The question is, prior rumors had this machine using Apple's processor and not Intel's.

I also think 12", like the 11" is just too small but that's just me.

i wonder what the actual screen size/resolution will be? Maybe they will shrink the bezel and make the actual screen size the same as the current 13" MBA??

4K, 1080P, 720P resolutions would make sense in the MBA as they are industry standards. Heck, the new 5K iMac makes sense for working with editing 4K video, pictures, etc.

So, what would be the point of retina in a MBA?

I want MBA 12 Retina

Dear St Claus

Please give me a 16 GB 1 GB SSD MBA 12 with Retina display that has about same footprint as MBA 11. It does not need to be super thin or super light.

And please give me 8 hours battery time at 50% brightness so I can run Keynote in a workshop for a whole day.

And please give me new release of old iWork package. Yes I know this is OT:)

I would like to have this in February (I know I can forget that but I still want it then).

JUST DO IT!!!
Stefan

I’d love an Apple macbook running OS X that I can remove the keyboard from (or twist under) and it becomes an iOS iPad. Surface done right.

I think Apple is moving in that direction. The only question is do we have to wait until next year or 2016 for that to happen.

How exactly is Apple moving "in that direction"? Everything Apple has said and done recently indicates they don't believe in hybrids, and they will be keeping touch/iOS and keyboard/MacOS devices distinctly separate.

I agree they are not, nor have they given any indication other than iOS and OS X slowly becoming similar. However if iPad sales keep falling I believe they will take another look. The iPad as a luxury item is fine, as a device it is getting squeezed on both sides.

I personally hope the combo device happens. I'm not expecting it, just wishing it. I'd love to do my work on a Macbook Air, either as a portable or connected to a second large screen, when it is important to have multiple windows and quick jumps between. However, when it comes time for reading (web, twitter, rss, books, PDFs, etc etc) or playing games I can just use the screen as an iPad. The Microsoft idea is solid, just needs the Apple refinement.

Of course the combo solution would require shared drive space, and apps would have to be very compatible. For example the OS X and iOS versions of iWorks. There are technical challenges but they are no longer huge. Its more tuning of each OS for file passing and compatibility.

I don't think so.. If anything, judging from Microsoft "success" with Surface and Windows 8 - it proves that Apple's strategy of not mixing the "touch" and "traditional" OSs/devices is a solid one.

Hybrid tablet/laptop device sounds nice in theory.. In practice though - the user experience is crap on both fronts. Use Windows 8.x OS for an extended period of time, and you will see what I mean. It's a schizophrenic OS that's neither here nor there.

Windows 8.x has been dismal failure on the market exactly because it's trying to be everything to all use cases, but it gets none of it right.

Yes we agree. Thats why I suggested when its attached to a keyboard it is running OS X, when it isn't its running iOS.

Well back to the land of reality. The iPhone 6 to me has really shown Apple has upped its game when it comes to materials. The Glass and Metal feels of a much higher quality than any Apple product before it. Lot of it may have to do with the quality of the curves, and how the glass blends into the metal. Really hoping this quality hits the Air.

I'm also hoping the storage sizes are bumped up. I still haven't come up with a good solution trying to manage Media and Files with a 128 GB drive. I wish the Time Capsule worked as a much smarter file repo.

It needs Retina. Apple has no reason to launch a product in 2015 that comes without it. I think the MacBook Air is the only new product that doesn't have that option available. Hopefully the rumors were true and this finally changes, because after using iDevices and the 5K iMac, it's a little rough to work on the MBA, despite it being a fantastic device.

I like the idea of a 12" screen, because the 13" might have just been a little bit too big for the portability, but it's a totally moot point unless the screen resolution is bumped up along with the quality of the screen.

