All of those as well as POS (Point of Sale), Corporate desktops, Internet cafe kiosks, other random kiosk PCs and other industrial installations.

This is why these statistics are largely meaningless. If they were to only look at home computer sales then Apple would be much higher.

I didn't read the entire report, but I would guess from this that this includes netbooks and iPads as well -

"Large deals in the enterprise and government sectors drove PC sales in the quarter. In the consumer market, replacement demand for primary PCs, both desktop and large-size mobile PCs, has continued to grow since the beginning of 2010."
It does "NOT" include iPads.

no article specifically says ipads not included.... presumably netbooks are tho which is lame

this is only hardware though, right?

the list looks like it is only saying Apple hardware out there is at 10% market share correct? the actual market share for OS X should still be in the sub 10% range right?

Like saying your football team is better than of the other guy?

So Windows users are all lovely toward Apple customers?
Yes, i understand you!
But also understand juliuspierpont.
Ignorant journalists are the worst people spreading wrong myth about the Mac, and Mac users.

Apple aesthetic and invisibility is the main setback.
