I've used the Turn by Turn, and its great! I can see why Apple wanted it, especially since it's trying to have a hands AND eyes free interface as well you don't want to be held back. Also I haven't had a problem so far here in SoCal with any errors yet.

Still there seems to be a simple solution for all. Apple did not want to RELY on Google for something it wanted to do. But that is what the APP STORE IS ALL ABOUT! Its not millions of Apple only apps...so you can get any app you want if you don't like Apple Maps. Just like if you don't like Apple Notes, Clock, Weather, Calendar or whatever...THERE ARE OPTIONS PEOPLE!

So use Apple Maps or wait for Google Maps App and relax....or both...pretty simple...

Slowly we are entering a new era in tech...each company is saying to themselves, "I can do everything all by myself, it's my way or no way at all!"

The next few years will show if that's a good thing or a bad thing

Apple wants to get ahead of the game and they want their users to contribute to improve their map. However as a user we should get something in return for doing this favor to Apple. But what they did to us they pretty killed this feature on iPhone 4. Imagine a number of combined users including iPhone 4 and 3GS, that would have been a big help to improve their mapping service. Typical Apple bs giving a reason yet they neglected their other customers.

As it stands, the 30 pin adaptor is still thinner than the current iPhone 5. Plus, it offers the structural rigidity to withstand the phone's weight on a dock.

I understand some people can argue that dock stands is "a thing of the past". But, Apple did not offer a competitive replacement option otherwise enjoyed by many.
My self, for example, like to dock my phone in a charging holder while I drive. I'm not moving over to the iPhone 5 till I see a viable alternative solution.

Have you physically used the new connector? That thing is SOLID. Way more sturdy then the 30 pin connector.

It's a terrible thing. Someone somewhere, be it huge corporation or little guy with a computer in a shack, will eventually find a way to do what you do considerably better.

With the way things are, at least on iOS, we'll never be able to leverage a better product. Apple chooses the default app, and...well...you're stuck with it unless you go through the effort to jailbreak your device.

It doesn't take genius to see that this is exactly the case. It's what Microsoft continues to do to this very day with the Office for Mac suite. Leave out just enough features to make it substandard to the Windows version.

google could learn from microsofts bitter experience and apple´s 100% record in every new area of their business and see its a no win situation for them.

obviously microsoft has been embarrassed by the ever improving powerhouse that is iwork.

Or they could just use the standard micro USB but then they wouldn't have a proprietary cord to sell to people....at a premium price.

I like Apple products but they do one heck of a job nickel and diming people to death while creating the hype for people not to call them out on it. It's quite brilliant, actually.

I've been looking for a replacement app for days now, but haven't found one yet. A global mapping service on par with Google Maps, with a comprehensive POI database. If you know one, then please let us know. Of course all the other apps would still use Apple Maps, but I guess there is no a perfect solution anymore.

And before you suggest it, MapQuest is not available outside the USA.

What a waste. Instead of playing nice with google and giving your customers a great feature, We get an alpha version of a poorly developed maps app. Face it- apple does a lot of things well. So does google. It's a shame they are putting petty disputes before innovation and their customers.

LOLOLOLOLOL!!!

So you've used it "multiple times" over the last week and ONLY had 1 major problem and a bunch of minor ones?

Yep, great product there.

keep drinking the Flavor-Aid

Yup! I love the Apple Flavor-Aid. What's so hard to understand about that?

I played with a Samsung SIII the other day and did not get that tingly feeling I get with iOS.

How can anyone in their right mind love or even like Android?

Sure, Apple is not perfect and they make mistakes - however, they usually come to their senses and fix any major issues.

Remember the battery issues folks were complaining about with the 4S? Well, I had that problem too and it was corrected with an update fairly quickly.

How long do you have to wait on Google and/or your Carrier before you are even offered an update to the OS that came with your Android phone?

Exactly. Some Android phones don't even get updates...

Long live iOS!

For whatever the reason the lack of Turn-by-Turn Navigation functionality in IOS has ALWAYS been a major drawback.

I'm not sure if I believe this story 100%, I think apple always wanted to use siri as their turn by turn program so they had it planned to use their own maps all a long, heck why cant I get sprints free Nav on my iPhone, that would be sweet, but sadly its only free on android phones.

.... In Gruber's list, the smart move would've been #1 -- stay with Google Maps for another year while Apple cleans up their Maps as much as possible. No one is going to choose Android over an iPhone just because of turn-by-turn or vector graphics. If Apple truly had another year of Google Maps available to them, Tim Cook made a terrible choice.

This is difficult because (one way) to start cleaning up the map solution, is to get a better data set from crowd sourcing. The more users that use a mapping solution, the better it will get (Google has been collecting from various sources for years). If Apple stayed on another year, it'll make Google maps even better - and when that year is over, Apple is back to the beginning.

Just wait for Google Maps then as I said, this move was not one to shun Google forever, just that the standard map that comes with iOS is now Apple's Maps. Google WILL have an app, so it's just about waiting some time (which sucks I know).

Siri doesn't do turn by turn, Siri speaks it

You asked how can anyone like Android? Simple.. OPEN SOURCE! iOS can't do the customizations that Android can. The smallest of details can be altered on Android. iOS can't come close. Yes, Android takes a little work to get used to, but once you tweak it to your liking, it will hands down beat iOS. Android fixes major issues as well.

it would have been at the beginning but at the same time at least it wouldn't have all these problems.

It's tough to argue since I've just trial'd the maps around my house with no issues at all. I just hope all those complaining have a valid gripe. I could certainly put up with the pin for walgreens being in a lake while users of maps provide fixes to Apple for the things that aren't in the right place.

If I was having issues, there's no doubt that I'd be put off by the new Maps app, but I would certainly also have confidence and a little patience that the user corrections and updates would happen at a pretty good rate.

True, Google has been acquiring data for years and Apple doesn't have as much time. BUT, the companies Apple had acquired most certainly had been acquiring data for some amount of time and based on the number of devices accessing maps now compared to years ago, I don't have much doubt that Apple maps will take only a few months to be at a level "acceptable for travel". And that is really what we NEED, something that leads you the right way in a new place.

Smart move to do it in contract

Also seems SMART of Apple to do it with contract still in place. So Google HAS TO MAKE AN APP. I'm sure Apple saw this coming and knew that only way to settle their plans is for users to have Google Maps App as an option while they fix theirs.

So the contract most likely forces Google to make an app rather than fight back by doing nothing and staying away from iOS while Apple Maps is being fixed.