I should've said moving secretly in that direction while giving out misinformation to avoid tipping off their competitors and making their fans nervous about any big changes ahead. :D

What I wish they would do:

12" MacBook. Cheap Surface pro competitor. (Touchscreen tablet, retina, maybe Broadwell M or Apple variant, beefier iOS or streamlined OSX or maybe both, detachable keyboard, optional stylus for the masses/artists.)

12" Retina MacBook Air. (Upped SSD and RAM por favor, would eventually be fazed out when the MacBook runs OSX and has the same usability.)
14" MBP. Just keep doing what they're doing, but make it more of a pro machine instead of the opposite.
17" MBP. Would make many people happy.

How about keep the current thinness, give it a better display, smaller bezel and just work on making it more powerful within its current size. No one is really going to miss it being smaller if they keep it as is.

Sure care a LOT more about a better screen then being as thin as paper.

What's USB? It's all AirDrop and Cloud (box, dropbox, iCloud drive) ... :D

A little bit ago I would have said it is still good for large files, however with dropbox, homegroup for local files I can make do with just micro sd cards for backups.

USB can still be handy.

Apple's 12-inch MacBook Air and the Apple Watch are expected to enter mass production in 2015 as the company's supply partners have accelerated component production for both products, reports Digitimes. Supply chain sources note that the 12-inch MacBook Air will feature Intel's Broadwell processors and a new ultra-thin design. The new notebook is also expected to be available in limited supply when it launches due to yield issues with components, and will be primarily manufactured by Quanta Computer.

This information about the 12-inch MacBook Air provided by Digitimes lines up with previous reports, as Apple was rumored to be developing a new form factor complete with a buttonless trackpad and a fan-less cooling system for the laptop. Intel launched its new ultra low power Broadwell Core M processors this past November, which will likely power the 12-inch MacBook Air.

Aside from an ultra-slim design and a new processor, Apple will also look to offer the 12-inch MacBook Air in Silver, Gold, and Space Gray options when it launches in mid-2015.

For ****'s sake, it's the iPad Pro. Why else would the rumors for both the iPad Pro and this new 12" MacBook Air be coinciding. Also, why would Apple go with a substantially weaker processor for the MacBook Air line than they have been using?

Ha ha. You might be right. A rumor for a 12 inch product that is really thin. Could easily be the big ipad.

The current gen MacBook Air is already thin enough.

And 640K of memory is all you need.

----------

Was 11" too small and 13" too big for some people?

You've got that the wrong way about. 11" is too large and the 13" is too small for some people. Your statement doesn't make any sense since the other model is the solution in each case.

----------

I won't be happy until I get a full function computer no thicker than a piece of paper that I can roll up and carry in my jacket pocket.

You can have that now: all you need is a brain and a piece of paper and pen.

I agree with those who have said the 11 and 13" variants will probably disappear in favor of a single 12" model. 12" really seems to be the sweet spot where it is still big enough to get real work done while still being small enough to feel really portable. Given that the existing 11" model is almost exactly the footprint of the Surface Pro 3, 12" in that same size if not a bit smaller should be no sweat when they have so much bezel to work with.

I think a 12" is a certainty when they can make the 12" with nearly the same footprint as the 11" (read: they probably can right now)

Also a retina 13" MBA conflicts with the 13" MBP since there would be so little product differentiation. It also lets Apple poorly spec the next 13" MBP without it being constrained by the overlapping spec of a 13" MBA.

I honestly don't like the MBA design of being one side is thin and the other side is thicker.. When the computer is open, I always have the feeling like it will fall behind because the center of mass is so close to the screen. And the pressure is not equal (duh!) everywhere..

I mean make it thinner but make it equally thick everywhere just like any other MBPr. I'm sure they will have the same volume inside if they make it this way.. Plus the current MBA is still only as thin as it's thickest side.. Therefore marketing-wise, current design has no benefit..

And (of course) please make the bezel thin, at least thinner.. I just wanna see a screen, not black bands around..

Exactly. Anyone who says there's no such thing as "too thin" is wrong.
