Interestingly (or not!), I was looking to buy a new Dell Studio 15" laptop earlier today. Going back later this afternoon I have now been told there is a 4 week lead time - coincidence or have a load of non OS-X Mac users decided to go elsewhere?

Here are the numbers for last quarter:

thanks for posting that up, hadn't seen that table before

While today's updated Macs won't have the "ew, it's Windows Vista!" affect, I think some bad moves may cost them sales. A lot of negative chatter about the new Macs.

The negative chatter is a backlash to all the speculation and rumors that Apple was going to release a $899 laptop and possibly drop the prices on all the models. So it's only negative if you bought into all the "hype". If you've been around and followed Apple long enough, then you should already know this usually happens before and after Apple product announcements.

Its been said, that if Apple and MS switched places, we'd hate Apple a hell of a lot more than we hate MS now.

That's not necessarily true. Microsoft has shown time and time again, that it is willing to abuse it's monopoly; forced hardware manufacturers into only offering Windows based computers, forced businesses into ridiculous, anti-competitive licensing, extended open standards to the point they were no longer platform agnostic, forced competing products out of business by tying their own products to Windows, etc.

Also, Apple could never have the same share of the market that Microsoft enjoys, unless, of course, Apple decides to release a white box version of OS X, which will never happen.

Once again, Apple accounts for nearly half (49%) of the year-over-year unit growth in the PC industry overall. Another way to look at it, the Windows PC unit growth was only 2.6% compared to Apple's 29.4% during the period. I think this tells the story so much more accurately than market share or rank.

Thanks for posting this, as I noticed the same thing and was about to post the numbers myself.

...Plus, the overall PC rate is growing faster rate. Not much good news today, sorry. :(

Sorry billy, but as per the provided numbers say the exact opposite of what you're claiming. Unless you have another data source (not provided) and since you posted after IJ, it looks like its time for the "Show the Math" exercise.

So here's the math, showing all work (just like is required in 5th Grade):

2Q, 2007
Industry total: 16,583 (M units)
Mac portion of total: 1,271

Subtracting out the Macs from the total: 16,583 - 1,271 = 15,312
Thus, the "PC" industry (eg, everyone except Apple) sold 15,312M units in 2Q07.

2Q, 2008
Industry total: 17,350 (M units)
Mac portion of total: 1,645

Subtracting out the Macs from the total: 17,350 - 1,645 = 15,705
Thus, the "PC" industry (eg, everyone except Apple) sold 15,705M units in 2Q08.

2Q08 - 2Q07 Growth of "PC" industry (excluding Apple):
2007: 15,312M (from above)
2008: 15,705M (from above)

Percentage Change: (15,705-15,312)/15,312 = .026 = 2.6% growth.

FWIW, if you choose to also eliminate Acer's poor performance (-21%) from the Industry totals, the numbers aren't quite so severe for the non-Mac's:

2Q08 - 2Q07 Growth of "PC" industry (excluding Apple, Acer):
2007: 15,312M - 1,680M = 13,632M
2008: 15,705M - 1,331M = 14,374M

Percentage Change: (14,374-13,632)/13,632 = .054 = 5.4% growth.

WINDOWS IS ONLY MAINTAINED BY IGNORANCE AND INERTIA. The day the Mac gets 25% market share, Windows and Microsoft will be history in three years!
I don't think you understand tha... wait, what's the point?!
