Just amazing how an 'innovative' company like Apple can't get this right.

Pretty lame when I have to open up Google's app for info.

I find Siri useful. Sometimes there are words or phrases it doesn’t understand and it ticks me off but for the most part it works well. Generally that only happens in my car anyway. I really like the iOS11 update where she now translates. I just wish they would offload the speech to text piece to make it local as it does on the Apple Watch. It’s seriously fast on Series 3 and what it should be like on the iPhone.

I use Siri every single day for dictation and searching. Yes, it's not perfect. But truthfully, I do find Siri to be extremely useful and responsive. Siri has it Made my iPhone usage quicker and convenient when it matters most.

Same. Siri is absolutely necessary for my daily commute as well, and the reason I opted to upgrade the headunit in my car to a CarPlay unit. I finally have a true hands-free experience, and I'd never go back.

I admit Google is excellent for searching and is fast. But all these voice assistants do the same thing. It's just a matter of preference. I still find Siri useful in searches. But where I use Siri most, is dictation for text or E-mails. And I really have no complaints, aside from
Some minor grammatical errors. But it's much faster than typing for me and I accomplish those tasks faster versus not using Siri at all.

I love siri on my new watch 3 and Iphone 8+!
It works quite well.
I like that you don't have to plug the phone in for it to work.
Happy Birthday Siri!

I am really impressed with it on my Series 3 too. Because of vocal abilities on the watch, LTE, and a few other speed improvements, I have been leaving my phone behind a lot more now. Watch + HomeKit has been a great experience for me now with the new Siri vocal feedback.

I honestly had doubts the upgrade from my Series 0 would be so worthwhile, and am really amazed Siri ended up being a big reason I like the new watch.

On October 4, 2011, Apple held a media event in which it introduced Find My Friends, refreshed the iPod Nano and iPod touch, and revealed the iPhone 4s with its all-new Siri voice assistant. This means that today marks the sixth year anniversary of when Apple's Siri was first introduced to the world, although the AI helper wouldn't be available to the public until the iPhone 4s launch on October 14, 2011.

In the original press releases for Siri, Apple touted using your voice to send text messages, schedule meetings, set timers, ask about the weather, and more. Apple explained Siri's understanding of context and non-direct questions, like presenting you with a weather forecast if you ask "Will I need an umbrella this weekend?"

The original Siri interface on iOS 5

Apple didn't create Siri itself, however, as the company purchased the technology that's now prevalent in all iOS devices by acquiring Siri, Inc., a spinoff of SRI International where the technology originated. Prior to the assistant's presence on iPhone, Siri was a standalone app on the App Store (launched February 2010) that offered automated personal assistant services through integrations with third-party apps like OpenTable, FlightStats, Google Maps, and more. Users could interact with these apps using Siri's voice-recognition technology, created by Nuance.

Just two months after Siri appeared on the App Store, reports of Apple's acquisition of Siri surfaced in April 2010, and the purchase was quickly confirmed by representatives and board members from the voice-recognition company. According to Siri board member Shawn Carolan, "The offer from Apple was of a scope and tenor that it was a no-brainer to accept it." The standalone app was removed from the App Store after Apple's unveiling of its own Siri in October 2011.

Over the years, Siri has debuted new features and expanded to more devices, including the iPad (June 2012), iPod Touch (September 2012), Apple Watch (April 2015), Apple TV with Siri Remote (September 2015), Mac with macOS Sierra (September 2016), and HomePod (coming December 2017).

Since 2011, Siri has become a large enough part of Apple's brand that the company just this year launched a series of advertisements focusing solely on the assistant's helpfulness, aided by actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The latest version of iOS, iOS 11, has seen a few improvements brought to Siri, including a more natural speaking voice, text-to-talk, and a translation feature.

Details about Siri's origin at Apple have continued to emerge over the years, with voice actress Susan Bennett revealing a few behind-the-scenes tidbits about the early days of the project in an interview posted earlier in 2017. Bennett described having to say "nonsense phrases" like "Say the shrodding again," which she later realized provided Apple with "all of the sounds of the English language."

The next place that Siri will be found in is Apple's HomePod speaker, which was for a long time simply called the "Siri Speaker" prior to its official unveiling at WWDC in June. HomePod will greatly rely on user interaction with Siri, allowing for music playback, HomeKit control, timer settings, news reports, and essentially most of the tasks that Siri can already do elsewhere. Most importantly, Siri will become a "musicologist" in HomePod and gain a greater understand of music-related trivia to greater enhance HomePod's position as a high-quality audio device.

Despite advancements, many users frequently point out Siri's flaws and inconsistencies in certain situations. It's been rumored previously that Apple's development on Siri has been hindered by the company's commitments to privacy. But, in an interview last month Apple VP of marketing Greg Joswiak argued that user data privacy and a smart AI assistant can co-exist: "We're able to deliver a very personalized experience... without treating you as a product that keeps your information and sells it to the highest bidder. That's just not the way we operate."

Siri has BARELY evolved especially in wake of competition!

Funny this article shows NO credit to the singer/song-writer featured in the ad posted: Ray Charles "What'd I say"

I want an iPhone SE(5, 5S) size with iPhone X's front. Now that would be the ultimate phone for me

That would be fantastic as well, but they need to move the power button to the side and not have it on the top.
an iPhone SE size with iPhone X from design would be a really easy purchase. (I do prefer the glass design of the iPhone 4s)
I rather have a smaller phone and then buy an iPad for my media consumption needs at home.

Heh, now you've done it! Re-started the old, "I want the power button on the top" debate :)
Yes, I still have an iPhone 4s and I liked the button on the top, so I can take a picture
and not turn the phone off ;)

Is there ANY evidence of AI in Siri? All capabilities can easily be hardcoded and answered by normal search queries in any DB of their choosing (SQL, Elasticsearch etc etc)

What is AI in Siri? Maybe speech to text have some AI functionality or improvements by AI but other than that?

this is exactly why they all fail to begin with. we should not have to learn how to talk to them.
Sorry, I don’t agree with that. And this goes into my gripe with people being so demanding with technology, and not understanding how nice it is to have what we do in this day and age. But, like yours that you shared, this is only my opinion.

In the regard of understanding language, different social groups that speak the same language often have different communication styles. Part of being human is being able to adapt to a context of speaking that is both understandable, and in the case of human contact, isn’t offensive. At least we don’t have to worry about insulting Cortana, Siri, or Google assistant. Yet...

It has more contextual awareness than it did when launched. If you ask Siri “what it is like outside”, it will tell you the current weather, if you follow up with “what about tomorrrow”, it will know what you are talking about weather, and give you tomorrow’s forecast.

Only thing that works well is dictating a "Reminder". For some reason, they are always perfect.

The rest of the time, YMMV (your milage may vary!)

Having the power button on the top on the 4s works really well but on the iPhone 5 I am unable to click it without having to really stretch when using it with one hand.
I prefer using a phone with one hand , the size of 5 and 4s is great size ratio for that.
I have an iPhone 7 now and while it is great to have a 4.7inch screen I would prefer a 4.7 or 4.2 inch screen in the size of iPhone 4s/5.
There is a market for smaller phones.

6 years and still totally useless. Between it seeming to take up to 3 seconds from invoking it to actually begin listening, to misunderstanding many words, to completely understanding Hawaiian names (I live in Hawaii), I find Siri even less useful than the totally inaccurate, missing most content, Maps.
