been out for awhile...

my mom works in the school system and we've had AppleWorks for Windows for awhile now. However, we still use macs more than 95% of the time

Nothing even close to new...

For those of us who were students in a Mac & PC environment, we remember that AppleWorks, or ClarisWorks as it was called back then, has been around for Windows as early as version 3.5. The best for translation was version 5.

AppleWorks needs some bumping up...

I'm a huge supporter of all apple products... well, almost all... I can't say the same for AppleWorks. It really lacks features. The spreadsheet program can't handle formulas properly, No PowerPoint-like program, non-aquafied user interface etc. I bought a copy of MS Office for school, because it was the only choice - I'm sorry, but AppleWorks just dosen't do the job at the moment. Nor does staroffice for PC... M$ Office is the only program out there that can do the whole thing. Apple needs to get in there and really hurt M$s stranglehold. I hope someone from apple sees this and understands that appleworks is due for a tune-up, not steve's gulfstream...

Hmmm

Apple could silently do a Linux- version as well, though maybe there's no point in competing with StarOffice.

I LOVE AppleWorks!

I've been using AppleWorks since version 3, (really, it was ClarisWorks then, but who's counting?). In all this time, I have rarely found myself wanting features that AppleWorks didn't have. For the average user, AppleWorks has more than enough features. Sure, it doesn't do spell check while you type, but what kind of world do we live in when we can't run a spell check manually. The thing about having a Windows version of AppleWorks is that -- unlike ANY version of Office -- it is ACTUALLY THE SAME PROGRAM ON BOTH PLATFORMS! This is such a simple concept, yet so revolutionary. And, if you want to run it on more than one platform, licensing for AppleWorks costs you around $200 at least whereas Office costs closer to $800 (I think thats about right). And with Office, you're looking at forking out mad cash probably just to neglect 3/4 of the features.

To respond to a previous post, AppleWorks 6 DOES have an Aqua interface, and it DOES have a presentation module.

The only thing that will get me to stop using AppleWorks is if/when the StarOffice/OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org) shows up on OS X in a usable form. StarOffice is also cool because, as an application running on multiple platforms, it is -- again -- the same program, with basically the same feature set.

serious...

if the answer to my questions are positive, i promise that i will kick out 20 ms office licenses of the greek company i am working for.

are documents compatible (word/excel/powerpoint)?
is there an integrated (greek) spell checker?
how much must companies pay for one license?
is it possible to deliver outside the u.s. (greece)?

you can even help, if you could tell me where to get more information.
thanks!
