I can cope with you liking Android but come on, don't be ridiculous. No one actually likes blackberry!

I like Blackberry for it's lack of features. My days are always more productive having a Blackberry because I do not get distrated by entertaining apps and I never need to worry about battery unlike Android phones and the iPhone. I'm out of the house by 8am and back home at 3am sometimes. iPhones/Android phones are just not able to widthstand long days like that.

And in my opinion, nothing beats a physical keyboard.

In what way does Safari "suck"? I find it to be quite a nice experience. It's fast, simple, and it looks great. I'm not saying it's perfect but it works well (and I like Chrome too). Safari set the high bar for what mobile browsers are today, not to mention the WebKit engine that powers it, as well as just about every other mobile browser, including Chrome.

Pre-iOS 6, safari was really, really.... really..... slow

Well thats nice you've had zero problems, but plenty of other people have - and these have been very well highlighted on these forums and media.

Functionality missing - such as walking, public transit, street view? Apple maps even show land masses that simply don't exist or entire towns in the ocean!!

What functionality is missing?

We must be talking about a different maps application than the one that came with IOs5 and down. There is no comparison in how much better this new maps app is. I've had 0 problems.

<snip>
I think the complaints are over kill.

So, I've been saying this for a while, but I'll say it again. Apple did what it had to do. If you go back 5 years or so, things on Google Maps were off by miles too. Thanks to the report a problem button, everything is much better these days. Give it a year or so, and Apple's maps will be as accurate as Googles. Good riddance.

The average customer expects to have the same functionality for Maps in iOS6 as they did in iOS5. They don't give a crap if Apple had to make their own maps.

They sure showed them. Apple said Google could take their outdated mapping app and pin it. Apple, in turn, implemented voice activated turn-by-turn without Google.

It's basically a proof of concept, saying, 'We're not intimidated by your head start. As the largest company in the world, we can hire, buy or develop internally the technology required to make this a global success.' Customers look forward to the 'real thing' once Apple gets the kinks out.

In other words, Apple couldn't care less about their consumers. Thanks :apple:

Regardless of any friction between Apple and Google (notice I'm not talking about people here) - I believe Apple would have gone this way anyway with maps. They don't nor have ever really wanted to rely on 3rd party integration. The began acquisitions long before Steve made any "vow" to destroy Android (note Android - not Google).

You can feel free to believe Apple's move to their own mapping solution was all about sticking it to Google. I don't.

Unfortunately Steve failed miserably at destroying Android and or Google to the extreme that it cost him is life from neglect.

Exactly, and if they're marketing to the masses, what's the point of releasing a perfectly working maps app with a year left on contract and releasing a super-buggy app to developers for private beta testing?
The sarcasm in that sentence is overwhelming me.
And really, what is the harm of staying a few months behind the competition? They've already done it for 12...

Steve would have never destroyed Google or Android.

And to be honest, he might have saved his life had he listened to his doctors early on.

Oh yeah, crippling their flagship product with a ****** Map appliation that doesn't work outside the US very well, and hell hardly works in the US, was a great move for the customer.

Oh yeah, all this " new " stuff in Apple Maps, has been on Android phones for YEARS. My google maps on my S3 is voice activated, and can well. Actually find stuff.

Sorry Apple, the daily bar is NOT in a lake, Its on land ;)

Oh yeah, that outdated Mapping app, was made by Apple ;)

Oh, Apple is just worth the most right now, when it comes to assests, and markets, as well as products made, they are far from the largest.

This.

Is why I'm highly considering handing back my 4S to my employer, and spending my own money on a blackberry, I love having a battery that can last far more than one day. I have an S3, and the battery is terrible on that compared to a Blackberry tour ( what I want ).

Blackberry - The smartphone for actual work, and not just dicking around.

ARRGHHH.

This is not how Google made Google Maps better.

Google made Google Apps better by employing thousands of people to go through and manually collate together data from various sources together with street view.

Google made the POI data better by being Google, and thus businesses falling over themselves to make sure that they had the right details on the world's biggest search engine. But what does a company without any Apple kit do about Apple Maps?

Users reporting problems only made a tiny difference. If Apple is relying on that they are in desperate trouble.

Mapquest has a free turn by turn app. Been using it since iphone 3G. It works beautifully. Always wondered why Apple didn't just buy them or license from them.

Nope, they are not relying on that. They have a team working hard on the maps. And they also have millions of iOS users that would cause businesses to make sure they are on the new Apple maps just as much as they would push to be on Google maps. (An extension of your own argument.)

How many people do you genuinely think Apple will hire to get maps to a 2012 level?

No idea, but they still have current job listings up so they're still growing the team.

Indeed. I wasn't being critical when I asked. Or sarcastic. That being said - I don't think Apple is prepared to augment their mapping team to that which is comparable to Google's. And maybe they don't have to. Time will tell.

I do think they need to make significant progress (and soon) if they want to silence the "noise" about their maps. If it takes 6 months or a year - regardless of the reason - it's not going to be pretty.

I agree it probably will never be the size of Google's. With as much cash as they have on hand, they'd be better off augmenting their data from another provider. We'll see how it goes, but I have faith they'll respond to the pressure. This is a bit different from the Siri complaints.

So he caught cancer out of neglect??

Not over Android of course so that person you're replying to is way off base, but wasn't a big part of why his cancer took him out because he tried to ignore it for a while, then went the vegan route and finally started treatments too late ? I think that's covered in his biography.

That was of course way before the iPhone and Android thing.

----------

+1. They are mostly coming from people missing transit info.

There's way more than transit info problem. Why is it that some people feel the need to downplay the problems and do damage control for Apple I wonder...

Yeah, I was trying to remember that....but you got my main point. If it was due to neglect, it wasn't because of Android, it was because he was trying the wholistic approach first IIRC.

Probably because when it comes to actual day to day use for the average person, it's working. I haven't had issues. But I also stopped using it to look up local businesses long ago. I think, in my case at least, that would be the downfall if I was trying to use it to look up local businesses. I haven't found any map issues in my daily driving and such.

Ok...to be honest, I use Waze for most of my driving so I can't say I've put it through it's paces.

Apple makes little money off of software, even less with just navigation apps. It would make much more money off of features its customers really want that come integrated with the phone. Just look at Siri, It use to be a separate app sold by another developer.

It makes plenty of money of software in sales or in the app store. Yes its not that much compared to the overal profit but thats just ebcause apple makes so much profit.

How many people bought the iPhone just to get Apples version of Siri?
Not many? Siri up untill now is underused and for most a gimmick .

Have you not read up on any of the history between Apple and Google? Steve and Eric? There's emotion involved. And this decision could have easily been made before Jobs died.

But I do agree with the rest of your statement....but to think there couldn't possibly be any emotion is a bit naive if you ask me.

So you're telling me that the only map application you can use is the built in one? We're all gonna die from driving into a lake because Apple maps is jacked?

People are blowing this out of proportion. It's bad and needs to be fixed, but it's not the end of the world. There are solutions.

I agree that the Apple Maps situation is a real first world problem and hardly the end of the world. But this is a technology forum section for discussing iOS 6 and in that realm the Apple Maps situation is significant. What most people are upset about is a degradation of the user experience as Apple works out its issues with Google.
