With the new Retina display and Bluetooth keyboard support I don't see this not happening very soon. It'll probably be like iBooks and just take an update for them to work on iPhone.

I also see this exclusive to iPhone 4.

Just a Pages editor

I'll probably never use Keynote or Numbers, but I'd like to use Pages. The Notes app on iOS is pretty lame, and I would like to keep track of dozens of docs if possible. I can already do that on my iDisk, but those docs are read-only. (And Google Docs for mobile didn't allow editing the last time I checked.)

It might be best to have local cache of Pages docs on iOS devices that sync via MobileMe to iDisk and your other iOS devices. That method is already in place, of course. You could edit on the go without a wi-fi or AT&T connection, and have everything automatically sync later.

The problem would be merging different versions of the same doc. Edit a file on your iPhone, then on your iPad, and you might have a conflict. Notes simply asks you which version is the correct version. Pages docs might be more complex, and would require line-by-line merging. Maybe this is why Apple hasn't done iWork for iOS yet.

Numbers could be useful...

One of the main reasons I bought the iPad was for Numbers and doing a bar inventory on a device the size of a clipboard. If I could walk around with my iPhone and then transfer my inventory into my spreadsheet on the iPad...wow, that would be even better! My setup uses the forms to input each item as I get my weights...the 3.5" screen would be more than sufficient for input and then I could crunch my numbers in Numbers on the iPad! I say bring it! Using the iPad cut my inventory down from 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours...as well as saving 12 sheets of paper a week! This might shave another 15 minutes off depending on the transfer process!!! Wireless sync would be great, but I'm not opposed to a camera connect kit sync...Uploading to MobileMe or e-mailing would take a little steam out of it, but would still be acceptable!

Is it possible to use the iPhone for presentations via VGA on a videoprojector? Steve Jobs did something like at at several WWDC over the pasts years as far as I recall.

iMovie works because you're getting the content on the go and it doesn't require a bunch of typing.

I'm not sure iWork would be all that great on iPhone. With the keyboard onscreen, there just isn't enough room to be practical.

Ironically enough I was just going to post a thread today about the possibility of a Pages app for the iPhone.

This is great news. I have no problem reading on the retina display.

So yeah, another great reason to own an iPhone. And possibly another reason to wait on buying an iPad.

Not something I'm jumping about, but with Retina display and Bluetooth keyboard compatibility it's certainly a possibility. I doubt however that it will a deal sealer for those of who are thinking of converting to an iPhone

This is great if you have a wireless keyboard at your disposal.
Well, if you are lugging a wireless keyboard with you, why not just use your laptop? I find this potential release to be an on the go app.

I realize some people may not have a laptop, but I also think that number is small. Especially small for those interested in buying a iWork app.

Perhaps this has already been suggested, but remember the rumor of a new Apple TV the size of an iPhone? What if the iPhone easily connects to an external monitor (like a pico projector)? iPhone 4 supports an external keyboard. Now we have a presentation and simple editing solution in our pockets.

Yes the new iPhone works with the iPad video out dock and paired with a Bluetooth keyboard i don't see why iWork + iPhone 4 and these accessories doesn't = win.

Hell, I would be happy just to get iPhone's Mail app to be able to click on an ".ics" calendar event. Seriously, how hard is this? iPhone syncs my calendars, iPhone syncs my mail, iPhone's Calendar app views all my already imported ics files. Why can't it just open up an .ics calendar attachment? Plus, they were promising this way back in 3.0. Forget, iWork, give me a "working" calendar!

For those of you who don't remember an eariler time with Palms and PDAs used with keyboard stands... this would be a practical solution if you don't want to carry much (if anything) and still work on a high quality document. I think iWork would be an instant buy for me, especially for use on a plane. Some of us sit in Economy class and have long legs, so its not that comfortable to use a full-size laptop (or even a netbook, often). :D

it just simply wont work even with a proper setup the whole feel of it wont work

In theory I like this idea. I would find it very useful in a pinch. But content creation with Keynote and Pages would have to implement some sort of drag-and-drop technique for placing images. I guess I could press-hold-copy in Safari, minimize Safari and re-launch Pages and then press-hold-paste. But that's less than ideal. If anyone can, I'd bet that Apple can find an elegant way around that type of clunky workflow. When I'm working in Pages or any other multimedia creation tool, I always have several windows open at once. That really wouldn't work on the iPhone, obviously. But as many other people have said, my 3.5" phone wouldn't become my main content creation tool anyway.

There have been apps for modifying documents for a long time. They are more based on Word/Excel file formats than iWork, but that is the industry.

I agree, word processing would be difficult on 4 inches.

I wish they would come out with a 6-8" iPad/iPhone. I would not write full papers on it but use it to keep a journal, input data and sudden ideas.

I've always wanted a nice portable/pocket computer when I go do fieldwork for my research.

I'm planning on going with my 13" MBP for heavy duty writing at the end of the day. But during the day I'll be "in the field" and would want something less precious, less conspicuous, easy to carry in a pocket, but large enough to do some decent inputing.

One day the crowd clamors that they want the ability to edit office documents and just a lame 'viewer'.

Today the mob is seems to be mocking how silly such an application would be on the same screen which now suddenly feels too small.

The mind of the mob is fickle, indeed.

My takes:

1. iPhone 4 has an incredibly sharp screen that can actually make slideshow creating, making a flyer or an little worksheet on the go reasonably easy if you don't have an iPad.

2. iOS now allows external keyboard control for if you need much typing.

3. iPhone versions of Pages, Keynote and Numbers going for 4.99 each, or 9.99 for the trio, would be a great value for a sizable subset.

I tried hooking up a bluetooth keyboard to my iPhone a few days ago, and it really was a revelation. I was just using it for ichat, but I can see how being about to type notes into a pages document on the iphone would be very useful. I used to take research notes on my Palm using a fold out keyboard. Sure, formatting isn't easy or sophisticated, but for note taking and sketching out texts, it was very useful.

So, yes, this might be something useful. I do with idisk integration was better though.
