Asking what you do for a living is a good conversation starter and I don't take offense at all..

Asking how much one makes is way more offensive.

Appropriate or Nosy: What Do You Do For a Living?

No, no, not at all...Fred Garvin. Male prostitute.

It's not really nosy, but I have to admit that I feel quite concious about those sorts of questions nowadays.

Mainly because I have no idea how to reply, my life doesn't really have a set direction right now. Do I say that I'm considering going back into university? That I work part time in a department store? That I'm working on short stories that I can adapt for some creative use (I feel awkward just typing that last one...). So I suppose to simplify things I'll just say one thing that seems appropriate and then try and move away from the topic quickly and politely.

I think asking my credit score is more nosy. ;)
I don't know though, I am not incredibly bothered when people ask what I do. When I give the answer I am vague about it, with good reason though.

I solve problems.

I'm usually rather annoyed, but it is mainly because it is often a disingenuous question. Once I explain what I do, I see people's eyes glaze over: they actually don't give a crap.
