Tracking isn't limited to social media apps. Many other apps use(d) tracking. Check your privacy settings for apps that have permission to use your microphone. How is it with no social media apps installed on my phone that I get ads 30 minutes later for something I had a verbal conversation about? There is something fishy going on. Multiple calls to apple have given no answers to my state of frustration. I even made a joke about needing dog food. Next up we’re add for dog supplies. Guess what. Don’t have a dog.
Exactly. Did users expect something different? That's because of the stupid ambiguous language Apple chose: Ask App Not to Track? Seriously, Apple?
When you "ask" something, it gives the other person a chance to deny your ask. But when your "order" or "demand" something, there's no either or.
Apple, change the language to ALLOW and DENY and tweak permissions accordingly.
This! Just like precise location vs approximate. Ridiculous. Like said, shouldn’t be allowed to demand all tracking allowed in order to use their app.I'm having a problem right now with the game Word Crossy in that it wouldn't let me continue unless I allowed tracking. So they show a link for their opt out notice which I asked for and they are asking question after question but not sending it. They even asked for my device number which I refused. Apple needs to start making it mandatory to be able to opt out or get off the platform.
Even without the apps installed they still have the SDKs in every app that collects the same data to build shadow profiles. Only way to stop it is a tool like NextDNS.io or at home a pihole/AdGuard home. How is it with no social media apps installed on my phone that I get ads 30 minutes later for something I had a verbal conversation about? Outrageous. I hope smart people at Apple will sort this out. We can't continue with all those manipulating apps.
Apple should throw down the hammer and tell every developer that if they try to sneak around this, their app will be permanently removed from the app store. End of story.
So we're blaming Apple for app developers deliberately trying to bypass the new rules and permission screens, by finding alternative methods?! Give me a break - With that straw man argument you can blame every single person for every other persons actions.Waiting for the daily "Thats why I trust Apple my privacy blah blah".
I suspect the reason Apple still defaults Google is due to the user experience. Currently their is no other search engine company who has been able to provide a better user experience.Apple's whole privacy stance has always been nonsense.
If Apple really cared about privacy, they'd stop accepting money from Google and switch the default search engine in Safari to DuckDuckGo.
(I think Brave might use DDG by default... are there any other browsers that do that?)
Apple's insistence on charging devs $99/year and taking a 30% cut is why tracking is so pervasive now. There's a ton of free software on Windows, macOS, and Linux with absolutely no strings or tracking attached. Because those apps can be developed and distributed for free.
Since Apple demands to be paid despite the fact that they bring nothing to the table, developers have to find an easy way to get the money. They turn to this tracking that Apple pretends to despise so much. (If Apple really has an issue with it, Apple's issue is that developers are opting to use a third party ad network instead of charging users directly for the app, where Apple would be able to take a 30% cut, vs advertising where Apple doesn't get a cut beyond the $99/year dev fees they charge, which disproportionately are shouldered by smaller devs.)
I understand your concern but this could be coincidental. Or the ads you saw on the pages that you visited could be tied to an ad network that your bank also uses for advertising. Even though DuckDuckGo isn’t tracking or selling your data, once you click a link from the search results you are going to a site that has its own ad policies.I’ve been in the market for a new car for a few months now. Only searching on my iPhone and iPad with DDG in Safari. I don’t use social media (unless you count Reddit and if so, I never made any posts about it).
A few weeks ago, I was in my bank app and it said I’ve been pre-approved for a car loan. My bank has never offered any car loan pre-approvals before. There is definitely some level of tracking going on.
Yes I blame Apple if they are turning a blind eye to it without enforcing their rules. So we're blaming Apple for app developers deliberately trying to bypass the new rules and permission screens, by finding alternative methods?! List of things Apple “brings to the table”:Since Apple demands to be paid despite the fact that they bring nothing to the table
