Once again, Apple accounts for nearly half (49%) of the year-over-year unit growth in the PC industry overall. Another way to look at it, the Windows PC unit growth was only 2.6% compared to Apple's 29.4% during the period. I think this tells the story so much more accurately than market share or rank.
Thanks for posting this, as I noticed the same thing and was about to post the numbers myself.
...Plus, the overall PC rate is growing faster rate. Not much good news today, sorry.
Sorry billy, but as per the provided numbers say the exact opposite of what you're claiming. Unless you have another data source (not provided) and since you posted after IJ, it looks like its time for the "Show the Math" exercise.
So here's the math, showing all work (just like is required in 5th Grade):
2Q, 2007
Industry total: 16,583 (M units)
Mac portion of total: 1,271
Subtracting out the Macs from the total: 16,583 - 1,271 = 15,312
Thus, the "PC" industry (eg, everyone except Apple) sold 15,312M units in 2Q07.
2Q, 2008
Industry total: 17,350 (M units)
Mac portion of total: 1,645
Subtracting out the Macs from the total: 17,350 - 1,645 = 15,705
Thus, the "PC" industry (eg, everyone except Apple) sold 15,705M units in 2Q08.
2Q08 - 2Q07 Growth of "PC" industry (excluding Apple):
2007: 15,312M (from above)
2008: 15,705M (from above)
Percentage Change: (15,705-15,312)/15,312 = .026 = 2.6% growth.
FWIW, if you choose to also eliminate Acer's poor performance (-21%) from the Industry totals, the numbers aren't quite so severe for the non-Mac's:
2Q08 - 2Q07 Growth of "PC" industry (excluding Apple, Acer):
2007: 15,312M - 1,680M = 13,632M
2008: 15,705M - 1,331M = 14,374M
Percentage Change: (14,374-13,632)/13,632 = .054 = 5.4% growth.
