Personally I find Apple's website to be just fine - it works, which is all it's supposed to.

But for such a tech giant, could the website be even 'more'? And how?

It's a treasure trove of information. I am guessing you only see the 'shopfront', but if you look around, particularly at the links at the very bottom of the page, you'll see a wealth of information and resources.
