It would not surprise me if Apple used this event to drop the 16GB floor, and offer 32GB as the base model storage. They've done it before.
Yeah, once, a few months into the original iPhone when they clearly had not much of a handle how much and at what storage size the iPhone would sell.

Damm it Apple why so many dumb decisions lately? Just call it mini an put 2GB of RAM on it

Suckers Edition?
I kid.. It's going to be a revolutionary product.

bigger numbers can fool the uninitiated as to which product is better. That's why Microsoft named their second console the "Xbox 360" to launch against the "PlayStation 3".

It's also why uneducated consumers may think the "Galaxy s8" is better than the "iPhone 7s"

Ceteris paribus, will the 4" iPhone gain or lose battery life with the new A9 vs the old A7?

I know Apple always aim to lower power consumption in their products but the 6-series phones have room for larger batteries to make up for a more power hungry chip, so maybe it´s not a top priority any more?

Any one who knows if Apple made any real progress in power consumption between A7 and A9?

I like the iPhone 'Classic'. But, I don't really care about the name...Just release it already!

Seeing that my 5s is nearing 3 years old tech, I'm ready for a new phone in that size format. Really don't care about the 3d touch or whatever. Going from an A7 processor to A9 will be fine for me.

is this a precedent to have the following iPhone naming standards? I hope not

iphone se early-2016
iphone plus late-2016
iphone late-2016

Apple did lose a significant market share when it dropped the 5S size and form - may be Jobs had a point!

Six iPhones at home, only one 6S - the person with very large hands has it. As the oldest one, I prefer a larger screen - but 4" or 6" - the difference is minimal as one ages.

Huh? What, they actually gained market share when the Iphone 6 was released, while Samsung got their ass kicked. This is total revisionist tripe.

What's that .... Apple drops a 5-iver ...:D

always in the market for a name dropper, (or in this case a number-dropper).

A few more "SE" names come to mind.

simply excellent
speedy enhanced

Anything that'll start the ball rolling on getting rid of those stupid numbers after the iPhones and iPads.

Considering iPhone is on an annual cycle, it needs not to have the early/late separation. iPhone 2016 sounds alright to me.

If you bought a 5S at launch, then your battery is shot by now. This is why I'll upgrade to whatever it is they launch in the 4" form factor, and I suspect I'm not alone. And I'm happy enough with the return of the 4" option that I'm fine with it.

Nope. I bought a 5S on launch day, use it heavily every day, and the battery is still giving just as good of performance as ever. If there is not an iPhone 7 with a 4" screen this year, then this 5S at least will carry on for another year.

March 15th not far away! Release at stores March 18th! Fix It will take it apart on the same date! Cannot wait till Anandtech finish it's testing which be quite soon probably in mid to late June!

I really really hope they are ditching the iPhone 5SE name entirely...
I don't like a phone launched in 2016 with an A9 to be related to an almost 3 years old model (even if a truly amazing model like the iPhone 5S was).

A mini, and pro line for iPhone would be a more ideal naming scheme. It helps fit with the iPad lineup.
Basically:
iPhone Mini (4 inch model)
iPhone (Number +/- S model, 4.7 inch model)
iPhone Pro (Replaces the Plus name for the 5.5 inch model)
Agree.
I'd like it.

Apple didn't lose any market share since then, they actually gain more, but I agree there's still people wanting a 4" device.

It's quite cheap to have your battery serviced by Apple. A depleting battery isn't a good reason to get rid of a still fantastic phone...
An A9, 2 Gb of RAM and Apple Pay are much better reasons

How can they "drop" something from a name that never even existed?? Apple was NEVER going to call it the "5SE" - that was a silly fantasy of bloggers and macrumors and others with no real knowledge of Apple plans, or even common sense. Never in a million years would they release a new phone halfway through the 6s lifecycle and put "5" in the name. Unbelievable.

As far as a price point the "same as" the 5c, I hope not. PLEASE let it be priced the same as the 6s!! A premium 4" is what I want, not old and busted tech.
Correct.
Only on forums like this totally baseless rumors suddenly become the truth....

What could SE stand for ? Special Edition? In any case much better then 5 SE. I thought thats a horrible name.

The rendering does not look as beautiful as my iPhone 5 with those great phases at the edge. I understand its not an render from Apple. Just wanted to say I hope it will be as good looking as my current iPhone 5.

Somewhat Excellent?

March 15th or it the 22nd? Now I wonder if Apple knows about this at all? LOL!

A9 uses much less power then the A7! it smaller and thinner.
