Gotta say, the Studio Display lineup is a letdown for me as well... A third-party 32-inch 6K or 27-inch 5K from another brand would probably give you a lot more bang for your buck at this point

And they should allow Apple TV to run macOS.

But this is Apple and they dictate the user experience. They're not going to let anyone "PC" their stuff.
What's the point? You have a Mac connected to it anyway that runs ATV. If you want ATV on a screen, get a much cheaper Smart TV with ATV included. No need for this resolution to watch ATV.

I'm just laughing at the photos Apple is using on their website. I wanna know what company outside of Cupertino is spending thousands of dollars on 27" monitors to look over some generic office documents. I hope they opted for that nano option with those windows.

HR: "Sorry Cindy, we can't give you a raise do to your monitor expensive budget."

The real point here is, Apple is showing the back of the Display because it is aluminium while the front of the XDR is plastic cheap looking.

While it might be more capable than a 27" iMac, it still can do less.

Was willing to pay 2k for a regular 32" Studio Display. Now buying nothing. Guess I'm not the target audience of Apple.

This kind of statements are off any reality. You're comparing a computer with a display because of the electronics they're made of? How could a 32" Studio Display realistically come to 2k if the 27" is already 1599?

Interesting. Think the normal A19 should be more than enough for either displays. Both are very powerful chips. On a separate note, would like to see a 27" iMac.

This would make a decent base level iMac...
Could the macOS (that runs on the neo) ever be hacked to run on it?
I'd quite like a screen that can do very basic tasks (a bit like a modern TV with TV, browsing, streaming apps etc) without needing to be paired to a laptop, but which can also pair to a laptop when needed for extra productivity.

I really don't understand why a monitor need such powerful chips or to be honest need a firmware update?
i have a Asus monitor, never needed a firmware update, i doubt it even has firmware that can be updated.

So much software and firmware in devices that don't need it, even my keyboard can be updated.

i remember the days when a printer did not need to be updated, it did what it did, a mouse was a mouse and a keyboard was a normal keyboard.

I have so many questions why a monitor needs an A19 Pro. Local dimming zone speed in conjunction with a high refresh rate? There are a lot of 4k 240hz+ monitors and i will bet they don't have anywhere near the processing power of an A19 Pro.
Try not to overthink it. These are left over, cheap, binned chips worth just a couple bucks to Apple. They would have been tossed out otherwise.

Most of the cores are turned off. so it's not really an A19 or A19 Pro.

We're still stuck using 60hz in a brand new monitor in 2026. Absolutely pathetic in this price point. Been spoiled with MacOS on multiple devices at 120hz+ for over several years and can't go back to slow ass screens.
They quite literally released a 120Hz screen...If you're spoiled and can only use that now, get it! It litearlly exists in 2026!

Or if you think the XDR is too expensive you could just get a cheap 120Hz gaming monitor. They've existed for years. Just know that you get exactly what you pay for. And you're going to realize very quickly when you look at the display why that 27" 4K 120 HZ ended up costing you thousands less. It'll be like looking at today's iPhone next to an iPhone 1. It'll be super jarring, but to each their own!

Save that money!

I don't get this thinking... How is it a waste? The entire chip is most likely maxed out with driving 14.8M pixels (vs 3M on the iPhone), the 2000+ dimming zones, and VRR
isn't that what the computer you're plugging in is for ?

Mostly likely they are using A19 as it will still be manufactured/stockpiled long enough into the 5-10 year cycle of these monitors.

Monitor? sure, I guess. But every webcam I've ever owned has had firmware updates and a few speakers I've owned as well.

I think it's more funny how a nano-texture coating alone costs nearly as much as the Neo.
To be fair people typically grossly continuously underestimate and undermine the costs of screen technology—audio/video tech in general.

Quality A/V equipment/upgrades often costs much more than budget and mid-tier computers. That’s not specific to Apple.

Modern Quality/Ideal Prosumer monitors from any manufacturer cost more than budget, mid-tier, and legacy high-end computers all the time.

Zero desire to upgrade from my current Studio Displays. Kinda relieved Apple is so underwhelming these days.
That’s definitely not the case with the XDR Studio Display finally having a 27” display from them that can work with image parity of their Macbooks and other Apple devices.

Hopefully the Ultra XDR rollout begins soon beyond the iPad Pro

Asus monitors absolutely have firmware updates important to keep up with for their prosumer and gaming monitors.

I own several Asus ProArt and ROG monitors behind my Pro Display XDR.

They offer substantial updates for stuff like HDR/image performance

I think you misread that comment. He said he wishes the Apple TV could run macOS, not that the Studio Display could run tvOS. And I honestly would agree, there’s a lot of instances that I have to get raspberry Pi’s for something specific but I would much prefer if I could just get an Apple TV box and run macOS off of it instead. Sure I can get a Mac mini, and I have, but those are more expensive and much larger.

Well tvOS is macOS in a different flavor for - well - tv.

Well yeah for sure, that is its consumer use. I’m talking about outside instances, like for business if I have a display that needs to run a specific code in a web browser 24/7, I just get a Raspberry Pi and install Linux on it etc. But it would be amazing to just get an Apple TV and use that, which would give me the ability to remote into it from anywhere on the network from any Mac without any special software, amongst many other advantages. Obviously they would need to bring back the USB C port for that to be possible but I’m just talking in hypothetical. Basically having a tiny box that could run macOS for super cheap would really disrupt the Pi market and I would prefer it over Linux for multiple reasons.
