They need to build up the hype because its mediocre

Exactly. Those in-store Apple Watch displays don't even look good judging from the photographs - they should have limited them to only a few combinations. It looks like a crappy department store display.

On a side note, I think they're trying to get people used to the idea of implantable technology - they want us to become controllable cyborgs.

Revenue likely. Profit in this segment? It will take some time and also depend on the Edition watch...

Apple would have to sell 110,000 38mm Sport watches to equal $38 million in revenue.

Or they could sell 200,000 and make a nice profit.

Frankly... I don't think it would take much time at all to reach either of those numbers. Does anyone have a guess for pre-order numbers? Or April 24-26 first-weekend numbers?

There were rumors of Apple producing millions of watches... so selling a couple hundred thousand shouldn't be difficult.

And while the Edition Watch is highly profitable... it will be sold in much lower volume compared to the other models. I don't think Apple is counting on the Edition to make the bulk of their money.

You have to think about R&D efforts before speaking about profit. I guess they're even higher than for the original iPhone.

After rethinking, the gold price alone as a component in the bill of materials was very high according to some statements. Though the margin might be smaller than I thought in the first place.

... and all this doesn't include how many movies the Apple Mac has been in either ....

I've worked in advertising for the last 15 years - I know a thing or two. My point was, this launch will be different from the others. Normal/average people aren't interested in the watch, just the Apple faithful who were going to buy it anyway.

Perhaps I should have just said "Waste of money"

Someone at work said the ad made them really want the watch. She's not one of the 'Apple faithful'.

Obviously I wasn't making a concrete statement that not a single person would be affected by this, but I really truly don't think these ads are going to inspire large groups of people to go and buy this thing.

I wasn't even seriously suggesting they shouldn't advertise it, obviously they will (and should) but 38 million in a month seems a little excessive for a product I really think they're going to have issues with. After this first wave of product ships to the people that ordered last night, I think there's going to be a sharp decline in sales.. advertising or no advertising. And that's due to two reasons: 1. I don't think this is on people's radars. And 2. The watch doesn't do anything that amazing that if you see someone with one, you're going to "have to have it."

Time will tell (pun never intended)

And the repair price is almost like buying new. LOL.

I use mac, iphones, ipad. But I know they're going downhills in next few years due to greed in pricing, bad software QC, and seem unable to bring something meaningful that spark "must have" desire.

That's why more advertising needed than before. To keep people drinking their kool aid

Oh sure... but I was talking about profit per unit.

You know Apple doesn't make a product unless they can make tons of profit on it.

Apple profit margins be crazy! :D

to be fair--the iphone was a once in a generation paradigm shifting product that was released onto a maturing itunes ecosystem. Perfect storm. The smart watch is funky accessory that offers little promise for ecosystem synergy. In light of yesterday's reviews, Tim Cook's hyperbolic apple watch statements
seem delusional.

I agree

Expensive!!

WOW, thats an expensive 1 min commercial! But looking at how apple watch is backed up until June, I am sure apple is going to make bank!! Did you see how expensive the watches are??
They range from $349 to $17,000!!

http://money.cnn.com/2015/04/10/technology/apple-watch-store-open/

"The Apple Watch Sport, with a rubbery band, starts at $349. But the Apple Watch Edition, which is crafted with 18-karat gold, starts at $10,000. The most expensive model, a 38mm 18-karat gold watch with modern buckle costs $17,000."

Found this little gem:

Schiller, discussing the iPhone, said Apple decided not to pay for any advertising during a brief period after the device was introduced in January 2007 and when it went on sale later in the year.
"We didn't need to," Schiller said. He read from several rave reviews of the iPhone and iPad, explaining that such stories did a better job than advertising to build buzz.

So, what changed?

It's now 2015 and not 2007? Trick question?

I don't see how this is any different than any other new product launch from Apple. With cutting edge products your target audience is always the enthusiasts/early adopters but you still need to get the word out and educate the masses.

And if average people aren't interested as you say, then doesn't it make that much more sense to increase frequency and reach with more ad buys not less? I'm not sure I understand your logic.

You both are right to an extent.
