So was this a way to make the iPhone look like it recieved better signal than other phone and to us than it really had?

There really should be some type of standard for how the bars are displayed making phone vs phone comparisons accurate.

Great now I can do the signal drop thing on my 3GS and I haven't had more than 4 bars since I updated with an average of 3 bars. I liked my old bars that lied to me better.

I have experienced the signal drop when touching that spot where the two antennae meet. But I don't think I've had any dropped calls or slow data because of it. Bottom line...in general everyday use my iPhone 4 has better reception. I can now make and receive calls in my apartment consistently where I couldn't with my 3GS. I didn't use a bumper at first, I do now because i find it easier to hold with the bumper. The new design looks cool but its definitely harder to hold than the 3GS without the bumper.

There's probably some beta antennae testing going on in this update without letting anyone know so they will be able to build from here.

That isn't exactly true..

I just find it ridiculous that the signal could drop for 60% from maximum and still show 5 bars.

The signal doesn't drop 60%. dB is logarithmic. APPROXIMATELY a 3dB increase indicates a signal that it twice as loud as your original signal. That's a lot different than a change of 60% (a linear change).

Feh!
I always just assumed the bars were BS. My old 3G would show 5 full bars while in my house and yet would still drop calls without moving a foot in any direction.
I just backed out iOS 4 because it was too much of a killer to my old phone.
So won't get to see if there is a difference now.
But regardless of what tomorrow brings, and even though my contract is about to expire in a few days, I think I'll just hold out for a Verizon version (hopefully within the next year). Cause AT&T and living in SF make the phone part of an iPhone pretty much a big joke.

Is it me or did iOS 4.0.1. cause my 3GS to have low signal? Come on Apple! You fix iPhone 4 signal but screwing with 3GS?

well damn, i went from 5 bars to 5 bars with no signal loss with death grip, and 3 bars to 3 bars with no signal loss with death grip!

This doesn't fix anything.

I have the same issues I had prior. My gf just got off my phone, she called someone else, tried to face time connect a land line she was talking to and put the person on speaker phone. And also she was complaining my phone kept cutting out. We both got 3GS phones on launch, I sold mine and got the 4 recently. She kept her 3GS. The 3GS always has higher signal and no proximity sensor problems. grrrrr

So, if this was just an issue of how bars are displayed, why then does speedtest yield slower results? :(

So, if this was just an issue of how bars are displayed, why then does speedtest yield slower results? :(

I'm also seeing reduced downstream speeds of ~600kbps after this update vs previous speeds of ~2000kbps on 4.0.0

Before: < -113 dB = No service
After: -121dB to -113dB = One bar; < -121dB = No service.

If the software would prevent a call from being placed if "No service" is the reception status, then this software update will effectively improve reception for many people.

It won't. You should read this forum more, a lot of people have confirmed that it's a hardware issue and can't be fixed in software! :D

Seriously, I'm ashamed. The article says the reception range is increased by 8dBm, and only two people comment on this! THAT is the part that could really help the dropped calls, death gripped and not. Plus we present the major update to the modem firmware! "Boo-hoo, I don't like the new bars, get a grip Apple!".

The point is, Apple could do it on a 1-100. I'm not saying that if -121 were 1 then -111 would be 10, but how about Apple does the math and converts the numbers to a scale that makes it simple.

Turning a logarithmic range of 70dBm (that actually behaves exponentially) to a percentual scale, and then apply a balancing formula? How would that make sense to anyone? Reception quality has been presented in five bars for closer to two decades, no reason to change that. People already know that the phone might function normally with two bars. No matter what the new numerical scale would be, it would have to be learnt (and cried over) all over again. And Apple is not a kind of a company that will let users to choose how to present the bars/decibels/percentages.

Death grip is gripping on us still.;)

So you tried iOS 4.0.1 already? Or do you mean that the death grip is gripping on us via the media but not the actual phones? Or is it gripping only US?

At the end of the day it doesn't work. here is my video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXYBXQQYgNs signal drops when I pinch the bottom left with 3G on or off.

Did you drop a call? Did you lose voice connection? Did the data rate stall? If the only thing you care about are the bars, I suggest you make a sticker with 6 bars and glue it on the display.

did iOS 4.0.1. cause my 3GS to have low signal?

No, dear, your signal is intact. Stop running for bars.

The American public can tolerate quite a bit, but they will not tolerate being played for a fool.

I bet.

Found an iFly outside. Tried death grip -> immediately out of service. Will not tolerate!

still have the issue, and on top of that i lost everything during the upgrade because it errored out the first time so i had to do a clean restore fml

Death grip still does nothing for me

Same here. I always had full bars in downtown DC. If I death grip for 1 minute, I can only get it to go down one bar to 4. Before the update it would go down to no service in about the same time.

Maybe it's just me, but I can hold the phone in either hand and not be close to touching the strip. When it's in my palm, my hand barely rests against it. People need to start holding it like the piece of art it is.

Please let's talk about this

...so I don't have to start a new thread, because I really want some feedback.

First, the signal vs bars analysis is excellent and it's exactly what I see on my phone.

I don't drop calls.

But- doesn't the connectionn- when you're down to two bars - two bars now, the accurate reading- doesn't the connection just SOUND crappy?

It's like anew generationsnof cell phones ago, where you think the call dropped, you say "you still there? And they say yeah, but choppy poor quality.
