I still don't understand why a display needs a powerful CPU. A Thunderbolt controller, sure. But it's connected to a computer that's perfectly capable of sending/receiving data directly to a bunch of dumb components. No middle man CPU needed.

I don't really have a need for a webcam or speakers either, but I accept that quite a few people do value having an all-in-one solution for FaceTime calls.

Most likely Apple will use the refresh as an opportunity to "adjust pricing" in the usual upward direction.

I probably don't need to go bigger, but now that there's an ASUS 6K at the same price point as the current Studio Display I'm seriously considering it. The slowest part of any computer system is the human sitting in front of it. Buying a new, faster Mac might save me a minute or two per day. Reducing the need to scroll, move windows around and switch workspaces could save me half an hour.

I dunno if anyone's said this already, but between the Woot! sale, Amazon's reporting low stock, and Apple has as late as March 5 for shipping on some configurations. Current stock might be nearly gone?

I'll buy one, probably. I almost bought one from Woot! but didn't want to have FOMO on a new one. The last one I had was great, but I sold it rather than moving it.

LG has already showcased a 5K mini LED (2304 zones) with 165Hz refresh rate at CES last month.
I think the new Studio Display will use the same panel.

I just hope it will have a HDMI port so I can plug my PS5 in to play and I don’t have to buy a separate monitor. But I guess Apple will just go all in TB5/USB-C.

So according to Gurman, Apple will be releasing an updated monitor that will vastly supersede its Pro (with many times more dimming zones and built in speakers and camera) monitor costing several thousand more? Well that’s Apple I guess. If it is 27? Not for me, if it still only has one input not for me either despite its design aspects and looks.

You mean it's barely a rumor given how certain we are of the details. But I guarantee you no one will call it an innovation, they didn't call the first one that. At least not here 🙂

Tim Cook has already called it ‘innovative’ lol. I believe he stated at the earnings call that Apple will be launching several brand new ‘innovative’ devices this year.

“Apple, and we're excited for all the opportunities we'll have in the year ahead to deliver innovations that have never been seen before and enrich the lives of users every step of the way,"

Hoping for Mini-LED and 120Hz. 600nits brightness is plenty for me since I use it in a light controlled environment and don’t like being blinded anyway.

Really hoping for 6K and 32”, though. Even if it costs more. But I suppose then it would be too similar to the XDR. It doesn’t need to be that bright though? And they could come out with a more advanced 8K XDR with 120Hz, and I’d be fine with this one being 60Hz for 6K and less bright for $1999.

Realistically, other companies are coming out with 5K displays now, and at better price points. I’ll probably pick one up during a holiday sale for $500 at the end of this year.

Nope. He did not name which products were innovative. So you are conjecturing its the monitor while stating it as fact. Could be new glasses, or the rumored new MacBook Pro, or the new home control unit... But doesnt really matter, many here at MR will say none of it is innovative. Unless it is, then they will complain it's too expensive, or they don't like the color, or it doesnt fit in with their work flow from 1990.

🙂

Upgraded Apple monitors are a good thing, their quality and appearance are usually a step above everyone else. That does mean a price premium, but the current prices are out of whack...there are several 6K 32" monitors available around the price point of the current Studio Display, and less than half of the XDR. The XDR price made sense as the only professional display at that level on the market, but not now.

I'm in the market for a monitor upgrade, my 30" Cinema display needs to be replaced. I'm waiting to see what Apple puts out before I jump, but right now I expect to get one of the 6K 32" monitors, they will have been out long enough that reviews of them should be pretty complete by the time Apple's monitors come out. I'm hoping Apple really puts something good forward, if they can't match what the rest of the market has going, even with a bit of Apple tax thrown in, then I'll be buying a non-Apple monitor for the first time in 20 years. That does speak to the quality of what Apple puts out, I'm not sure an Acer or LG would be that reliable for that long. I guess we'll see soon what Apple will do.
I agree. I have been meaning to get a new display as well and the current gen ASD would be cumbersome since I use a pc for work and thus would need to switch cables all the time (if the ASD even works with a pc) and for this steep price (try $2000 where I live) its not at all justifiable, however much I want it because of the build and image quality. Their relentless quest for exclusivity is sometimes at the cost of their own customers.

🙂

Nothing you have said is innovative. A laptop with an OLED screen isn’t, a folding phone with a titanium hinge isn’t, the last innovative things Apple made were its M class chips and iPad Pro tandem OLED screens. And Apple pricing always expensive no matter what.

Same boat. I also have two ACD 30" and they are close to die. The brightness over these last 20y are getting weaker and I have to applaud Apple for making such a great monitor last this long. I would love to replace with the XDR but those prices are just insane. If they cut it in half, I would buy two.
Yep, they really were great monitors at the time, and still are pretty good despite their age. 20 years of life in a monitor is nothing to sneeze at either, especially since that was still early in LCD monitor terms...my tube monitors before that weren't nearly as good and didn't last as long. That's really a reason I'd like to stick with Apple...yes, they were expensive, but they also lasted so the quality was great and made them worth it.

If the mods won't ban you for saying it, which ones?

The various models that are currently produced/owned/used are not under wraps (or awaiting Teh Reveal); I appreciate the sensitivity of your attentiveness to staying OT 🙂

There's a thread around here which lists the 6K monitors...see https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/the-complete-list-of-6k-32-monitors.2459226/ for the discussion. It's a starting point, reviews and specs are out there online for the released ones (at least the ones that have been out for a while).

I've been daily-driving my aluminium/glass 6K Kùycon for approx. 6mo 🙂

Who are you arguing with? You said Tim Cook called the ASD II innovative, I said he didn’t in the quote you furnished. Please try to be accurate. As for your opinion on what’s innovative… given your track record on accuracy I chose not to engage. Not that it matters, I don’t buy on innovation I buy if a device fits my needs. Well, except for the APV that was mostly curiosity.

Ok fair enough he didn’t state ‘exactly’ which devices he was referring to when he said ‘innovative’. But it doesn’t help the discussion when he makes hype sales speech like that. And track record on accuracy? What an odd thing to say, I have an opinions I am not a paid analyst, just like yourself I’m sure. You and have no ‘track record’.

I await to see what it ends up being anyway, for now I am leaving my options open on monitors but am collecting a few to choose from. I need 32” or more though and am not going to be paying XDR Pro prices for it.

i have 3 asd on my desk and can't believe I waited so long since buying the first one. It really improved my productivity. Only hope it is NOT OLED or significantly better mini-LED since i miss the deep black levels on my iPhone 17 and even Macbook Pro 14 m3. I am shocked how well the M3 Max handles 3 external 5k monitors.

Yeah, but which specific ones?

He is a CEO of a world recognized tech giant company, what do you expect him to say? Incremental updates, subscriptions, mode new games added.

He has to draw-up interest no matter what to keep customers and shareholders happy. Business as usual.
