"Regulators were worried that the merger between the two companies would provide Apple with a wealth of data that could allow it to target its competitors' customers, ultimately resulting in fewer music streaming options for European citizens."

That's always a possibility. Apple may want this in their favor.

Shazam became unreliable for me it stopped recognizing songs which I found extremely odd because it used to work perfectly.

Now my default app is SoundHound, far more reliable for me.

I wonder if they dropped the ball after the Apple acquisition, same as what happened with the Siri stagnation after purchase.

If Apple acquires Shazam, I’m guessing I’ll no longer be able to link my Spotify account to Shazam because that seems like something Apple would do. I understand why they would do this from a business standpoint but as a consumer I would be very disappointed to no longer have a choice in what music streaming service I connect Shazam with. I’m hoping I’m just overreacting and that if this deal goes through, I’ll still be able to Shazam songs and have them automatically added to a playlist on my Spotify account.

You’d have to assume that Apple is buying Shazam to help with music discovery for Apple Music.

If that’s the case, you’d imagine that it makes sense for them to have Shazam on as many devices as possible - including Android devices and those who are Spotify/Pandora etc users, to get as much data as possible about what people are listening to/curious about & where.

Whether they’ll still keep the integrations for other services is a moot point.

You’d have to imagine not, with track clips being played back via Apple Music with an invitation to subscribe.

Oh and Spotify etc. will be losing access to a source of music discovery data.

Time for them (Spotify) to buy Soundhound or (more likely) to integrate their tech into their mobile app.

Sure, very believable. Shazam decided to destroy itself by not working with iOS anymore when in the midst of being acquired by Apple. Probably a "poison pill" strategy to avoid being acquired?? "Sound" business plan.

I've already setup my Apple Music to pull any song I tag in Shazam and add it to a playlist within Apple Music. Works well. Nice to have the full version of all songs, then I can simply move them to other playlists.

With Apple buying Shazam, it's likely it'll be even easier to get the full version of any song you identify.

I highly doubt it'll still work with Spotify. Apple wants people to use its own service, not others. There's no benefit to helping their competition by keeping Spotify as an option.

If it was up to Apple, it would probably do that (at least tried to). But EU antitrust committee was specifically questioning this acquisition for that reason alone. It's been delaying Apple for buying Shazam for months.

In my opinion Apple is required to keep Shazam app separate for Android and iOS, maybe even open its own recognized songs with Spotify, but will give some additional perks for iOS users. Expect a deeper Siri integration, always listen mode as Android on Pixel 2, and maybe direct integration with Music app.
Apple is no stranger for doing this thing, just like with Apple Music for Android, iTunes for Windows, even microUSB ports on most Beats lineups.

But of course Apple will keep some of the best features for its own ecosystem.

Not much of this thread makes any sense so far. Why would Apple need to purchase Shazam, they certainly don't need help developing software that recognises audio. They don't care what Shazam does to the software. The real reason is this:
